Hi Pete,
I'm finally narrowing my mattress decision to latex. I have disc degeneration in my neck and back. I am a side/stomach sleeper. Which one would you recommend? Many thanks for your time and effort in educating the world about mattresses! Rob Hi Rob, Having degenerative discs, you’ll want to avoid any all foam mattress…even all latex. No all foam mattress will provide the pushback support needed to keep your spine properly aligned. Instead, opt of a mattress that uses an individually pocketed coil system which will be the best for relieving chronic pain. This type of mattress that’s upholstered with latex will maximize your comfort and the longevity of the mattress. I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress for you. My husband is 6'2', 210 lbs. I'm 5'5', 150 lbs. He needs a firmer mattress than I do, and we've spent thousands of dollars and lots of sleepless nights in the last 10 years, buying mattress after mattress that we can't use. We thought investing in the Select Comfort system would be the answer...he would have it very firm, I could go softer. Nope. It still has the body impression problems, and my husband is in great back pain. We have also tried Kingsdown, a local mattress dealer's in-house brand...what should we try next? Thanks, Ann Hi Ann, Kingsdown, is a limited distribution company…which is why it seemed like your retailer’s in-house brand. They are available nationwide, but only through one retailer in each marketplace. Everybody needs some degree of firm support and some degree of surface comfort. You can achieve a happy balance for both of you with a mattress on the firmer side and a latex topper to soften the surface. My recommendation comes in two parts. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm, and a Latex for Less 2”Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper. The mattress uses an individually pocketed coil system which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. The latex topper provides additional surface comfort that creates the feeling that you’re floating. He’ll enjoy that, as well. My husband has two herniated disc in his lower back and we are looking for a new mattress to help him sleep and help relieve the pain. We are confused with all the types of mattresses and need some help. Thanks, Louisa Hi Louisa, There are many types of mattresses, as you’ve noted. Most are worthless, specifically designed to need frequent replacing. You can easily avoid repeating your husband’s back pain by avoiding any mattress upholstered with memory foam. Focus on a mattress that uses an individually pocketed coil system for proper spinal alignment and latex upholstery for long lasting surface comfort. One of the best buys is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. We have a 5 year old Sealy (Plush Pillowtop) mattress that has always been too hot, and is now causing pain in the lower back. The mattress still looks to be in good condition, with no obvious indentations to look at it. But it feels like I’m sinking into it. Options seem to be; try a latex topper, or return mattress to Sealy for refurbishment, or replace it. Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Brian Hi Brian, Sending a mattress back to the manufacturer to be refurbished is not an option. That hasn’t been an option for several decades. If going with a latex topper, you’ll find that works better if you first flip the mattress over before adding it. The flip side provides a firmer base support for your back and the topper provides the comfort. If going with this option, I recommend Latex for Less as your best value….shown here: Natural Latex Mattress Topper latexforless.com Today’s mattresses that are upholstered with memory foam, as yours is, are designed to last only a few years. Your best option is a replacement…a mattress upholstered with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex…and NOT memory foam. Latex has been the best upholstery material for the last 100+ years. I have been looking at your blog for the past month or so. Both my husband and I weigh about 220 pounds and have been through multiple mattresses in the past ten years. We did purchase a firm latex bed a few years ago and it was very hard. We ended up exchanging it for a pillowtop plush latex, which ended up with ruts after about a year and a half. If only we had known to put a latex topper on the firm bed! Right now we are sleeping on an inexpensive memory foam bed that was comfortable for me for about two months. I don't sleep well on it. What I get from your blog is that we need a firm bed with a latex topper. I have several questions: · What bed do you recommend for us? · We live in the pacific northwest. If we have a bed delivered and it doesn't work for us, are we once again stuck with a bed we hate? · How do you know what thickness of latex topper is right? Thanks for your help, Joan Hi Joan, Start with a mattress using an individually pocketed coil system for proper spinal alignment and Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm is my recommendation for you. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Add to that, a Latex for Less 3” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper to maximize surface comfort. Click on each of these links. We have navigated some of the mattress confusion thanks to your site and dealing with some helpful and some incompetent sales people! We want to purchase a queen size mattress for a 2nd home. Although I am concerned about the back and hip issues I have, it is a bed that will only be slept in for 2-3 months a year and not always by us. We would like the mattress to really last about 10 years. As we are trying to keep costs down, we are wondering what you might recommend. We appreciate your informative blog and website! Alice Hi Alice, You don’t need to spend a lot to get a high quality mattress. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress is ideal for your needs. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine for back pain relief. The Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery provides extraordinary comfort and relief of pressure point pain. Pure Latex is also the most durable upholstery material available. First, thank you for your blog. It has certainly helped make some sense out of all of the disinformation out there. Second, my wife and I are looking to buy our first new mattress and could use your guidance. We need a high quality queen mattress and foundation and are comfortable spending something in the $2000 range. We are both relatively young, so no special considerations or specific problems, but we would like a decent amount of support balanced with a bit of softness. You've convinced me to stay away from the pillowtops and memory foam, and I'm currently thinking that a firm tight top and a latex topper would be the way to go. What would you recommend that would fit the bill? Thanks again, Ron Hi Ron, With the mattress I’m recommending, a separate topper may not be necessary. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress has that balance of firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface you’re looking for. The individually pocketed coils provide proper spinal alignment and the upholstery is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex. Shown here: https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Pair that with a Magniflex KD Foundation, which is available in your choice of height and color. It assembles easily with no tools needed. I've really enjoyed reading your blog and the feedback you give is really helpful and informative! We had a Simmons Beautyrest mattress for 15 years. We recently bought in to the Tempurpedic craze and purchased a mattress from their "Cloud" line. It was like sleeping on a marshmallow. It made our backs hurt even more and left us extremely hot all night. We are now considering going back to a Simmons Beautyrest pillow top as it seems like it will give us a good balance of soft and firm. My husband is a side sleeper with lower back problems and I am a side sleeper that ends up on my back at the end of the night. My back issues are really between my shoulder blades. Which would be your recommendation based on this information? Thank you, Joan Hi Joan, An awful lot has changed in the last 15 years. Simmons was sold to an investment group about 8 years ago and are now using the same kind of foams used by Tempurpedic. Buying one of today’s Beautyrest mattresses will result in the same problems you’re experiencing now. What has always made a Beautyrest s9 comfortable is the individually pocketed coils that provide firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. Couple that coil system with the comfort of Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex foam and you’ll have everything you want for your back and shoulders, and for many years to come. For you, I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. I've been looking for the "old" mattresses that used to be very comfortable and last for about 20 years! Back in 2000 I had a mattress like that. For the past several years, I've only found mattresses with memory foam...which is too hot to sleep on, and basically a piece of crap! Why don't they make mattresses like they used to? Where can I find a mattress that has no memory foam, latex, etc. like the ones you could find over 20 years ago? Thanks, Darleen Hi Darleen, When you say, “They”, I assume that you’re talking about the Name Brands. All of them have been sold. The names are the same. The quality is not. There are manufacturers who make mattresses without memory foam. TME specializes in mattresses without memory foam. None of the mattresses on our website have any memory foam in them. Almost all of them are upholstered with Pure, Organic Latex foam. Here’s a link to our website: https://www.themattressexpert.com/#/ Our current top recommendation is for the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. Excellent quality, comfort and not expensive…and currently On Sale.
