Hi Pete,
Why can't I find a mattress that lasts longer than a few years? We've been through 3 mattresses in the last 10 years. The mattress we had before that was more than 10 years old. The only reason we replaced it was because of its age. Otherwise, it was still in good shape. We aren't light people, but we aren't overly heavy either. I weigh 215 lbs and my wife weighs 175. What's the problem? Are good quality mattresses not being made anymore? Thanks for any help you can provide. Vince Hi Vince, Over the last 10 years, memory foam has taken over as the primary upholstery material. All of the name brands have been sold to investors, who's focus changed to enhancing profits. Memory foam is what they use to sell more mattresses more frequently to the same people. Memory foam has created a boon for the mattress industry and a nightmare for the consumer. Almost all mattresses made today are upholstered with memory foam for the sake of profits. Memory foam is, without question, the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. The key to a successful, long term purchase is to buy a mattress with no memory foam in it. And while those are hard to find in stores, we specialize in mattresses that have no memory foam. The mattress I recommend for people your sizes is the Natura of Canada Greenspring. Of their four models, the Ultra Plush is the most comfortable without being too soft. My wife and I have been sleeping on the Ultra Plush model for the last 8+ years. And despite each of us weighing more than 200 lbs., our mattress is still in like new condition. Every time we went shopping for a mattress, the salesperson always talked highly about memory foam. It never occurred to me that the memory foam was the problem. Why is this? Vince Hi Vince, Why?! Memory foam is their 'cash cow'. That's why! Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive, as well as pressure sensitive. Only memory foam softens as it warms from the body heat you give off. This is especially problematic for heavier people, who tend to emit more body heat than slender people. Combine the extra body heat with the extra body weight and you have a recipe for disaster. But even slender people aren't safe from the toxic chemical off gassing associated with memory foam. Memory foam is made from a chemical soup. Several of the 61 different chemicals used to make memory foam are highly toxic. Memory foam's toxic chemical off gassing negatively affects every living being in your home. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress, that I recommended to you, has NO Memory Foam. The primary upholstery is Natural, Hypoallergenic Talalay Latex. The secondary upholstery is plant based poly foam. This mattress has NO Chemical Off Gassing to worry about.
