Hi Pete,
I’m returning a Simmons Beautyrest mattress after both my wife and I got sick from it. She developed a bad cough and I broke out with skin rashes, vertigo and had a bad chemical taste in my mouth. What caused all that?! What mattress can I buy that won’t do that? Thanks, Mike Hi Mike, The memory foam used by Simmons, and all of the other name brands since having been sold, is made of 61 different chemicals. Some of them are highly toxic…formaldehyde and benzene are only 2 of the toxic chemicals used. People react differently to the chemical off gassing, with sinus headaches being the most common. Your reaction and bleeding sinuses are among the more severe reactions that have been reported to me. Avoiding any mattress upholstered with memory foam is the key to avoiding these negative reactions. Even plant based memory foam, which won’t cause these problems, creates the problem of premature wear. Your best choices are mattresses upholstered with pure, organic latex. Latex is superior to memory foam in every way, including being more comfortable and lasting much longer, besides providing you with a chemical free solution. We need, yet another, new mattress. We’ve been through several over the past several years. It wasn’t until I found your blog before realizing that it was the memory foam, all along, that’s been the problem with all of my previous mattresses. To listen to the salesperson we’ve been dealing with, you’d think that memory foam was the latest, greatest thing. It’s all been a lie to sell mattresses. Anyway, we want a latex hybrid mattress with pocketed coils. After reading your blog posts, you’ve convinced me that’s what we need. And while I trust what you’re saying, I can’t bring myself to buy any mattress without the ability to send it back if we don’t like it, after all we’ve been through. Memory foam is specifically designed to do that, along with sleeping hot, off gassing the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made, and the sinking in that causes back pain to get worse. We sell no mattresses that use memory foam, for all of those reasons. All of our mattresses are upholstered with Latex foam, (none from China). Latex is and has been the highest quality upholstery material for more than a century….Natural and Hypoallergenic. Our recommendations are, to some degree, based on body weight. I see many people write for mattress advice. I am 4’11 and weigh 150. I have DDD, (degenerative disc disease), in my lower back. I sleep on side and stomach, mostly. I slept on a Beautyrest mattress at a hotel and my pain was gone after only two days. My pain returned after being home, so I went out and bought a Simmons Beautyrest mattress. Of course, it was very comfortable at first, but after time my back pain worsened. I do not use it anymore. It made me sleep hot. I’m sleeping on the couch for now. What is your recommendation? Regards, Regina Hi Regina, The hotel Beautyrest mattress may have been older. Since Simmons was sold, the new owners have switched to memory foam. Memory foam allows the heavier parts of your body to sink, which throws off your spine’s alignment, worsening your back pain. Being a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat, is what allows you to sink and sleep hot by reflecting your body’s heat back to you. It’s nothing less than a horrible product, purposefully designed to cause a mattress to wear faster. What that hotel Beautyrest had that relieved your back pain, was the individually pocketed coil system, that’s designed to provide firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine….minus the memory foam. I ordered a queen size Sealy mattress from you, back in 2013. A few years ago, I got married and my husband insisted on buying a king size Sleep Number Bed. I'm in my mid-70's, have had two knee replacements, a reverse shoulder replacement and am about to have surgery for a torn gluteus medius tendon in my hip. Plus I have low-back pain. I'm a side sleeper and have an adjustable extra-long twin bed. I ache all the time. My bed is too firm and lying on my side, pressure points, like the trochanter muscle, hurt. I just realized my current mattress is OLD - a Simmons we bought in 2006! My brother recently bought a Sealy Posturepedic Highpoint Plush mattress and he loves it. Says he no longer has aches and pains. I think this is a hybrid? Coils and some foam? I can't imagine buying a mattress without first trying it out to compare. We’ve been sleeping on a Sealy Reflexion Venice Beach Latex Mattress for the past 19 years. We flipped it about 8 yrs ago. This mattress was incredibly comfortable for most of that time! Now, not so much, as we and it have gotten older. We’re looking for suggestions on a replacement. We are back and side sleepers and like firm support over mush. That one is quite comfy. My wife is allergic to wool! I see wool in many new foam mattresses. I do not like memory foam, outside of a car seat, if that helps to know. I change positions quite a bit, at night. My wife sleeps more a rock. We are 70. I do have a recurring back issue, my wife has a knee issue, but otherwise, we are in ok shape. I sleep on back or side but side sleeping needs torso support for my back. I hate soft mattresses. We are 5’8 at 160 and 5’3 at 130. We are looking at dual adjustable bed bases. I like a head propped and she likes to elevate her legs. PS: I do not want to need a step stool to get in and out of bed. Richard Hi Richard, At your ages, an all foam mattress is almost always a mistake. Worn discs, which you likely have, require the upward, pushback support of an innerspring mattress. No all foam mattress provides that…not even latex, which is the best of all the foams. An individually pocketed coil mattress with latex upholstery is your best option. It is important the the latex be high quality, for the sake of longevity. I mention this because many manufacturers are using latex that’s processed in China, where they use clay as a filler. It’s sold as all natural latex due to clay being a natural material. But, it isn’t pure latex. And it wears rather quickly. These beds are sold as if there were a great degree of therapeutic value. There therapeutic value is, actually, minimal. Elevation of the head helps with breathing issues. Elevating the legs can be achieved with a pillow. If you spend a lot of time in your bedroom, watching tv, reading or working on a laptop, then there’s a pretty good reason for spending the money. My husband and I have been looking for a new mattress. We have had our current mattress for 13 years! It's a very big and important purchase and we just want to know what would be best for us. We’ve tried out several from Serta, Sealy, Ashley and Tempur-Pedic. We prefer the comfort and look of the S&F mattresses, but do not know if they are worth the price. We have read a lot of bad reviews. We just want to know that if we are going to spend $2000+ on a mattress, it needs to be the right choice. What would you recommend? Simmons and Serta were purchased by an investment company. Quality is no longer job #1. Today, it’s all about profit. The memory foam they all use is purposefully designed to turn mattresses into a disposable item, needing frequent replacing. To add insult to injury, memory foam sleeps hot and off gases the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. In short, you’ll be disappointed with any mattress made by any of those bands….hence, all of those bad reviews. We’ve sold all of those bands prior to them being sold.
