Hi Pete,
You've got an amazing blog. I've learned so much from reading it. living in NYC, bed bugs are a huge concern. Have you ever heard of any mattress being better than the others in terms of avoiding bed bugs? Thanks, Jack Hello Jack, There’s no mattress made that will avoid getting bed bugs. However, there are products that you can add to the mattress you have that will do the job. A Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Encasement will prevent all sorts of things from getting in or out of your mattress, including bed bugs…shown here: Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Encasement 10" & 14" | C&C Mattress, LLC cc-mattress-llc.square.site Encasements are difficult to get on and off. So once on, you won’t want to take it off to launder it. Add to that, a Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector, which slips on and off easily, like a fitted sheet, for laundering. This way, the encasement remains in place. Shown here: Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector | C&C Mattress, LLC cc-mattress-llc.square.site THIS, will solve your mattress’s bed bug problem. Hi Pete,
I’m reluctant to purchase a mattress with memory foam in it. I had to throw out a memory foam topper, as I could not live with chemical off-gassing after one month. It also made my husband very hot. We currently have an old Simmons Beautyrest mattress that needs replacing. Just want a really comfy firm but soft top bed without rapid indentation...Suggestions welcome, please!!! Thanks, Elsa Hi Elsa, All of the name brands have been sold and all are using the same crappy memory foam that you already know to avoid. Best bet? The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. It uses the same type of coil system that’s in your Beautyrest, so you’ll experience the same support that your body is used to. The upholstery is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex. No Off Gassing. No Sleeping Hot. It provides surface comfort that lasts for many years. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Click on this link to view that mattress. Use the same link to place your order. Hybrid Latex Mattress - The Luxury Bliss plushbeds.com If you need a new foundation, as well, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height and color. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. Shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well. First, thank you for your blog. It has certainly helped make some sense out of all of the disinformation out there. Second, my wife and I are looking to buy our first new mattress and could use your guidance. We need a queen bed and are comfortable spending something in the $1500 to $2000 range. We are both relatively young, so no special considerations or specific problems, but we would like a decent amount of support balanced with a bit of softness. You've convinced me to stay away from the pillowtops and all foam. I'm currently thinking that a firm tight top and a topper would be the way to go. What would you recommend that would fit the bill? Thanks again, Austin Hi Austin, There are best buys at various price points. At yours, the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress @ $1599 is your best buy, providing excellent firm, contouring support that maintains proper spinal alignment and greatly reduces motion transfer. A Latex for Less 2" Organic Latex Topper runs only $259. Together, they’ll provide you many years of supportive, comfortable sleep. We recommend using a waterproof mattress protector. Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will add to the longevity. Rotate your new mattress once a month for the first year and once every 3 months thereafter to ensure even wear, which enhances the comfort life of any mattress. The KLUFT Mattresses over $10k…are they really worth the price? Specifically this one: https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/kluft-signature-rose-ultra-plush-mattress-collection-100-exclusive?ID=5109593&CategoryID=3865 Still searching for a great mattress... Thanks, Natalie Hi Natalie, A mattress is a utilitarian product, specifically designed to provide you with a good night’s sleep….not that most of today’s mattresses do that for as long as they once did. But still, no one needs to spend that kind of money to get a mattress that does give you a quality night’s sleep & the longevity you’d expect. Thanks, Pete ************* Pete, I agree. What would you recommend, from your selection, that is a luxury firm top of the line made with the best of the best materials and won't sag on me in two years time? Natalie Natalie, a mattress is made of pressure sensitive materials. How well it wears over time, depends on the quality of the materials used and the pressure being exerted upon it. “Top of the line” mattresses were never a good value, as they have too much upholstery, which is more easily compressed. Top line mattresses are often sold as a luxury product. And while you do need enough upholstery to provide comfort, indulging in the industry’s attempts to sell you a utilitarian product as a luxury item always results in a shorter lifespan. Before recommending an appropriate mattress, I have some questions. What are the sizes, (heights and weights), of the people using the mattress? What are the ages of the people? What physical ailments are there to address, if any? What are you sleeping on now? What’s wrong with it? Pete ************* Pete, Our sizes: 5'9 - 150 lbs 5'6 - 130 lbs Out ages: Both 44 Physical ailments: No physical ailments but my husband often complains of shoulder and back pain after sleeping on our mattress: BISCAYNE BEDDING TAVERNIER 14" PLUSH MATTRESS My husband says it’s awful. It dips and sags and is not firm enough. He wakes up aches and pains, and he sleeps hot. He doesn’t like it Natalie Natalie, I don’t blame him. What’s wrong with your mattress is what’s wrong with most mattresses being made these days…the memory foam. While promoted as the best thing since sliced bread, it’s actually the worst upholstery material ever invented…specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. Memory foam is the only temperature sensitive upholstery material. It softens as it warms from the heat your bodies give off, causing you to sink into it. At first, it’s fairly comfortable. But, it’s not very resistant. After only a short time, you’re sinking much to far, throwing off the natural alignment of your body and spine…causing pain. The other side effects are: sleeping hot and creating the inability to change position without half waking up to do it. Some of the memory foam is cured or plant based, but most is chemical based and not cured, which results in toxic chemical off gassing evidenced by an unpleasant odor…especially