I recently purchased a mattress set. The first one I purchased was the Simmons Beautyrest Pillowtop. It felt good, at first, but began  sinking in the middle, very badly, within a couple of weeks. So I used my one-time exchange and selected the Stearns and Foster Luxury Firm tight top. It felt wonderful in the store. The bed was delivered Saturday, and it is so hard that my back is killing me.
What do I do now?

A new mattress should always feel firmer than the store’s floor sample. Your problem has an easy and reasonably inexpensive fix. 
You can rest easy knowing that you have good support.
You’ll rest easier, giving that mattress the surface comfort you want.

Hi Karen,
The memory foam in your mattress is what’s causing your problem.
Memory foam is the source of most people’s mattress problems.
It’s a poor quality product that allows you to sink, where you’re hitting the firm polyurethane foam that supports it.
I suggest flipping your mattress so that the memory foam is on the bottom where it can do you no harm. Add a 3” soft pure latex topper to make it comfortable.
Latex creates the feeling that you’re floating and won’t allow you to sink.
This is the least expensive way to correct your problem.

If you’d rather get a new mattress, I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium. This mattress uses a stronger version of the pocketed coils found in Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. But, it’s already upholstered with soft, pure latex and contains no memory foam.

I hope you can help me, as I am having a very difficult time trying to find a mattress that will work for me. I have an adjustable bed for medical reasons. I cannot use a memory foam mattress due to having asthma.
The chemicals is memory foam make that condition worse.

Welcome back.

A mattress for the two of you presents a couple of challenges.
1. The difference in weight between the two of you.
2. A mattress that’s soft enough for side sleepers that’s also strong enough to last a long time under 300 lbs.

1. For the average couple, with about a 50 lb. difference, rotating a mattress once a month for the first year and once every 3 months thereafter is sufficient.
For your weight difference, rotate your new mattress every month.
The better you stick to this regiment, the more evenly your mattress will wear.

2. There is no mattress that will do both jobs.
One that is soft enough at the surface will wear much too quickly.
For the sake of your financial health, your best buy is a mattress that’s strong enough to hold up well under 300 lbs. and a soft latex topper that you can replace as it becomes necessary without having to buy a new mattress.

We do carry a mattress that’s well made enough to support that kind of weight on a long term basis. My wife and I have had the ultra plush version for more than 10 years. And despite that we each weigh more than 200 lbs., it’s still in great condition. I recommend the Luxury Firm version of that same mattress.

What you’ve gleaned from reading my blog is correct.
To be more specific, an individually pocketed coiled mattress that upholstered with high quality latex may be all you need.
The additional purchase of a latex topper may not be necessary.

I SURE hope you can help me!
In the last 7 years, I have BOUGHT 4 mattresses!! 
I have degenerative disc disease affecting the mid part of my back to about the top of my hips. MOST mornings my back is so stiff that it takes me about 2 or 3 hours to quit hurting! I have tried a Tempurapedic, HATED it. 
A very high end S&F pillow top with memory foam, HATED it.
Right now, it’s a Sleep Number Bed.
NONE of these have kept me from suffering and stiffening up! 
I am so sick of sleeping on the couch when I have spent TONS of money on mattresses! I know the recommended 'thing' is a firm mattress and I just cant sleep on a hard surface. I, very much, prefer a 'cloud' to sleep on . 
I am at my wits end about this!!! PLEASE HELP! 
I have not had a good nights sleep in several years!!! 
Needless to say I am now terrified to spend a lot of money on yet ANOTHER mattress and I am all for any 'scratch and dents' you might have at a big discount! I do, however , have to have a KING size.

First off, you have to know where you you’ve been going wrong, over the past several years…making the same mistakes over and over again.
All of the mattresses you’ve purchased have been upholstered with memory foam. Despite all the sales hype to the contrary, memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented.
It’s the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive.
As it warms from the body heat you give off, it softens, allowing the heavier parts of your body to sink further than the lighter parts.
This throws off your body’s natural alignment…causing all sorts of pain.


Secondly, you’ll be happy to know that you don’t have to buy a second hand mattress to get a great price for what you need and want.
