Hope you are well. We bought a couple mattresses from you several years ago, and we are planning to get a new bed for our 12-year-old daughter .
I'd love your advice.


We are getting her a new, larger bed. We're planning to get a Queen so we can also use it as a guest bed.  Right now, she has a very basic, not expensive, 'squishy' mattress.  I think it will likely give backaches to any adult that would sleep in that bed.


While we splurged for our own mattress, we are hoping not to spend too much for this purchase. 


Is there a mattress that you recommend that is a good guest bed mattress and not too pricey?

​Hi Pete,
We need, yet another, new mattress.
We’ve been through several over the past several years.
It wasn’t until I found your blog before realizing that it was the memory foam, all along, that’s been the problem with all of my previous mattresses.
To listen to the salesperson we’ve been dealing with, you’d think that memory foam was the latest, greatest thing. It’s all been a lie to sell mattresses.

Anyway, we want a latex hybrid mattress with pocketed coils.
After reading your blog posts, you’ve convinced me that’s what we need.
And while I trust what you’re saying, I can’t bring myself to buy any mattress without the ability to send it back if we don’t like it, after all we’ve been through.
We’re average size, middle aged people with some aches and pains that I’m attributing to the memory foam.

To be fair to the salespeople you’ve encountered, they aren’t trained to know.
Their training is in closing the sale. They’ve been told that memory foam is great and that’s what they reiterate…most of them.

​What mattresses would you recommend for a short term beach rental property? We are replacing 2 queen mattresses and 4 twin mattresses.
The two queen mattresses are Simmons Beautyrest Westbury which have been comfortable and held up well over the years but the time has come to replace all mattresses with an equivalent mattress.

Equivalent isn’t possible, as Simmons was sold in 2016.
All Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are now upholstered with memory foam.

Memory foam is specifically designed to wear much more quickly.
It’s a temperature sensitive material that reacts to your body’s heat.
It sleeps hot, allows your body to sink into the mattress and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. It’s a horrible product…the worst thing ever invented by this industry. All of the name brands have been sold since 2013.
All are using memory foam and are far lower in quality than they had been.

Your mattresses were upholstered with polyurethane foam, primarily.
Almost no mattresses are using poly foam today, as it was inexpensive and lasted a long time. 

What made a Beautyrest mattress unique at the time you bought those, was the individually pocketed coils that provide firm but contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of your body and spine.
That coil system was so popular, that it’s now available from almost every mattress manufacturer.

Pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex foam is and has been the highest quality upholstery material for the last 100, or so years and is widely available today.
Polyurethane was invented in the late 1960s.
Memory was invented about 25 years ago.

Having said all that, we sell nothing with memory foam.
All of our innerspring mattresses use individually pocketed coils and latex foam upholstery. So, you will be able to replace your mattresses with something similar in terms of support, comfort and longevity.
Given the limited use they’ll be getting, all of my recommendations will serve you well for decades.

Normally you’d want to replace your old boxsprings, as well…assuming you have them, as opposed to platform beds.
Putting a new mattress on an old boxspring will immediately void their manufacturer’s warranty. 
However, since yours have been used only a few months out of the year, it’s a good gamble that you’ll be ok using them. I recommend rotating them before putting your new mattresses on them.


If you’d rather replace your old boxsprings, you have a couple of options:
Most economical:
Boxsprings from Costco, Sam’s Club and Big Lots are the least expensive, but you would have to go and get them. Delivery is not available.

Final Thoughts:
Having been in this business for more than 50 years and watching the name brands go from being quality based to profit based companies, I hate to see perfectly good older mattresses being discarded simply because they are old. If your mattresses are still providing you with a supportive, comfortable night’s sleep, they don’t need to be replaced.


If still supportive but less comfortable than they once were, you can breathe new life and comfort into them by simply adding a latex topper.

I have been reading your comments about mattresses and am impressed by your knowledge. My husband and I, too, had slept on a Beautyrest Recharge Hospitality at a resort and fell in love with it. 
I figured it was only made for commercial use under that name and was looking to see if they made it for residential use under another name. 
We have not been happy with memory foam mattresses and would like to find one like the one you describe in the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra plush. We like a firm mattress but also one you don’t sink down into and have to climb up to turn over. 
What is the price of your King Size Mattress. 
We live in East Tennessee, are in our 70s and this will probably be the last mattress we purchase.

The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress is just as you described wanting, using the same support system as was used in that Simmons Beautyrest Mattress you liked so much.
Unfortunately, you can’t buy a Beautyrest mattress without memory foam upholstery today. That hospitality model has been discontinued.


The natural latex upholstery in that Natura Greenspring won’t allow you to sink. It feels like you’re floating. My wife and I have that mattress.
Ours is more than 10 years old and still in great condition, even with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. 


It will, indeed, be the last mattress you will need to buy.

A Sleep Number bed would be a disastrous choice for your husband’s back.
A bag of air does not provide proper support. His back pain would worsen.

A google search produced nothing for that particular model.
Model names for that same mattress would have been different at every store that carried it, at the time you bought it.

How old is it? And what’s in it?
This information can be found on the white law label that’s sewn into one of the seams at the head end of the mattress.

Since this mattress is most likely no longer being made, and since Sealy was sold 12 years ago, Sealy won’t have one like it. Their quality is no longer as good, since 
Tempur-Pedic bought them.

A recommendation for something similar would have to come from a different brand…if there is one.

How old are the people who are using the mattress?
What are the sizes of the people, heights and weights…more or less?
Are there any physical ailments that need to be addressed?


All of this information will help me to recommend a mattress to you that’s best suited to your needs.Thanks, Pete - TME

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
We are both 60 years old, side sleepers 140 and 180 pounds. 
We like soft feeling mattress, but on the medium to firm side. No pillow top. 
The one we have is comfortable but I thought it was all latex ,but after checking that label, see now that it’s 41% latex and 56% polyurethane foam. 
Any suggestions appreciated.

Thank you. That’s all very helpful information.
As the years go by, we all tend to develop worn discs in our spines.
At 60 years of age, this is more likely to be the case than not.
For this reason, I don’t recommend an all foam mattress…not even latex, which is the best of all the foams.

Instead of the polyurethane, which is now supporting the latex in your mattress, 
I recommend an individually pocketed coil system .
These coils provide the pushback support against your spine that keeps everything in place…your backs and spines properly aligned.
This is something that no all foam mattress can do.
A mattress with individually pocketed coils and pure, organic latex upholstery will provide the kind of comfort that you’ve been used to and better support.

Pure latex is extremely resilient, so the one I’m recommending won’t be too soft, even though it’s rated as plush.

It’s the memory foam now used by all the name brands that has caused all of your previous purchases to go bad so quickly.
Memory foam is specifically designed to do that, along with sleeping hot, off gassing the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made, and the sinking in that causes back pain to get worse.

We sell no mattresses that use memory foam, for all of those reasons.
All of our mattresses are upholstered with Latex foam, (none from China).
Latex is and has been the highest quality upholstery material for more than a century….Natural and Hypoallergenic.

Our recommendations are, to some degree, based on body weight.
Our very best it recommended for our heavier customers. 
Some have exceeded 500 lbs.

The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses are our best…the best we could find while shopping at the industry trade shows.
My wife and I are heavy, with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs.
We decided to try their Ultra Plush model, since we aren’t excessively heavy.
