Hi Pete,
3 years ago, we bought a Simmons Beautyrest Black king mattress. The mattress is sagging in two places. After speaking with the dealer and submitting the required documentation and photos, I received a return e-mail stating that the impressions fall within normal parameters. The store won’t exchange it and we can’t live with it. We sink so far that both of us are experiencing back pain. Do I have any recourse? Thanks, Sam Hi Sam, The problem with your mattress is common with all mattresses that are upholstered with memory foam, which allows you to sink much too deeply, but recovers when you get out of bed. Memory foam is purposefully designed to do what you’re experiencing… creating a situation where you’re forced to buy a new mattress every few years, rather than the 10-20 years prior to the introduction of memory foam. Not being able to prevail in a warranty claim has created a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer. You have 2 options. Buy a new mattress. The widespread use of common memory foam is the reason why today's mattresses need such frequent replacing. All of the 'Name Brands' have been sold to investors, so that profit is their main focus...as opposed to quality. Memory foam wears quickly, sleeps hot, and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made.... …chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene are only a couple of the several toxic chemicals. 61 different chemicals are used in the manufacture of memory foam. Common memory foam is purposefully made to be highly deceptive...feeling pretty good in the showroom, and remaining so for the length of the comfort guarantee. But it only takes a few/several months, (depending on your body weight), before you realize you've made a mistake. Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive. As memory foam warms from the heat your body gives off, it softens...allowing you to sink into it. At first, it feels pretty good. But memory foam isn't very resilient. So, it doesn't take very long before it softens too much and you're sinking into it mush too far. This sinking is what throws off your spine's natural alignment, which then becomes painful. The truly diabolical part of all of this, is when you get out of bed, the memory foam returns to its original shape....or close enough to it as to rarely meet the criteria of a 1.5" sustained impression needed to prevail in a warranty claim. So, when you've had enough back pain and sleepless nights, you have to buy a new mattress. Most people never realize that it's the memory foam causing all of the problems. Why would they? Afterall, millions of dollars are spent on advertising, selling you on what a great product it is. And, when you shop at your local store, the salespeople are telling you the same thing. I remember when memory foam was first introduced...about 25 years ago, when only Tempur-Pedic was using it,...when you could only buy one on QVC or The Home Shopping Network. I remember seeing the ads for Tempur-Pedic where they pressed a hand into the foam...took the hand away, and the hand print remained in the foam. This is not good, just from an engineering standpoint, in terms of durability. I remember thinking, way back then, "Who, in their right mind, would think that's a good idea?". (While I am not an engineer, I was raised by a man who had 2 engineering degrees.) Well, the following decades showed me the true power of advertising...especially when you spend millions of dollars on pervasive, mass media advertising...shedding a great light on the old adage, "Tell a lie often enough and long enough, it becomes the truth". In fact, it's only perceived as the truth. A lie never becomes the truth. And a mattress upholstered with memory foam will never be a good, supportive, long-lasting mattress. The memory foam mattresses I've purchased sleep hot. Even the gel memory foam, which they say sleeps cool, doesn't. Not all night, at any rate. They're not hot for the first few hours, then get really hot. What's up with that?! Do you know of a memory foam mattress that actually does sleep cool? I happened upon it last night and did a lot of reading. Thanks to the information you have shared, I now know what went wrong. I'm a young fellow, reasonably fit and without any physical damage to address. Like so many, I fell for all the sales hype about memory foam mattresses, and bought into it. As you have noted, it felt great to try at the store. It provided me with a great night's sleep for the first couple of months. It lasted just long enough to get me past the 60 day trial period. Now, I'm stuck. Just as you have said, I sink too far into it. My back hurts and my arms and legs are going numb. I had dismissed the headaches, not realizing that the memory foam off gassing was causing them. So, what I want is an all foam mattress that feels great for many years. I've looked at the all latex mattresses that you often recommend. I've considered flipping this mattress and adding a latex topper, another of your recommendations, but just want to get rid of this chemical laden memory foam mattress altogether. I need your help. What mattress can you recommend to me that gives me what I want, has NO Memory Foam in it. I've been looking at Stearns and Foster and after doing reviews on numerous websites and the BBB I learned a few things: 1. Weight restrictions on beds. Some beds only hold the weight of 500 lbs., so if you and your partner's combined weight exceed this don't buy certain mattresses. 2. Make sure the frame for the bed will hold you and your partner and the weight of the mattress and box springs. 3. Make sure if you do not purchase a box spring that you pay attention to the frame the mattress will sit on. The spacing in the planks will also cause the mattress to sag in time. With this being said, I was told by numerous people in the mattress industry, as well as reviews, that Stearns and Foster mattresses sag in the middle because they weren't made with enough support in that area. Tragic, most people eventually migrate to the center of the mattress during the night. So, moving on from them. It just seems every mattress I look at the reviews always state how the bed sags within the first 2-3 yrs. of owning it. I've tried three mattresses at this store in Huntsville, AL. Of course, there is no literature online about them and the company's salespeople do not know anything about them, except for the fact that they were made exclusively for that store. So, I can't even read reviews on them. Your notion as to why is completely wrong. What most of today’s mattresses have in them that your 20 year old Serta doesn’t have in it, is memory foam upholstery. All of the mattresses that you’ve asked me about are upholstered with memory foam. All of the name brand mattresses that you could once trust to make a quality product have been sold. Sealy and Stearns & Foster were purchased by Tempurpedic. The investment group that bought Serta also bought Simmons. Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. Not only is it a poor quality product, memory foam also off gasses the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made…creating a health hazard. And, a mattress with a pillowtop will show wear faster than one without. What you say you want won’t work for you for very long. Since your mattress is "Still Awesome" I recommend that you take it with you when you move. DO NOT BUY A NEW MATTRESS!