when new. Your ages and sizes mitigate in your favor. My recommendation is for a mattress using an individually pocketed coil system. These coils are the body’s support…providing an upward, independent suspension type of support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. Pure, hypoallergenic and organic latex (not made in China) is and has been the best upholstery material for more than 100 years. The mattress I’m recommending for you is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss, which you can access through this link: Hybrid Latex Mattress - The Luxury Bliss plushbeds.com If you have an old boxspring, that will need to be replaced. If it’s reasonably new, or if you have a platform bed, you won’t. If you do, here’s a link to an excellent choice: Foundations and Adjustable Bases themattressexpert.com It’s important to keep a mattress clean and dry, which enhances longevity. This link will get you to our most popular waterproof mattress protector. Sleep and Beyond Protectors and Encasements themattressexpert.com While the recommended mattress provides all the support and comfort you’ll need to get a good night’s sleep, and for many years, should you wish to indulge your sense of luxury, if you have one, then add a removable mattress topper, which can easily be replaced over the years without having to buy a new mattress. I recommend waiting until you’ve slept on your new mattress before deciding if you even want to add a topper. I’ve been through 4 mattresses in as many years, which is what sent me to the internet to research what’s going wrong…which is where I found you. Based on some of the things I read on your blog, I’m now wondering if I really do need to buy a new mattress. Your blog suggests that it’s the memory foam in these mattresses that is causing them to wear out so quickly. Your blog explains that the memory foam is only on the top and that if I flip the mattress over and add a non-memory foam topper that I can get away with not having to replace this mattress. Does that really work? If so, which topper? Thanks, Lydia Hi Lydia, Yes. It works. Many of the people who write to me have problems with memory foam. Not only does it wear quickly, it sleeps hot and allows you to sink, which causes back pain and numbness in the arms, legs, hands & feet. Flipping the mattress over eliminates all of those problems. The topper serves to provide the surface comfort you need to sleep deeply. Which topper is a question of satisfying your personal needs. First thing to do is to flip your mattress over and try it for comfort. You should immediately feel an improvement in the way it supports. If you feel that it needs to feel much softer, the Suite Sleep 3” Pure Vita Talalay Latex Mattress Topper is your best option. If you only need a little extra softness, the one of our other toppers will address various other needs. For instance, the Magniflex MagniCool 3D topper will allow someone who naturally sleeps hot, to sleep much cooler. The Sleep & Beyond toppers are an excellent value. None of our latex products come from China, where fillers are used to reduce the cost of pure latex. A short lifespan goes along with Chinese made latex, making it a poor value. Our focus has always been about quality and the longevity that quality provides. Here is a link to our Mattress Toppers page. We currently have and need to replace a Stearns and Foster Blisswood Mattress, bought from you back in 2012. And we have one of your Plush Latex Topper Mattress Topper - 2" Talalay 100% Natural (purchased in 2013). My husband is over 300 pounds and now says that the mattress makes his back hurt. I am 200 pounds and have a herniated disc in lower back and bursitis in my hips. I used to sleep well on this set-up but now pain in my hips wakes me up at night. My questions are: Do we need a new mattress or a new topper? Dunlop latex instead of Talalay? Thicker latex? Thanks for your help, Wendy Hi Wendy, Given your sizes, you got quite a lot of years out of that sleep system. However, it may very well be that you don't need anything, as yet. There is a trick that often works, which may put off the need for a new mattress for a number of years. Remove your topper...flip your mattress...flip and reapply your topper. The underside of the mattress is firmer...and flipping it may be all you need to do. Try it that way for the next couple of nights, and let me know how you're doing. If you do, in fact, need a sleep system, I suggest the Natura of Canada Greenspring in Luxury Firm. And a Sleep and Beyond Latex Topper to go along with it. I need a mattress for large man with spinal fusions and herniated discs. The mattresses I've been buying only make my back pain worse. Thanks, Dwight Hi Dwight, With your back and spine being what it is, it will be important for the support to be right and durable enough as to not change anytime soon, as your back will be much more sensitive to changes than for people with a sound back. That which changes first, in a mattress, are the upholstery layers. It will be extremely important for you to avoid any mattress upholstered with memory foam, which changes quickly. Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever invented…specially designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. It has proven to make any back problems worse, despite the sales hype to the contrary. The mattress needs to be somewhat unyielding and somewhat flexible at the same time. It’s a fine line to walk, achieving that right balance. For that reason, I’m recommending the Natura of Canada Greenspring Firm. Shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ While this mattress does provide the support you need, long term, it’s generally too firm to sleep on comfortably. You’ll need to add a mattress topper for surface comfort. Adding a separate mattress topper allows you to replace it as needed without having to replace the entire mattress. The upholstery material that is most resilient is natural latex foam rubber. Latex foam changes very little over a fairly long period of time. The one I recommend for your needs is the Sleep & Beyond Wooly Latex Topper. shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/latex_toppers.html#/ This sleep system combination will provide many years of proper spinal support and comfort that isn't too soft. The mattress comes with white glove delivery. The topper ships via FedEx. There are no delivery charges Thanks, Pete A waterproof mattress protector will extend the life of any mattress, keeping it clean and dry. https://www.themattressexpert.com/store/p169/Organic_Cotton_Waterproof_Mattress_Protector.html#/ Website: https://themattressexpert.com/ Email: pete.themattressexpert@gmail.com Voicemail: 856-874-6894 Follow us on Facebook |
