Hi Pete,
I’m in the market for a new mattress. My current mattress is a Simmons Beautyrest Advantage. I know they’ve been discontinued for quite some time. On the tag it says the model is M23011.60.7405. I know it’s a shot in the dark but would you know if they carry something similar? I don’t even know where to begin looking!! Thank you for any help you can provide! Adam Hi Adam, Simmons was sold in 2016 to an investment group that also bought Serta. The upholstery material was changed to a cheap memory foam that is designed to cause mattresses to need more frequent replacing. Trading off the name that had been known for quality, they’re dependent on prior customers who assume that the quality is still there. Their quality isn’t even close to what it had been. Simmons had been using polyurethane, latex…and in their later years, prior to being sold, a very high grade of memory foam. Simmons had always been famous for their individually pocketed coil system, which provides an independent suspension type of support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. THIS, more than anything else is what makes your Beautyrest so comfortable. The key to your next successful purchase is in finding a mattress that has that same type of coil system with no memory foam in it. Having been in this business for more than a half century, I recommend only non-memory foam mattresses. I have 3 mattresses to offer you that have an individually pocketed coil system and are upholstered with latex foam. Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for more than a century. Each of the mattresses I’ll be recommending include different services. Most Popular…PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. Pocketed coils and pure, organic latex…includes a 100 Night Trial. Available in Medium or Medium Firm. UPS front door delivery. Shown here: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Williams Kingston Plush Mattress Vey much like the PlushBeds mattress, a bit plusher in feel, and includes white glove delivery. Delivery includes setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packaging materials. Shown here: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT Lastly, the mattress my wife and I have been sleeping on for more than a decade…The Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush (not as soft as it sounds, due to having a much higher coil count than either of the other two). My wife and I are large people, over 200 lbs each. This is the mattress we recommend for that weight range. As you’ll see from the link, there are 3 other choices of comfort. These firmer models are recommended even heavier weight people. These mattresses also come with white glove delivery, but removal of your old mattress is NOT included. That line of mattresses, shown here: Natura Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. The mattress won’t feel or wear as it should due to weak spots that develop in an old foundation. And, doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Recommended for every mattress, is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. Hey Pete,
My mattress is a 12 year old Spring Air. Is there a rule of thumb about how long I should keep it? If it is time for a new one, and I think I am getting close, what would you suggest? I sleep on my stomach most of the time, with some time spent on my left side. I weigh about 200 lbs. I read an old post in which you suggested the Sealy Reserve line, but I believe that the line has been discontinued. I am not partial to any one manufacturer. I'm looking to spend $700-$1,000 for queen size for something that is medium - firm. What are my options? Thanks for your help, Vincent Hi Vincent, How long you should keep your mattress depends on who you ask. To my way of thinking, the life of the mattress is dependent upon 4 things: How well it’s made…how much you weigh…how well you take care of it… and most importantly, how well you’re sleeping. 12 years ago, most mattresses were well made…much better than today. Many salespeople you ask, would love to have you replace your perfectly good old mattress. When the time comes, which doesn’t seem to be today, the best mattress for the dollars you’re looking to spend, is the Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex. For your size, I recommend the Medium Firm…shown here: Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale Other Things To Keep In Mind: You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. I am in the market to replace my ancient queen mattress/box springs but am dealing with a couple of issues: 1) My husband and I are heavy people, around 200 lbs and are around the same height. We are both side sleepers. 2) I have back pain/degenerated discs and he has bad knees/feet. I suppose I am looking for something sturdy (resistant to sagging) that will address the pain issues. Neither likes a soft mattress. I would like to keep it around $3000. Thanks, Beth Hi Beth, There is a mattress that is made for heavy people, that will address your back pain, but not one that’s specifically designed to help with knees and feet. My wife and I are heavy. Each of us are more than 200 lbs. The mattress we have is over 10 years old and still in great shape. It was the best we could find while shopping at the industry trade shows…The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress. Shown here: Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-ultra-plush/92?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true I have a very bad back, including degenerative & herniated discs. This mattress allows me to sleep & wake without back pain. It will do the same for you. (Due to the high quality of the components, it’s not as soft as it sounds.) If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, reasonably priced. I am looking for a new queen size mattress. I am replacing my full pillow top englander that is 15+ years old. It actually has been a great bed for the money. I have chronic lower back problems and sleep on my side or stomach. Thanks, Carol Hi Carol, Today’s pillowtops are much thicker than they were 15 years ago. As a result, they sag quite easily. So, it’s better to get a mattress without a pillowtop and add a mattress topper, (a removable pillowtop), if you want more softness. A good mattress to start with is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss in Medium if you’re of average weight, or Medium Firm if you’re heavy. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial and is On Sale. