Hi Pete,
I SURE hope you can help me! In the last 7 years, I have BOUGHT 4 mattresses!! I have degenerative disc disease affecting the mid part of my back to about the top of my hips. MOST mornings my back is so stiff that it takes me about 2 or 3 hours to quit hurting! I have tried a Tempurapedic, HATED it. A very high end S&F pillow top with memory foam, HATED it. Right now, it’s a Sleep Number Bed. NONE of these have kept me from suffering and stiffening up! I am so sick of sleeping on the couch when I have spent TONS of money on mattresses! I know the recommended 'thing' is a firm mattress and I just cant sleep on a hard surface. I, very much, prefer a 'cloud' to sleep on . I am at my wits end about this!!! PLEASE HELP! I have not had a good nights sleep in several years!!! Needless to say I am now terrified to spend a lot of money on yet ANOTHER mattress and I am all for any 'scratch and dents' you might have at a big discount! I do, however , have to have a KING size. I appreciate you, Doris Hi Doris, First off, you have to know where you you’ve been going wrong, over the past several years…making the same mistakes over and over again. All of the mattresses you’ve purchased have been upholstered with memory foam. Despite all the sales hype to the contrary, memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive. As it warms from the body heat you give off, it softens, allowing the heavier parts of your body to sink further than the lighter parts. This throws off your body’s natural alignment…causing all sorts of pain. Secondly, you’ll be happy to know that you don’t have to buy a second hand mattress to get a great price for what you need and want. A mattress using an individually pocketed coil system for proper support that maintains the natural alignment of your body and spine, that’s upholstered with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex foam, is what you need to sleep well and wake refreshed for many years to come. My recommendation comes in 2 parts. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium for lightweight to a little above average weight…Medium Firm for heavier weight. Shown Here: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 And while this mattress is comfortable, to achieve that cloud like feel, add a Latex for Less 3” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper. Shown Here: Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper | Latex For Less These products are surprisingly affordable. The mattress is On Sale, and comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. ******* You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height and color. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well. Hi Pete,
I want to find a good mattress for relieving fibromyalgia pain. I bought a Sleep Number after the salesperson told me it would be good for relieving my fibromyalgia pain. Was I misled! What a joke that was! WORST BED EVER!!!! After reading some of your blog posts, I believe you can help me. I look forward to your recommendation! Thanks, Ursula Hi Ursula, Unusual name! I have a cousin with that name. Everyone calls her Cubby. The problem with your choice in mattress is twofold. The memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat, allowing you to sink into a still bag of air. The right bed for you starts with an individually pocketed coil system for contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine, while also relieving pressure points at the hip and shoulder. (Keep in mind that fibromyalgia is a surface condition. You can ignore the fact that the inside of your body requires some degree of firm support. To ignore that for the sake of the softness needed for your fibromyalgia will result in back pain…just making matters worse.) Mattresses like The Williams Kingston Plush and the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss…both are excellent quality, using the aforementioned pocketed coil system and both use Pure, Organic & Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery. And, both are currently on sale. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes: setup in your bedroom and removal of all packaging materials and removal of your old mattress. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress comes with ups delivery to the front door, but comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Here are links to each of those mattresses: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 While both of the mattresses are comfortable, dealing with fibromyalgia can take the question of comfort to a whole other level. Add a soft mattress topper will, more than likely, be necessary. Soft Latex will provide long lasting additional comfort. The best value in latex toppers comes from Latex for Less. I recommend 3” Soft, and a cover to go with it. Here’s the link for that: Latex for Less Mattress Toppers https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Fibromyalgia tends to be a progressive condition. If your condition worsens or is already far advanced, then a latex topper may not be enough. Under these conditions, you’ll want to include the PlushBeds Alternative Down Mattress Topper. It is incredibly soft…much more durable than real down but not as long lasting as latex. Having a soft latex topper as a base for this topper is still recommended. PlushBeds Alternative Down Mattress Topper https://www.plushbeds.com/products/alternative-down-bed-topper?sscid=71k8_rmssu&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051&variant=32001051787362 You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. My son is 11 years old. Are memory foam mattresses good for him? What do you recommend, soft or firm? Thank you, Karen Hi Karen, Memory foam isn’t good for anyone. It wears quickly, sleeps hot and you certainly don’t want to expose your son to the chemical off gassing. Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals. Some, of which, are highly toxic. A body requires firm support and a comfortable surface to sleep well. A growing body will benefit from the independent suspension type of support provided by an individually pocketed coil system, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine and continually adjusts to the changing size of a growing child. It’s at this age, when your son will begin to put on weight…not long before he’s fully grown. There are two mattresses that I recommend: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress, which comes with White Glove Delivery that includes Removal of the Old Mattress. Or, The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. In Medium if he’s average size, Medium Firm if he’s already a large boy. