I just got married and my husband has a newer latex king size mattress.

Since we got married, we have ordered a bed, but aren't sure what sort of foundation to get for it.

It looks like all you need is a standard foundation.
The least expensive places to buy one are at Costco, Sam's Club or Big Lots.
Their mattresses are worthless, but their foundations are perfectly fine.
They don't deliver. You have to pick it up.

Hi Pete,
I have a bad back and my mom has had a fractured back. 
We tried a memory foam mattress at the store and was told that it would help relieve our pain.
it was soft and comfy, but once we bought it, my mom's back wasn't being helped, and neither was mine.  
I have headaches and the smell is awful. 
The bed, which they claim it is plush and soft, feels like a ton of bricks.
Is buying a memory foam really the answer to a fractured back for my mom? And what about for myself too? 
I seem to have worse headaches and backaches than before.
My shoulder hurts and sides too, from this bed. Everyone told me it was good. 
I heard it from the TV, and the sales people at the store.
It was hurting before too but hasn't gone away like the sales person said. 
What mattress is good for what I have and what my mom has?
What mattress is really the answer for a fractured back and a bad back. 
And for someone who has allergies and headaches is this the answer?
 
My mom's age is 82, she is 5'5", not sure about her weight but she is anemic and fragile. 
Besides a fractured back, she also suffers with fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis.
She sleeps on her back with a pillow under her legs. Although I also see her sleep on the left side.
I am 54, 5' 9", 158 lbs. I, too, sleep on my back and both sides. 
I have back and upper shoulder pain, along with aches in my sides. 
I have osteoma Lecia which is soft bone.

Memory foam is, in fact, thee worst choice you could have made.
There's an old saying, "Tell a lie often enough, and it becomes the truth".
It's a saying I disagree with, in part, as a lie never becomes the truth...just perceived as such.
All those TV ads and sales pitches are just that...a string of lies that have been told over and over... 
for the last 20+ years.
 
Memory foam is thee absolute worst upholstery material ever invented for use in a mattress.
Its specific purpose is to sell more mattresses, more frequently to the same people...all for the sake of profit.
The lies told about how good memory foam is, is so forceful, that many people will make the mistake you made...over and over again...never thinking that the memory foam is the problem.
After all, the ads and sales pitches promote that junk as though it were the best thing since sliced bread.
 
Add to all that poor quality and performance, the off gassing of the toxic chemicals from which it's made, (the source of your headaches), and you add insult to injury.
Get rid of them...right away...before they cause more damage to you and your mom....more damage than you already have now.
Memory foam is the industry's cash cow and they are milking it for all it's worth...all at the expense of the health and well being of the consumer.
It's no less than a criminal matter, that needs government intervention.
 
You have to understand what your body needs...firm contouring support that maintains your spine's natural alignment, and a comfortable sleeping surface.
The firm support is for your spine. The softer surface is for your pressure points and muscles.
It makes fiscal sense to use the best materials available to do that job.
Mattresses made with poor quality materials, like memory foam, will begin to fail quickly, and are a poor choice for people like you and your mom.
People with your problems are much more sensitive to the changes today's mattresses easily go through...those upholstered with memory foam.
It becomes imperative that you make no substitute for quality, which changes very little over the years....and that you do not subject yourselves to toxicity poor quality of memory foam.
Instead, opt for more natural materials, which have no chemicals to off-gas.

Hello Pete,
I'm trying to solve a mattress problem. We recently bought a fairly expensive mattress.
We tested it on a box spring in the store, but the bed frame that we purchased with our house is a platform style (no prior experience with this style). We like the look of it so we gave away the box spring.
For the first couple months things were ok.
But now, my girlfriend and I are starting to experience stiffness and back pain in the middle of the night and early mornings when we had absolutely no issues prior.
These issues seem to clear up once we get moving over the course of the day, so I have to believe it's related to the mattress or the platform bed.
I was wondering what you would suggest as a solution for us to try?
The bed feels fine when we initially lie down on it, but obviously overnight something isn't agreeing with us.

Hi Dan,
Today's boxsprings are cheaply made and made to be rigid.
A platform bed provides similar support. That's not the problem.
 