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support that is designed to maintain the natural alignment of the body and spine. The Soft, Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery provides extraordinary comfort, like you’re floating, and is incredibly long lasting. Here’s a link to that mattress: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 If you do find that you want to make it softer, Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality latex mattress toppers. I have a lot of sleep issues and need help choosing the right mattress. I've been an insomniac for more than 25 years. I am the lightest sleeper on the face of the Earth! If my boyfriend slightly moves a foot, I wake. Also, I have degenerative discs in my low back and if a mattress is not firm enough, my lower back kills the next day. I prefer to sleep on my stomach, but I toss throughout the night because of my back. I also have severe airborne allergies and my doctors have recommended that I get a new mattress and encase it in a product that keeps allergens and critters from entering and staying in the mattress. Can you recommend a product? In the 3 years I've been with my boyfriend I've only been able to successfully sleep with him when we stay at very nice hotels on very nice king beds. This is hard on a relationship when you can't sleep in the same bed! So, I have a lot of issues, please give me some recommendations for an appropriate king size bed. Thank you! With the coils moving independently from one another, it greatly reduces motion transfer. A mattress with that coil unit and upholstered with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex, which adds to motion reduction, provides comfort that doesn’t allow you to sink, and produces No Chemical off gassing…is the best you can do to address all of your concerns. My friend has purchased several mattresses from you, over the last couple of decades, and says you are the go to guy. Presently, we have a Tempurpedic which hubby loves because of his acid reflux (mechanical bed) but I get a back ache. Two questions: Is there anything I can do to my extra long twin side to remedy that situation? Secondly, we need a new bed to go into a different home. Any recommendations? My back seldom bothers me, but I am getting older, 64 & 160 lbs. The Temperpedic seems to aggravate my back and I still want to sleep with him. Help this 42 year marriage. Thanks, Mary Hi Mary, You may have a very easy fix for that. It’s the memory foam that’s on top of your mattress that’s causing your back pain. Memory foam allows you to sink into it, which throws off the natural alignment of your body and spine. Take your mattress and flip it over. The underside is firm polyurethane foam, which won’t allow your body to sink. It’s very likely to be too firm for comfort, so just add a 2” or 3” Soft Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper for extraordinary comfort that lasts for years, creating the feeling that you’re floating. Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality latex mattress toppers. Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper | Latex For Less For your other home, a mattress with individually pocketed coils for support and pure, organic latex upholstery, is my recommendation. My 7 year old daughter has a pudendal nerve issue and because of it has lower back spasms and sometimes some sciatica nerve pain issues. I would really like to find out what mattress would work the best for her as I know from my own back issues that the wrong mattress causes more problems. For my back issues a softer latex foam mattress has worked the best, however with her spine still forming I have heard that an all foam mattress' is not the best for children. Can you please let me know what mattress would be the best for this situation? Thank you, Lisa Hi Lisa, For most children, an all latex mattress is perfect…but not for children with the back issues your daughter has. An individually pocketed coil system is best…providing firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. This type of support is best for relieving her pain. A mattress like this that upholstered with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam will provide comfort and longevity. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm is my recommendation…a mattress that will provide the proper support and comfort she’ll need…and last until she’s grown and gone. Here’s a link to that mattress. I'm looking for a good quality mattress to replace my memory foam one. I'm a side sleeper, weight around 134 lb and don't have any back pain problems. Would an all latex mattress be a good choice? If so, I’m only interested in the highest quality you have. Regards, Margaret Hi Margaret, An all latex mattress has always been the best you can buy and is particularly right for your circumstances. If you’re looking for high quality, you’ll want to avoid latex that’s made in China, where they add clay as a filler. Since clay is a natural material, it’s sold as “all natural latex”. But it’s not pure latex and it doesn’t last very long. We carry 3 models from Suite Sleep, which are made of pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex with organic cotton covers…the highest quality available anywhere. A firm, two sided flippable mattress. I’m replacing a very old mattress set. It’s about 30 years old. My husband is a big man, approx. 250 lbs. When he gets up, the whole bed shakes. I want a mattress where that won’t happen. And, it has to be strong enough to hold up over the years under his weight. Thanks, Linzy Hi Linzy, Here are the links to the items I’m recommending. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress The individually pocketed coils will provide you with the motion transfer reduction that you’re looking for. The Natura Greenspring Mattresses are the highest quality that I could find, while shopping at the industry trade shows. I weighed 275 at the time. I’m not as heavy now, more than 10 years later. The mattress is still in great shape. The components are extremely strong…highest coil count and high density upholstery, which includes 3” of latex. Because of all this, it’s not as soft as it sounds. This is the only mattress that we carry that comes fully formed, delivered in a delivery truck with two men….as opposed to shrink wrapped rolled and boxed for ups delivery. Due to that, it has excellent edge support. Shown here: Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-ultra-plush/92?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true You can’t use your old boxspring.
