Hi Pete,
My husband is 6'2', 210 lbs. I'm 5'5', 150 lbs. He needs a firmer mattress than I do, and we've spent thousands of dollars and lots of sleepless nights in the last 10 years, buying mattress after mattress that we can't use. We thought investing in the Select Comfort system would be the answer...he would have it very firm, I could go softer. Nope. It still has the body impression problems, and my husband is in great back pain. We have also tried Kingsdown, a local mattress dealer's in-house brand...what should we try next? Thanks, Ann Hi Ann, Kingsdown, is a limited distribution company…which is why it seemed like your retailer’s in-house brand. They are available nationwide, but only through one retailer in each marketplace. Everybody needs some degree of firm support and some degree of surface comfort. You can achieve a happy balance for both of you with a mattress on the firmer side and a latex topper to soften the surface. My recommendation comes in two parts. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm, and a Latex for Less 2”Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper. The mattress uses an individually pocketed coil system which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. The latex topper provides additional surface comfort that creates the feeling that you’re floating. He’ll enjoy that, as well. We have a 5 year old Sealy (Plush Pillowtop) mattress that has always been too hot, and is now causing pain in the lower back. The mattress still looks to be in good condition, with no obvious indentations to look at it. But it feels like I’m sinking into it. Options seem to be; try a latex topper, or return mattress to Sealy for refurbishment, or replace it. Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Brian Hi Brian, Sending a mattress back to the manufacturer to be refurbished is not an option. That hasn’t been an option for several decades. If going with a latex topper, you’ll find that works better if you first flip the mattress over before adding it. The flip side provides a firmer base support for your back and the topper provides the comfort. If going with this option, I recommend Latex for Less as your best value….shown here: Natural Latex Mattress Topper latexforless.com Today’s mattresses that are upholstered with memory foam, as yours is, are designed to last only a few years. Your best option is a replacement…a mattress upholstered with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex…and NOT memory foam. Latex has been the best upholstery material for the last 100+ years. I have been looking at your blog for the past month or so. Both my husband and I weigh about 220 pounds and have been through multiple mattresses in the past ten years. We did purchase a firm latex bed a few years ago and it was very hard. We ended up exchanging it for a pillowtop plush latex, which ended up with ruts after about a year and a half. If only we had known to put a latex topper on the firm bed! Right now we are sleeping on an inexpensive memory foam bed that was comfortable for me for about two months. I don't sleep well on it. What I get from your blog is that we need a firm bed with a latex topper. I have several questions: · What bed do you recommend for us? · We live in the pacific northwest. If we have a bed delivered and it doesn't work for us, are we once again stuck with a bed we hate? · How do you know what thickness of latex topper is right? Thanks for your help, Joan Hi Joan, Start with a mattress using an individually pocketed coil system for proper spinal alignment and Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm is my recommendation for you. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Add to that, a Latex for Less 3” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper to maximize surface comfort. Click on each of these links. What type and model of mattress do you recommend for a guest room where each person will have a different preference? I have no idea what would constitute a bed that the majority of people would find comfortable given all the variation. I’m looking for the best value. Something of quality, but not expensive. Thank you, Beth Hi Beth, Most people sleep better on a medium feeling mattress. If you start with a mattress that is on the firmer side of medium...like this Eco-Terra Hybrid Medium Firm Mattress...shown here: Hybrid Latex Mattress | Eco Terra Mattress ecoterrabeds.com Then add a 2” Soft Organic Latex Topper from Latex for Less to soften the surface…shown here: Natural Latex Mattress Topper latexforless.com The topper can be easily removed and put back on to satisfy a variety of comfort preferences for your guests. Neither item is expensive, but both will last for many years to come. Thanks, Pete - TME Delivery is Always Free Online Ordering is Easy & Secure. I am looking to replace an old Sealy Reflexion Newport Beach Latex Mattress for its current equivalent model. This mattress of medium firmness. I am looking for queen size. Thanks, Anthony Hi Anthony, There’s no equivalent available. Sealy was sold to Tempur-Pedic after that mattress was made. Your mattress used synthetic latex with a layer of polyurethane foam on top. And while that same exact mattress is not available, a better option is. You can get a Pure, Organic Latex Mattress from Latex for Less. These mattresses are available in your choice of comfort and thickness. Click on this link to view those mattresses and place your order. Can you recommend a quality "entry-level" latex mattress. I know latex is expensive and quality costs, but I'm looking to spend under 2k for a queen size mattress with low-profile boxspring and basic frame. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mark Hi Mark, Latex for Less has a high quality 9” Pure, Organic Latex Mattress that comes in your choice of firmness. The Magniflex KD Foundation is available in 5” low profile and upholstered in your choice of 3 colors. Get it with legs and you won’t need a frame. A friend has a Stearns and Foster latex mattress, they’ve had for many years. I was able to try it out. It was super comfy. I’d like to get a mattress like that in king size. Do you have this mattress? Thanks, Jack Hello Jack, S&F hasn’t made a latex mattress since 2014, after having been purchased by Tempurpedic. Our highest quality Latex Mattresses are made by Suite Sleep. The Portfolio Model is the most comfortable. First, thank you for your blog. It has certainly helped make some sense out of all of the disinformation out there. Second, my wife and I are looking to buy our first new mattress and could use your guidance. We need a queen bed and are comfortable spending something in the $1500 to $2000 range. We are both relatively young, so no special considerations or specific problems, but we would like a decent amount of support balanced with a bit of softness. You've convinced me to stay away from the pillowtops and all foam. I'm currently thinking that a firm tight top and a topper would be the way to go. What would you recommend that would fit the bill? Thanks again, Austin Hi Austin, There are best buys at various price points. At yours, the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress @ $1599 is your best buy, providing excellent firm, contouring support that maintains proper spinal alignment and greatly reduces motion transfer. A Latex for Less 2" Organic Latex Topper runs only $259. Together, they’ll provide you many years of supportive, comfortable sleep. We recommend using a waterproof mattress protector. Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will add to the longevity. Rotate your new mattress once a month for the first year and once every 3 months thereafter to ensure even wear, which enhances the comfort life of any mattress. I weigh 230 lbs. What kind of mattress do I need that does not get indentations in 2 yrs. Thanks, Anton Hi Anton, A mattress developing body impressions is the nature of the beast. The upholstery that provides the surface comfort is pressure sensitive. The more weight applied, the deeper the impression. Besides body weight, there’s the quality of the upholstery to consider. The softer and less resistant the upholstery, the deeper the impression. To minimize the body impression and the frequency of having to replace a mattress, think in terms of a sleep system, rather than just a mattress. Start with a mattress that uses pure, organic latex. Latex has always been the most resilient upholstery material. But at your weight, add a removable latex topper to your new mattress. The topper will absorb much of your body weight, which preserves the mattress. Over time, you’ll replace only the topper, as needed, and not the mattress. By doing this, your new mattress will last for many years. The mattress I’m recommending is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss.
