“Most of your weight is at one end of the mattress.” “Sleeping partners are often different weights.” These are the main reasons why your mattress will wear unevenly and become uncomfortable much too quickly, if you do not rotate/flip your mattress on a regular basis from the time it’s new. One sided mattresses are rotated. Two sided mattresses are flipped. All of this is nothing new. This procedure has always been the industry standard. Once a month for the first year, once every three months thereafter. Special notes: Two sided mattresses should be flipped, side to side and head to foot on a rotating bases for maximum results. King size mattresses often develop a “hump up the middle”. Since most people sleep farther apart on a king size mattress, the center remains like new while each begins to wear. The hump up the middle is, “the nature of the beast“. Adding to the problem is the foundation, which is usually reinforced up the center of the bed. There is a solution that will reduce the effects. This trick only works with a standard king size mattress. A standard king is almost square…close enough that it works. Rotate your king size mattress 1/4 turn. Hi Pete, I'm writing in hopes that you can help me and my husband find a mattress. He has upper back pain that is aggregated by sleeping on our current, failed Sleep Number bed. He is 6'2.5" and 198 lbs. He is 40 years old and prefers to sleep on his side. We are wondering if we need to try a memory foam mattress. But after chalking up $400 in shipping for the failed sleep number I'm hesitant to buy another ridiculously expensive designer/gimmick bed. What are your thoughts?! Buying a memory foam mattress will only take you from bad to worse. Contrary to all the ads and hype that you've been following, thus far, memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented. Is there anything near a second best or what would you say is the best available today. We have a Simmons Beautyrest in that room now, the one that they claim you can drop a bowling ball on and not spill a glass of water, LOL. That was not why we bought it, but we did not expect the comfort level to drop as fast as it has. A sag developed. That old S&F mattress was made at a time when manufacturers competed with one another to make a quality product. Those days no longer exists for the name brands...and haven't for quite some time. Your old S&F mattress was one of the last great mattresses made by "The Cadillac of the Industry". Today, S&F is nothing more than expensive junk. S&F is not alone in this. All of the name brands have been sold...Sealy and S&F were purchased by Tempurpedic in 1013. Simmons and Serta were bought by an investment group in 2016. All have loaded their mattresses with memory foam. Memory foam is used for the express purpose of causing a mattress to need frequent replacing. Despite all the hype to the contrary, memory foam is thee worst upholstery material ever invented. Besides being a lousy product in terms of performance, it's also a health hazard...off gassing the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made. (Adding injury to insult). Your mistake is in assuming that a new S&F mattress would be as good as your old one. We used to be a Sealy/S&F retailer...exclusively. We dropped both lines when Tempurpedic bought them and turned them into junk mattresses. We spent a good amount of time and effort at the industry trade shows, looking for high quality alternatives. Over the years, we home tested a number of different mattresses...with varying results. The one we have now, we like very much. It's 9.5 years old, now, and still like new....with each of us in the 200+ lb. range. I have lots of disc related back problems and my wife commonly suffers with hip pain. Hi Pete, I think want a mattress with no pillowtop that I can flip. Then again, I am 70 years old, live alone. I realized, after reading about your Wolf Tulah Mattress that maybe I should explore that as a more viable option so I don’t hurt my back trying to flip a mattress. The next important thing is that I live in Florida now and I have never turned my heat on since I moved here. I do not want to sleep on some cocoon like material that makes whatever side I am sleeping on sweaty. I like firm mattresses, especially when laying on my back. I can actually realign my spine and adjust myself if the surface I am lying on is firm enough. But I am a side sleeper so maybe I need something slightly less than firm. I often feel like my head is lower than the rest of my body on a lot of mattresses and I end up punching my pillow into a ball and stick it against my shoulder and under my neck in order to feel aligned when sleeping on my side. And on most beds, including mine, it always feels better to sleep across the mattress or even with my head at the foot of the bed. Any ideas as to what material, firmness, and/or brand would suit me best?