Most of today's mattresses are upholstered with memory foam, my guess is that you have one of these.
Your problem is with the memory foam in your mattress.
Memory foam is a horrible product...specifically designed to cause the mattress to need frequent replacing.
For most of what is made today, equating expense with quality is a huge mistake.
The truly diabolical part of memory foam is, that when you get off of the mattress, it looks perfectly fine, because the memory foam returns to its original shape.
The point being, that prevailing in a warranty claim is highly unlikely.
Memory foam has created a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer.
There is fix to this problem. Flip the mattress over and add a soft latex topper to that.
 
This will put the memory foam at the bottom. 
The underside will provide firm support and the latex will give you the surface comfort you need to sleep well.
Ideally, it would be best to get rid of that mattress and start over with a mattress that has no memory foam.
 
If going with "the fix", here is a link to the latex topper you'll need.

Hi Pete,
I need a new king size mattress. 
I am big man, 275 lbs., and have had several spinal fusions, and there's a titanium rod in my back.
I am side sleeper with pillow between legs (helps my back and hip pain).
I currently have a Serta pillow top mattress. It's terrible. 
I also have added 6" of memory foam that doesn't help either.
I need some advice.

Well, you couldn't have chosen a worse mattress or topper.
Most people don't realize that the mattress industry has gone bad, by and large.
That Serta mattress has a weak coil unit and is already upholstered with memory foam. 
Adding more memory foam hasn't helped, because it's a lousy product.
Not only is memory foam a poor quality product, it's a health hazard.
It off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made.
 
We are large people, my wife and I. 
And, we suffer from many of the physical ailments that you have...and more.

Hi Pete,
I recently purchased a couple of different mattresses.
One was a Simmons Beautyrest extra firm, and a Saatva innerspring firm mattress.
Both mattresses gave me severe back pain.
The Simmons Beautyrest mattress was too hard on my back and gave me severe back pain after 30 days.
The Saatva mattress kind of sunk in the middle after 40-45 days of use.
I am on the heavier side, around 235 pounds with 6 ft in height.
 
I read on your blog about the latex mattresses and its benefits.  
What are some of your recommendations in this category?  
I am really looking for a mattress that can alleviate the back pain.
 
I saw from your website, that latex mattress can be full latex or can be hybrid (innerspring and latex). 
How do I choose between these two categories?
For folks on the heavier side, such as me, what is your best recommendation?

Hi Robert,
There is much more to choosing a mattress than simply the degree of firmness and softness.
To listen to all the advertising and sales pitches, you'd think that today's mattresses are all high quality. 
They aren't.
In fact, none of the name brands are made well enough to hold a large person for any length of time much beyond a year, or so.
The product in these mattresses that causes them to fail, is the memory foam upholstery.
Memory foam is a dream material, enhancing profits for the manufacturers and retailers, by causing mattresses to need frequent replacing...creating a nightmare for the consumer.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat.
Being so, memory foam will fail under people a lot lighter in weight than you.
To make a successful long term purchase, you must avoid mattresses with memory foam in them.
 
You're on the right track, with looking at latex. 
But, an all foam mattress...even one made entirely of high quality latex, may or may not be right for you.
What an all foam mattress does not provide, is push back support against your spine.
If you have any disc related back problems, you'd be better off with an innerspring mattress that's upholstered with latex...for the support worn discs require. This condition is more common, the older and heavier we are.
I, too, have several disc problems, being both, older and on the heavy side.
 
An innerspring and latex mattress is best for you, the best made is:

You can use a heated mattress pad with anything other than mattresses and toppers made with memory foam.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms.
Memory foam is aka: visco foam, gel foam, slow recovery foam.
 

Sciatica starts with a pinched nerve at the base of your spine.
The pain radiates around the hip and down the leg.
A nerve is being pinch by the vertebrae where the discs have worn.
The best way to reduce/eliminate that kind of pain is the keep the vertebrae from pinching that nerve.
This is best achieved by maintaining the natural alignment of your spine.
The best material to use for this is a mattress made with an individually pocketed coil
 
Thwarting any effort on your part is when you buy a mattress upholstered with memory foam. Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever and will cause any back problem to become worse.
 
If you don’t have the proper support, adding a topper of any kind will end up being a total waste of money.
