I’m shopping for a Stearns and Foster Mattress. I had one many years ago. It was a great bed. I want one like it again. I read your blog post where you recommended a S&F Blisswood in Plush. That sounds good. Do you still recommend that one? Do you remove my o,d mattress? Karen Hi Karen, That would have been a very old blog post. We’ve been blogging about mattresses for 22 years. S&F had been considered “The Cadillac of the Industry” for many decades. We had been a Sealy / S&F dealer until Tempur-Pedic bought them in 2013. Since then, they’re all upholstered with memory foam. I’m 80 years old. I’m looking for a top quality mattress that’ll give me firm support with a plush top. I won’t be able to handle it myself and I don’t have anyone to help me. So, I’ll need white glove service where the mattress is brought upstairs, into my bedroom, setup on my platform bed and my old mattress removed and taken away. I’m returning a Simmons Beautyrest mattress after both my wife and I got sick from it. She developed a bad cough and I broke out with skin rashes, vertigo and had a bad chemical taste in my mouth. Thanks, Mike Hi Mike, The memory foam used by Simmons, and all of the other name brands since having been sold, is made of 61 different chemicals. Some of them are highly toxic…formaldehyde and benzene are only 2 of the toxic chemicals used. People react differently to the chemical off gassing, with sinus headaches being the most common. Your reaction and bleeding sinuses are among the more severe reactions that have been reported to me. Avoiding any mattress upholstered with memory foam is the key to avoiding these negative reactions. Even plant based memory foam, which won’t cause these problems, creates the problem of premature wear. Your best choices are mattresses upholstered with pure, organic latex. Latex is superior to memory foam in every way, including being more comfortable and lasting much longer, besides providing you with a chemical free solution. What mattresses would you recommend for a short term beach rental property? We are replacing 2 queen mattresses and 4 twin mattresses. The two queen mattresses are Simmons Beautyrest Westbury which have been comfortable and held up well over the years but the time has come to replace all mattresses with an equivalent mattress. Your input will be appreciated. Thank you, Julie Good Morning Julie, Equivalent isn’t possible, as Simmons was sold in 2016. All Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are now upholstered with memory foam. Memory foam is specifically designed to wear much more quickly. It’s a temperature sensitive material that reacts to your body’s heat. It sleeps hot, allows your body to sink into the mattress and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. It’s a horrible product…the worst thing ever invented by this industry. All of the name brands have been sold since 2013. All are using memory foam and are far lower in quality than they had been. Your mattresses were upholstered with polyurethane foam, primarily. Almost no mattresses are using poly foam today, as it was inexpensive and lasted a long time. What made a Beautyrest mattress unique at the time you bought those, was the individually pocketed coils that provide firm but contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of your body and spine. That coil system was so popular, that it’s now available from almost every mattress manufacturer. I have a lumbar ruptured disc pressing on a root nerve as well as multiple minor vertebral issues related to normal aging. My pain management doctor three times said pllowtop when I asked what type of mattress to get. So when I read your information it appears you discourage these type mattresses. Can you advise me? My husband and I are elderly and in need of a new mattress. We’re not in terribly bad shape, just the usual aches and pains.
