Hi Pete,
I am a 67 year old fireman. I’m 6’ 3” and weigh 280 lbs. I had a back injury in the past, with pain that is now getting worse with age. Which line of extra firm inner coil mattresses would you recommend? I have had an extra firm Simmons Beautyrest World Class mattress and boxspring for the past 15 years that has done me well, but is now sagging and needs to be replaced. Please give me your recommendations. Thanks, Rick Hi Rick, Simmons was sold in 2016. Nothing they make today will last very long, even under average body weight, due to them switching to memory foam. There’s only one mattress that I could find while shopping at the industry trade shows that will be firm enough and last long enough under a man your size that’s worth buying. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress in Firm. This mattress has the same coil system as your Simmons Beautyrest, but with a higher coil count and stronger, double tempered steel coils. The upholstery is more durable, as well…Natural Talalay Latex. Their firm model will be as firm or firmer that others labeled “extra firm”. You will also need to replace your boxspring. Here are links to that mattress and the foundation I’m recommending: Natura of Canada Greenspring Firm Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-firm/81?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true The Magniflex Upholstered KD Foundation https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/magniflex-kd-foundation-w-out-legs/2?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. Hi Pete,
What mattresses would you recommend for a short term beach rental property? We are replacing 2 queen mattresses and 4 twin mattresses. The two queen mattresses are Simmons Beautyrest Westbury which have been comfortable and held up well over the years but the time has come to replace all mattresses with an equivalent mattress. Your input will be appreciated. Thank you, Julie Good Morning Julie, Equivalent isn’t possible, as Simmons was sold in 2016. All Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are now upholstered with memory foam. Memory foam is specifically designed to wear much more quickly. It’s a temperature sensitive material that reacts to your body’s heat. It sleeps hot, allows your body to sink into the mattress and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. It’s a horrible product…the worst thing ever invented by this industry. All of the name brands have been sold since 2013. All are using memory foam and are far lower in quality than they had been. Your mattresses were upholstered with polyurethane foam, primarily. Almost no mattresses are using poly foam today, as it was inexpensive and lasted a long time. What made a Beautyrest mattress unique at the time you bought those, was the individually pocketed coils that provide firm but contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of your body and spine. That coil system was so popular, that it’s now available from almost every mattress manufacturer. Pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex foam is and has been the highest quality upholstery material for the last 100, or so years and is widely available today. Polyurethane was invented in the late 1960s. Memory was invented about 25 years ago. Having said all that, we sell nothing with memory foam. All of our innerspring mattresses use individually pocketed coils and latex foam upholstery. So, you will be able to replace your mattresses with something similar in terms of support, comfort and longevity. Given the limited use they’ll be getting, all of my recommendations will serve you well for decades. Most economical: The Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattresses. These are available in Medium and Medium-Firm. These mattresses arrive via UPS. Use this link to view and place your order: Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale If you require white glove delivery service, we have a bit higher grade that comes with that type of delivery, which also includes removal of all your old mattresses. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattresses are also a bit more comfortable. Shown Here: Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT Normally you’d want to replace your old boxsprings, as well…assuming you have them, as opposed to platform beds. Putting a new mattress on an old boxspring will immediately void their manufacturer’s warranty. However, since yours have been used only a few months out of the year, it’s a good gamble that you’ll be ok using them. I recommend rotating them before putting your new mattresses on them. If you’d rather replace your old boxsprings, you have a couple of options: Most economical: Boxsprings from Costco, Sam’s Club and Big Lots are the least expensive, but you would have to go and get them. Delivery is not available. Our Magniflex KD Upholstered Foundations are a bit dressier…available in Black, Gray or Brown and available in two heights: 5” or 8”. They assemble quickly easily with no tools needed, and are very strong. Shown Here: Magniflex KD Upholstered Foundations https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/magniflex-kd-foundation-w-out-legs/2?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector https://www.themattressexpert.com/sleep_and_beyond_protectors_and_encasements. Delivery is free and there’s no sales tax. Everything arrives within a couple to a few weeks. Delivery/Tracking information is provided as each item ships. Final Thoughts: Having been in this business for more than 50 years and watching the name brands go from being quality based to profit based companies, I hate to see perfectly good older mattresses being discarded simply because they are old. If your mattresses are still providing you with a supportive, comfortable night’s sleep, they don’t need to be replaced. If still supportive but less comfortable than they once were, you can breathe new life and comfort into them by simply adding a latex topper. Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality, pure latex mattress toppers anywhere. 2” of Soft Latex will do an amazing job of making you comfortable. If going this route instead, I recommend getting the optional cotton covers to go with them. Can you suggest a replacement for an old Sealy Posturpedic Birch Bridge Latex Mattress? Thanks, Theresa Hi Theresa, A google search produced nothing for that particular model. Model names for that same mattress would have been different at every store that carried it, at the time you bought it. How old is it? And what’s in it? This information can be found on the white law label that’s sewn into one of the seams at the head end of the mattress. Since this mattress is most likely no longer being made, and since Sealy was sold 12 years ago, Sealy won’t have one like it. Their quality is no longer as good, since Tempur-Pedic bought them. A recommendation for something similar would have to come from a different brand…if there is one. How old are the people who are using the mattress? What are the sizes of the people, heights and weights…more or less? Are there any physical ailments that need to be addressed? All of this information will help me to recommend a mattress to you that’s best suited to your needs. Thanks, Pete - TME ************** Hi Pete, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. We are both 60 years old, side sleepers 140 and 180 pounds. We like soft feeling mattress, but on the medium to firm side. No pillow top. The one we have is comfortable but I thought it was all latex ,but after checking that label, see now that it’s 41% latex and 56% polyurethane foam. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks again, Theresa Hi Theresa, Thank you. That’s all very helpful information. As the years go by, we all tend to develop worn discs in our spines. At 60 years of age, this is more likely to be the case than not. For this reason, I don’t recommend an all foam mattress…not even latex, which is the best of all the foams. Instead of the polyurethane, which is now supporting the latex in your mattress, I recommend an individually pocketed coil system . These coils provide the pushback support against your spine that keeps everything in place…your backs and spines properly aligned. This is something that no all foam mattress can do. A mattress with individually pocketed coils and pure, organic latex upholstery will provide the kind of comfort that you’ve been used to and better support. Pure latex is extremely resilient, so the one I’m recommending won’t be too soft, even though it’s rated as plush. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress is that recommendation. It comes with white glove delivery, which includes setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packaging materials. Shown here: Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT If you’re using a matching boxspring that’s the same age, you’ll need to replace that, as well. Putting a new mattress on an old boxspring will immediately void the warranty of any mattress. If you have a platform bed instead of a boxspring, then all you need is the mattress. If you do need a new foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation. It assembles easily without the need of tools. It’s available in 2 heights, 5” or 8”…and your choice of 3 colors. Shown here: The Magniflex KD Foundation https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/magniflex-kd-foundation-w-out-legs/2?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. I am desperate to buy mattresses for my new home, king, queen and twin. The only mattress I've slept on and loved for 25 yrs is the Sealy Posturepe Montoire. What is a good replacement??? The Saatva looks great, but almost $3k for a king is a bit pricy. There is always Costco's Sealy inner spring plush... but the reviews are so mixed I'm scared to go there. What do you recommend? Thanks, Betsy Hi Betsy, Nothing is made like your old Sealy. All of the name brands have been sold. Sealy and S&F in 2013…Simmons and Serta in 2016. All of them are now using memory foam…not used in your 25 y/o Sealy. Memory foam is specifically designed to wear much more quickly and mattresses made with it to need much more frequent replacing. And if that’s not bad enough, it consists of 61 different chemicals. They don’t bother to cure the foam, like they did the poly foam in your old Sealy, so those toxic chemicals off gas in your bedroom. Memory foam is the only temperature sensitive upholstery material. It softens as it warms from your body’s heat, reflects that heat back to you, and allows the heavier parts of your body you to sink into it, which causes back pain and numbness of the extremities. The mattress my wife and I have at home is more than 10 years old and still like new, despite each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. What’s more, I sleep and wake without pain, despite having a very bad back. I would recommend Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush for your king. It’s the highest quality mattress that I’ve been able to find while shopping at the industry trade shows. Due to the high quality of the components, it’s not as soft as it sounds. Shown here: Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-ultra-plush/92?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true You can’t go wrong with that mattress for all 3, I suspect that you won’t need that high of quality for the other two. Similarly made, but with a lower coil count, is the Williams Kingston Plush is an excellent choice for the other two…or even your king if you’re carrying average body weight. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT You can save even more if twin is for a child. Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale Needless to say, none of these mattresses have any memory foam in them. We sell no mattresses with memory foam. All of these mattresses use an individually pocketed coil system, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. All are upholstered with Latex, which has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years…longest lasting and most comfortable, creating the unique feeling that you’re floating. If you need a new boxspring for any of these mattresses, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. I’m in the market for a new mattress. My current mattress is a Simmons Beautyrest Advantage. I know they’ve been discontinued for quite some time. On the tag it says the model is M23011.60.7405. I know it’s a shot in the dark but would you know if they carry something similar? I don’t even know where to begin looking!! Thank you for any help you can provide! Adam Hi Adam, Simmons was sold in 2016 to an investment group that also bought Serta. The upholstery material was changed to a cheap memory foam that is designed to cause mattresses to need more frequent replacing. Trading off the name that had been known for quality, they’re dependent on prior customers who assume that the quality is still there. Their quality isn’t even close to what it had been. Simmons had been using polyurethane, latex…and in their later years, prior to being sold, a very high grade of memory foam. Simmons had always been famous for their individually pocketed coil system, which provides an independent suspension type of support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. THIS, more than anything else is what makes your Beautyrest so comfortable. The key to your next successful purchase is in finding a mattress that has that same type of coil system with no memory foam in it. Having been in this business for more than a half century, I recommend only non-memory foam mattresses. I have 3 mattresses to offer you that have an individually pocketed coil system and are upholstered with latex foam. Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for more than a century. Each of the mattresses I’ll be recommending include different services. Most Popular…PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. Pocketed coils and pure, organic latex…includes a 100 Night Trial. Available in Medium or Medium Firm. UPS front door delivery. Delivery includes setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packaging materials. My wife and I are large people, over 200 lbs each. This is the mattress we recommend for that weight range. As you’ll see from the link, there are 3 other choices of comfort. These firmer models are recommended even heavier weight people. These mattresses also come with white glove delivery, but removal of your old mattress is NOT included. That line of mattresses, shown here: Natura Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. The mattress won’t feel or wear as it should due to weak spots that develop in an old foundation. And, doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. My mattress is a 12 year old Spring Air. Is there a rule of thumb about how long I should keep it? If it is time for a new one, and I think I am getting close, what would you suggest? I sleep on my stomach most of the time, with some time spent on my left side. I weigh about 200 lbs. I read an old post in which you suggested the Sealy Reserve line, but I believe that the line has been discontinued. I am not partial to any one manufacturer. I'm looking to spend $700-$1,000 for queen size for something that is medium - firm. What are my options? Thanks for your help, Vincent Hi Vincent, How long you should keep your mattress depends on who you ask. To my way of thinking, the life of the mattress is dependent upon 4 things: How well it’s made…how much you weigh…how well you take care of it… and most importantly, how well you’re sleeping. 12 years ago, most mattresses were well made…much better than today. Many salespeople you ask, would love to have you replace your perfectly good old mattress. When the time comes, which doesn’t seem to be today, the best mattress for the dollars you’re looking to spend, is the Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex. For your size, I recommend the Medium Firm…shown here: Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale Other Things To Keep In Mind: You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. I am in the market to replace my ancient queen mattress/box springs but am dealing with a couple of issues: 1) My husband and I are heavy people, around 200 lbs and are around the same height. We are both side sleepers. 2) I have back pain/degenerated discs and he has bad knees/feet. I suppose I am looking for something sturdy (resistant to sagging) that will address the pain issues. Neither likes a soft mattress. I would like to keep it around $3000. Thanks, Beth Hi Beth, There is a mattress that is made for heavy people, that will address your back pain, but not one that’s specifically designed to help with knees and feet. My wife and I are heavy. Each of us are more than 200 lbs. The mattress we have is over 10 years old and still in great shape. It was the best we could find while shopping at the industry trade shows…The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress. I am looking for a new queen size mattress. I am replacing my full pillow top englander that is 15+ years old. It actually has been a great bed for the money. I have chronic lower back problems and sleep on my side or stomach. Thanks, Carol Hi Carol, Today’s pillowtops are much thicker than they were 15 years ago. As a result, they sag quite easily. So, it’s better to get a mattress without a pillowtop and add a mattress topper, (a removable pillowtop), if you want more softness. A good mattress to start with is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss in Medium if you’re of average weight, or Medium Firm if you’re heavy. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial and is On Sale. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support that is designed to maintain the natural alignment of the body and spine. The Soft, Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery provides extraordinary comfort, like you’re floating, and is incredibly long lasting.
