Hi Jonathan,
A mattress topper will help with the pressure points, which is why you’re tossing. The firm mattress was a good choice for support, but you also need a measure of surface comfort. A soft mattress topper will provide that without sacrificing the underlying firm support. Given your size and age, one of the Magniflex Mattress Toppers will do a nice job. I have decided to take your advice and order the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress. https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ But before I do, I had a couple more questions for you. My husband and I are both side and back sleepers, and I am on the curvy side. Do you think we would need a latex topper to soften the feel of the firmness of the mattress? Also, do these mattresses still need to be flipped every now and then? Thank you, Jennifer Hi Jennifer, You’ll rotate that mattress, not flip it. Regular rotation will give you more even wear, as the years go by, resulting in greater longevity. https://www.themattressexpert.com/blog/mattress-care-maintenance#/ That particular mattress is comfortable for most people in any sleeping position. I recommend waiting about a week after you receive it, to determine if you need a topper to soften it further. It takes about a week or so for a new mattress to loosen up a bit. It’s a little stiff, at first. It also takes about the same time for your body to get used to its new home. (So to speak). An additional mattress topper may or may not be necessary. So, it makes more sense to wait. Thank you for your blog. I happened upon it last night and did a lot of reading. Thanks to the information you have shared, I now know what went wrong. I'm a young fellow, reasonably fit and without any physical damage to address. Like so many, I fell for all the sales hype about memory foam mattresses, and bought into it. As you have noted, it felt great to try at the store. It provided me with a great night's sleep for the first couple of months. It lasted just long enough to get me past the 60 day trial period. Now, I'm stuck. Just as you have said, I sink too far into it. My back hurts and my arms and legs are going numb. I had dismissed the headaches, not realizing that the memory foam off gassing was causing them. So, what I want is an all foam mattress that feels great for many years. I've looked at the all latex mattresses that you often recommend. I've considered flipping this mattress and adding a latex topper, another of your recommendations, but just want to get rid of this chemical laden memory foam mattress altogether. I need your help. What mattress can you recommend to me that gives me what I want, has NO Memory Foam in it. Thanks, Bill Hi Bill, Latex does everything that memory foam is advertised to do, without any of the negative side effects and providing a great night's sleep for many years....not just months. Your memory foam mattress isn't made of all memory foam. Depending on the model, it's a couple/few inches of memory foam atop several inches of high density polyurethane foam...which is why flipping it and adding a latex topper works so well. But, as you have said, the chemical off gassing will still be there. The Natura of Canada All Latex Mattresses will give you what you want. https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ These mattresses DO NOT Off Gas. I've been searching for a mattress that will last longer than all these horrible reviews I keep reading. I've had my current Cal King mattress. a Serta Perfect Sleeper, Artistry Collection for over 20 yrs. Yes, it's still awesome and I'm still sleeping on it and of course they do not make them anymore. I'm about to move into my new house, so I'm ready to say goodbye and replace it. I've been looking at Stearns and Foster and after doing reviews on numerous websites and the BBB I learned a few things: 1. Weight restrictions on beds. Some beds only hold the weight of 500 lbs., so if you and your partner's combined weight exceed this don't buy certain mattresses. 2. Make sure the frame for the bed will hold you and your partner and the weight of the mattress and box springs. 3. Make sure if you do not purchase a box spring that you pay attention to the frame the mattress will sit on. The spacing in the planks will also cause the mattress to sag in time. With this being said, I was told by numerous people in the mattress industry, as well as reviews, that Stearns and Foster mattresses sag in the middle because they weren't made with enough support in that area. Tragic, most people eventually migrate to the center of the mattress during the night. So, moving on from them. It just seems every mattress I look at the reviews always state how the bed sags within the first 2-3 yrs. of owning it. I've tried three mattresses at this store in Huntsville, AL. Of course, there is no literature online about them and the company's salespeople do not know anything about them, except for the fact that they were made exclusively for that store. So, I can't even read reviews on them. I am looking for a pillow top mattress over 14" high, med/firm Thanks, Tiffany Hi Tiffany, The only thing that’s true, about the information you have so far, is that most mattresses aren’t made nearly as well as they had been. Your notion as to why is completely wrong. What most of today’s mattresses have in them that your 20 year old Serta doesn’t have in it, is memory foam upholstery. All of the mattresses that you’ve asked me about are upholstered with memory foam. All of the name brand mattresses that you could once trust to make a quality product have been sold. Sealy and Stearns & Foster were purchased by Tempurpedic. The investment group that bought Serta also bought Simmons. Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. Not only is it a poor quality product, memory foam also off gasses the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made…creating a health hazard. And, a mattress with a pillowtop will show wear faster than one without. What you say you want won’t work for you for very long. Since your mattress is "Still Awesome" I recommend that you take it with you when you move. DO NOT BUY A NEW MATTRESS! I'm interested in solving a mattress problem. We recently bought a fairly expensive mattress. We tested it on a box spring in the store, but the bed frame that we purchased with our house is a platform style (no prior experience with this style). We like the look of it so we gave away the box spring. For the first couple of months, things were ok. But now, my girlfriend and I are starting to experience stiffness and back pain in the middle of the night and early mornings when we had absolutely no issues prior. These issues seem to clear up once we get moving over the course of the day, so I have to believe it's related to the mattress or the platform bed. I was wondering what you would suggest as a solution for us to try. The bed feels fine when we initially lie down on it, but obviously, overnight something isn't agreeing with us. Thank you, Dan Hi Dan, Today's boxsprings are cheaply made and made to be rigid. A platform bed provides similar support. That's not the problem. Most of today's mattresses are upholstered with memory foam. My guess is that you have one that is. Your problem is with the memory foam in your mattress. Memory foam is a horrible product...specifically designed to cause the mattress to need frequent replacing. For most of what is made today, equating expense with quality is a huge mistake. The truly diabolical part of memory foam is, that when you get off of the mattress, it looks perfectly fine because the memory foam returns to its original shape. The point being, that prevailing in a warranty claim is highly unlikely. Memory foam has created a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer. There is a fix to this problem. Flip your one-sided mattress over and add a soft latex topper to that. This will put the memory foam at the bottom. The underside will provide firm support and the latex will give you the surface comfort you need to sleep well. Ideally, it would be best to get rid of that mattress and start over with a mattress that has no memory foam. If going with "the fix", here is a link to the latex topper you'll need. The Suite Sleep 2" or 3" Soft Organic Latex Mattress Topper is all you'll need to transform your mattress into a sleep system that you will look forward to every night.. Does the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress require the matching foundation shown with it, or can it be used on a platform bed? https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ Thanks, Michelle Hi Michelle, A platform bed is fine, as long as it has all the proper supports…a center beam that supports the cross slats and legs to the floor supporting that center beam. There are poorly made platform beds out there, so you have to be careful. With this type of allergic reaction, you should avoid buying a mattress with latex in it. The most common allergy is topical. For this type of allergy, latex mattresses are NOT a problem. Not only is latex foam, hypoallergenic, your skin never comes in direct contact with the latex. The mattresses, toppers, and pillows have a covering. Unlike other latex products, like gloves and bandages, the latex foam in mattresses is hypoallergenic…having gone through a 5-stage washing that removes 90% of the protein, (the allergen in latex), that is naturally found in the sap from the rubber tree. Some people have a severe allergic reaction to the other two major foams, poly, and memory foams. Unfortunately, the negative reactions to the toxic chemicals used to make memory foam, are far more common. There are now, plant-based poly and memory foams available, but not widely used. Latex foam is also available with no allergens, made synthetically, using the SAPSA process...also hard to find. The mattresses we carry, which are all latex or a latex hybrid, are among the highest-quality mattresses on the market. Those who do not have your particular problem can benefit greatly by using a mattress, mattress topper, or pillow made of/with high-quality latex...All Hypoallergenic.