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Both mattresses use a pocketed coil & Pure, Organic & Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery. Long lasting, no sleeping hot and no chemicals to off gas. Both are currently on sale. I slept on a Mira Luma ll plush mattress for a week at hunting camp and fell in love with the bed. I bought a new king bed a year ago and I hate it. It wasn't cheap. Is there a mattress out there that would come close to the Mira? I get really hot at night and sleep with a fan on. Thank you, Sharon Hi Sharon, The Mira Luma is an old, discontinued mattress. What most people hate about so many of today’s mattresses, is the memory foam upholstery that’s so widely used. Memory foam is the only one of the foams that’s temperature sensitive. It softens as it warms from your body’s heat, and then it reflects that heat back to you. All memory foams wear quickly and most off gas the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made. Overall, a horrible product to totally avoid. Latex, conversely, has been the best upholstery material for the last 100+ years. An individually pocketed coil system to provide firm, contouring support that’s designed to maintain the natural alignment of your body and spine, that’s upholstered with soft pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex is your best option. Long lasting. No sleeping hot. No memory foam. I highly recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Shown here: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Thanks, Pete - TME Delivery is Always Free Online Ordering is Easy & Secure. I was wondering if you could suggest a comparable king size mattress to the Wynn Dream Bed? I’ve stayed a few times at the Encore in Boston & have become obsessed with that mattress- I love everything about it except for the price LOL! So if you know of a similar feeling mattress at a lower price point I’d be happy to buy it from you. Thanks for your help, Jenn Hi Jenn, There isn’t much specific information about that mattress, and some misinformation. For instance, Redditt says it’s a Serta. Actually, it’s a Sealy. While there’s no information about the upholstery materials, Sealy is owned by Tempurpedic…with their primary upholstery being memory foam. It’s a 15” pillowtop mattress, with an expensive cover. My recommendation for similar support, using the same coil system used by Sealy, and upholstery layers that are far superior to memory foam. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress..upholstered with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery. This mattress a is 12” thick, non-pillowtop. The pillowtop part of any pillowtop mattress is the first thing to show dramatic wear. Once that happens, you need a new mattress to, again, be comfortable. We don’t recommend pillowtop mattresses for this reason. A better alternative is to add a mattress topper to your mattress for that luxurious feel that a pillowtop provides…in essence, a removable pillowtop. This way, as the years go by, the topper is all you need to replace. It’s much more cost effective. Here’s a link to that PlushBeds mattress. It available in Medium or Medium Firm. I recommend the Medium Firm for greater longevity…and especially if the users are noticeably overweight. The choice of Medium is better for light to average weight people. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period…and, currently on sale. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 The best upholstery material has always been pure latex. For that luxurious you’re after, add a 3” Soft Pure Latex Topper. Nobody has a better price than Latex for Less. Together with that mattress, you’ll have the 15” thickness of the Wynn bed. I recommend getting the optional cover to go with it.: Shown here: Latex for Less Mattress Toppers https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 ****** You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. I would like to know the recommended mattress for someone with rheumatoid arthritis and wakes sore every morning or whenever I lay down? Thanks, Bette Hi Bette, Every body requires some degree of firm support for proper spinal alignment and some degree of surface softness for comfort. Body weight and ailments, such as yours, are factors in determining which mattress is best. Also important, is the quality of the components inside the mattress. A mattress using an individually pocketed coil system for support will provide the pushback support you need for maintaining the natural alignment of your body and spine, while also providing pressure point relief at the hip and shoulder. The best upholstery material for excellent surface comfort and durability is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex…the best upholstery material for the last 100+ years…with memory foam being the worst on both counts. My recommendation is The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress Shown Here: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 You’ll notice that it’s available in Medium and Medium Firm. Medium if you’re light to average in weight. Medium Firm if you’re heavier. ALSO: You don’t want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. Your website and blog are very informative and we have learned a lot the past few days. You seem knowledgeable, interested and honest . . . a rare combination. We hope you can help us, too. Our current mattress is 18 years old. I am 5’8” 135lb with a history of two fractured thoracic vertebrae, sciatica and frequent neck, upper back and shoulder pain. My wife is 5’6”, 145 lbs with mild scoliosis and some general back pain. Any help would be appreciated, Randy Hi Randy, A mattress that uses an individually pocketed coil system is designed to maintain the natural alignment of the body and spine. THIS, is what relieves chronic back and shoulder pain. A mattress like that, which is upholstered with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex, will provide long lasting surface comfort. What are some tips to avoid Heat retention on the mattress while sleeping. My research has indicated that Coil mattresses are best, and to avoid a memory foam top. Can you confirm this and do you have more tips? What is the best mattress I can buy that will address the heat problem? Best Regards, Robert Hi Robert, Of all the foams used by the mattress industry, only memory foam is temperature sensitive. That is to say, memory foam is specifically designed to react to the body heat you give off….softening as it warms. It then reflects that heat back to you. Heat retention is only one of the problems that’s unique to memory foam. Memory foam isn’t very resilient and has a tendency to wear quickly. And, if all that isn’t enough to make you want to avoid any mattress upholstered with it, most memory foams also off gas the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made. Avoiding buying any mattress that has memory foam in it is Tip #1. If you already have a memory foam upholstered mattress, you can add a pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex mattress topper, which will insulate you from the memory foam. Doing so, will prevent you from sleeping hot and prevent the mattress from premature wear…Tip #2. Latex does not off gas, but adding a latex topper will not prevent the memory foam from off gassing. Best buy in latex toppers is had from Latex for Less. They have a choice of thickness and a choice of comfort levels. I am so miserable with my current king size memory foam mattress. This was a bad choice as I have tried sleeping on it for a couple of months, and now I’m waking up with aches and pains. Before this bed I made the mistake of buying a spring air pillow top that cost me around $2,000 and it started sagging after only 3 years and it started to tear apart at the seams. I am a side sleeper, am about 5'4 weigh 185, would like your thoughts on what mattresses to consider....I'm tired of aches and pains and tired of wasting money. Thanks, Theresa Hi Theresa, Your previous Spring Air was also upholstered with memory foam. Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented…for the reasons you mentioned and more. I recommend a mattress that has an individually pocketed coil system that’s upholstered with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex. This coil system provides firm, contouring support that maintains the natural ailment of your body and spine. Latex foam is the most resilient of all the foams, providing unparalleled comfort that stays like new for many years. A mattress with these components is what will relieve all of your aches and pains. It’s what we sleep on at home. For your size, I have two excellent options for you. Both include the components I’ve mentioned. Each provides a different service, so it’ll come down to which service appeals more to you. PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Peri Or Williams Kingston Plush Mattress comes with White Glove Delivery.
