The two queen mattresses are Simmons Beautyrest Westbury which have been comfortable and held up well over the years but the time has come to replace all mattresses with an equivalent mattress.

Equivalent isn’t possible, as Simmons was sold in 2016.
All Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are now upholstered with memory foam.

Memory foam is specifically designed to wear much more quickly.
It’s a temperature sensitive material that reacts to your body’s heat.
It sleeps hot, allows your body to sink into the mattress and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. It’s a horrible product…the worst thing ever invented by this industry. All of the name brands have been sold since 2013.
All are using memory foam and are far lower in quality than they had been.

Your mattresses were upholstered with polyurethane foam, primarily.
Almost no mattresses are using poly foam today, as it was inexpensive and lasted a long time. 

What made a Beautyrest mattress unique at the time you bought those, was the individually pocketed coils that provide firm but contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of your body and spine.
That coil system was so popular, that it’s now available from almost every mattress manufacturer.

Pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex foam is and has been the highest quality upholstery material for the last 100, or so years and is widely available today.
Polyurethane was invented in the late 1960s.
Memory was invented about 25 years ago.

Having said all that, we sell nothing with memory foam.
All of our innerspring mattresses use individually pocketed coils and latex foam upholstery. So, you will be able to replace your mattresses with something similar in terms of support, comfort and longevity.
Given the limited use they’ll be getting, all of my recommendations will serve you well for decades.

Normally you’d want to replace your old boxsprings, as well…assuming you have them, as opposed to platform beds.
Putting a new mattress on an old boxspring will immediately void their manufacturer’s warranty. 
However, since yours have been used only a few months out of the year, it’s a good gamble that you’ll be ok using them. I recommend rotating them before putting your new mattresses on them.


If you’d rather replace your old boxsprings, you have a couple of options:
Most economical:
Boxsprings from Costco, Sam’s Club and Big Lots are the least expensive, but you would have to go and get them. Delivery is not available.

Final Thoughts:
Having been in this business for more than 50 years and watching the name brands go from being quality based to profit based companies, I hate to see perfectly good older mattresses being discarded simply because they are old. If your mattresses are still providing you with a supportive, comfortable night’s sleep, they don’t need to be replaced.


If still supportive but less comfortable than they once were, you can breathe new life and comfort into them by simply adding a latex topper.

A google search produced nothing for that particular model.
Model names for that same mattress would have been different at every store that carried it, at the time you bought it.

How old is it? And what’s in it?
This information can be found on the white law label that’s sewn into one of the seams at the head end of the mattress.

Since this mattress is most likely no longer being made, and since Sealy was sold 12 years ago, Sealy won’t have one like it. Their quality is no longer as good, since 
Tempur-Pedic bought them.

A recommendation for something similar would have to come from a different brand…if there is one.

How old are the people who are using the mattress?
What are the sizes of the people, heights and weights…more or less?
Are there any physical ailments that need to be addressed?

We are both 60 years old, side sleepers 140 and 180 pounds. 
We like soft feeling mattress, but on the medium to firm side. No pillow top. 
The one we have is comfortable but I thought it was all latex ,but after checking that label, see now that it’s 41% latex and 56% polyurethane foam. 
Any suggestions appreciated.

Thank you. That’s all very helpful information.
As the years go by, we all tend to develop worn discs in our spines.
At 60 years of age, this is more likely to be the case than not.
For this reason, I don’t recommend an all foam mattress…not even latex, which is the best of all the foams.

Instead of the polyurethane, which is now supporting the latex in your mattress, 
I recommend an individually pocketed coil system .
These coils provide the pushback support against your spine that keeps everything in place…your backs and spines properly aligned.
This is something that no all foam mattress can do.
A mattress with individually pocketed coils and pure, organic latex upholstery will provide the kind of comfort that you’ve been used to and better support.

Pure latex is extremely resilient, so the one I’m recommending won’t be too soft, even though it’s rated as plush.

I am desperate to buy mattresses for my new home, king, queen and twin. The only mattress I've slept on and loved for 25 yrs is the Sealy Posturepe Montoire. What is a good replacement???
The Saatva looks great, but almost $3k for a king is a bit pricy.


There is always Costco's Sealy inner spring plush... but the reviews are so mixed I'm scared to go there.

Nothing is made like your old Sealy.
All of the name brands have been sold.
Sealy and S&F in 2013…Simmons and Serta in 2016.
All of them are now using memory foam…not used in your 25 y/o Sealy.

Memory foam is specifically designed to wear much more quickly and mattresses made with it to need much more frequent replacing.
And if that’s not bad enough, it consists of 61 different chemicals.
They don’t bother to cure the foam, like they did the poly foam in your old Sealy, so those  toxic chemicals off gas in your bedroom.
Memory foam is the only temperature sensitive upholstery material. It softens as it warms from your body’s heat, reflects that heat back to you, and allows the heavier parts of your body you to sink into it, which causes back pain and numbness of the extremities.

The mattress my wife and I have at home is more than 10 years old and still like new, despite each of us weighing more than 200 lbs.
What’s more, I sleep and wake without pain, despite having a very bad back.
I would recommend Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush for your king. 
It’s the highest quality mattress that I’ve been able to find while shopping at the industry trade shows.
Due to the high quality of the components, it’s not as soft as it sounds.

Simmons was sold in 2016 to an investment group that also bought Serta.
The upholstery material was changed to a cheap memory foam that is designed to cause mattresses to need more frequent replacing.

Is there a rule of thumb about how long I should keep it? 
If it is time for a new one, and I think I am getting close, what would you suggest? I sleep on my stomach most of the time, with some time spent on my left side. I weigh about 200 lbs. I read an old post in which you suggested the Sealy Reserve line, but I believe that the line has been discontinued. 
I am not partial to any one manufacturer. 
I'm looking to spend $700-$1,000 for queen size for something that is medium - firm. What are my options?

How long you should keep your mattress depends on who you ask.
To my way of thinking, the life of the mattress is dependent upon 4 things:
How well it’s made…how much you weigh…how well you take care of it…
and most importantly, how well you’re sleeping.


12 years ago, most mattresses were well made…much better than today.
Many salespeople you ask, would love to have you replace your perfectly good old mattress. 


When the time comes, which doesn’t seem to be today, the best mattress for the dollars you’re looking to spend, is the Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex.

I am in the market to replace my ancient queen mattress/box springs but am dealing with a couple of issues:
1) My husband and I are heavy people, around 200 lbs and are around the same height. We are both side sleepers.
2) I have back pain/degenerated discs and he has bad knees/feet.
I suppose I am looking for something sturdy (resistant to sagging) that will address the pain issues. Neither likes a soft mattress.

Today’s pillowtops are much thicker than they were 15 years ago.
As a result, they sag quite easily.
So, it’s better to get a mattress without a pillowtop and add a mattress topper, (a removable pillowtop), if you want more softness.

AND…
You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation.
The mattress won’t feel or wear as it should due to weak spots that develop in an old foundation.
And, doing so will void the warranty of any mattress.
If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray.
They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed.
They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced.

Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials.
Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free.
