I was so happy to come across your website while searching for information. I used to have an amazing mattress. It was the Simmons Beautyrest Anniversary pillowtop model from 2011. I had it for 10 years and thought it might be time to replace it this summer. I had worked for the 4 Seasons Hotel in 2015 and slept in employee housing and liked their mattress and ordered one but it wasn't amazing support (only decent) and it heated up like crazy (memory foam). (It was made by Simmons, but I think it has changed since I used to work there) I tried the Stearns and Foster (Estate, medium firmness, I think) and I absolutely loved the feel of the support underneath but also was way too hot at night (memory foam) and would sink down and I would have to move to a new area every few hours to be cool and comfortable again. The way you described the memory foam heating up and also cradling your body (in non-supportive ways) due to it reacting and holding the body heat, was right on. I super wish Stearns and Foster made the supportive coils with a different top section (not memory foam) I contacted a stearns and foster rep and they said all their beds have memory foam. Next, I tried all natural talalay latex from the Oregon Mattress Company and at least it sleeps cooler but not super cool and the pillow top model I got is soft... and nice.. but just not quite right. I feel achy and too warm. I realize this is getting ridiculous and I wish it weren't so difficult to find a comfortable bed for me. I finally am sleeping on "Purple" their original with a polyester filled topper (because Purple is pretty firm but sleeps cooler). I sleep ok right now (decent support, decent temperature: not waking up achy and not waking up too hot) but I dream about the bed I used to have that I LOVED sleeping in and would wake up feeling so refreshed. I don't look forward to sleeping or going to bed anymore. I just do because I need to. Are you at all familiar with what the Simmons Beautyrest Anniversary model had in it and could you recommend something similar? If not, could you recommend something for my situation? I tend to prefer coils instead of all foam. I did really like the supportive feeling underneath my Simmons Beautyrest. Thank you for your time and advice. I am looking forward to hearing from you. I am desperately in need of a new queen size mattress. I currently have a sleep number bed that really doesn’t work well. When I traveled extensively and I fell in love with the Marriott Hotel Dream Bed. They told me at the hotel it was a Simmons Beautyrest World Class Bouvet Island Plush. I have held onto this information for years, because I have literally dreamed of finding a comfortable bed. I am a 5’7” 53 year old woman, who is fit and weighs 145 lbs. I have a shoulder issue that causes it to be very hard to get a good night’s rest I am hoping with surgical correction in Dec that will resolve itself. That being said I need to find a new mattress. I saw that you had responded to another inquiry from someone who loved a hotel mattress as well. Can you provide me with the following? (1) A mattress recommendation (2) Do you have a store I can visit to try out the recommended mattress (I live in NJ) (3) If not do you have another store you can recommend who carries this mattress you are recommending? Simmons no longer makes the World Class Series of mattresses. Since being sold to an investment group, they no longer make a mattress without memory foam upholstery. Does anyone make an old fashioned two sided mattress? I bought a two sided mattress from Serta, but it didn't hold up. Before long, my back started hurting and it smelled bad. Also, it sleeps hot. While they did a good job of creating the illusion, there was NOTHING old fashioned about it. What went wrong? Is there anything better? They are the same company now, after having been sold to the same investment group. An old fashioned mattress, made between 1970 to 2010, would have been upholstered with poly foam. They wore well, didn't sleep hot and didn't off gas. Wolf makes an old fashioned quality mattress, but not two sided, using an individually pocketed coil unit, which maintains proper spinal alignment. The upholstery is Certi-Pur Certified, mostly poly foam. It wears well, does not sleep hot and there's NO Off Gassing. Out of everything I’ve read, you seem to be the most knowledgeable. So, I’m in desperate need of your help and a good night’s sleep. There’s no shortage of salespeople who will tell you that this or that works. Nothing they’ve recommended has worked for very long. I’m a plus size gal, suffering from severe fibromyalgia. Soft enough for my fibro causes back pain. Firm enough for my back causes my fibro to flare. I can’t seem to find the right balance. Please, help me if you can. Thanks, Linda Hi Linda, The key word you used, is “Balance”. All things in life are better when balanced. You will never find one product that will provide your body with everything it needs. You need enough firmness of support to maintain proper spinal alignment to keep your back from hurting. You then need enough surface comfort to relieve your fibromyalgia pain. While many products provide softness, not many wear well. My recommendation to you will come in two, perhaps 3, parts. First, a mattress that provides firm, but not stiff support. The contouring support of an individually pocket coil mattress does this better than any other type of mattress. Second, a soft mattress topper that lasts. Of these, soft organic latex is the most resilient, providing long term surface comfort. This third product is specifically for those suffering with severe fibromyalgia. A synthetic down, aka alternative down topper. This product provides extraordinary surface softness. It’s nowhere near as durable as latex, but much longer lasting than real down. This top layer will likely need yearly replacing. The latex topper does a couple of things. It provides a long term, softer base support for the alternative down topper, which by itself won’t be soft enough on a reasonably firm mattress. It also preserves the integrity of the mattress under a plus size person, so that the mattress won’t need replacing anytime soon. The soft latex topper doesn’t allow you to sink, but is soft enough to relieve fibro pain for most who suffer with that condition. The added alternative down topper is for severe cases. I just bought a queen-size Serta Perfect Sleeper Pillowtop mattress. After just 4 nights i already see body impressions where we sleep. Neither of us is particularly heavy, either. Is this because of the pillowtop or because the mattress is poor quality? I bought it because i thought the high coil density and decent coil gauge would give good support, and i chose the pillowtop for a bit of softness with that support. I have 60 days to return it. Should i? if i did return it, what would you recommend for two (mostly) side sleepers of average weight who like a supportive mattress with a little softness to sink into? Put a pillowtop on Serta Perfect Sleeper, or any name brand mattress, which are all upholstered with memory foam, and what you're experiencing is the norm. Yes, you should return it. If your store doesn’t have a mattress without memory foam, get a refund if you can. Another problem with retail stores is the comfort guarantee they offer that the manufacturer doesn’t. You may have gotten someone else’s mattress that was returned, which they resell as new…a despicable practice that’s totally illegal, but happens much too frequently…there’s no one policing this industry. I’m inquiring about adjustable bed bases for mattresses. My wife seems to think that we should get one. How necessary are they? What are the benefits? Is there a downside? Is one better than another? Which one do you recommend? Thanks, Barry Hi Barry, My views about this is quite different from those of the average salesperson. Most salespeople are less concerned about whether or not it’s the right fit for their customers and more concerned about the extra commission it generates. Those who benefit most from having an adjustable bed base are those who spend time hanging out in their bedroom. Watching TV, reading, working/playing on a laptop are the best reasons. If your reason for going to bed, is to sleep, it’s a waste of your money. For sleeping, it’s important to maintain the natural alignment of your spine. So if you have an adjustable bed, it’s best to lay it flat for sleeping. The advantages are obvious for those who like to spend time in their bedroom for purposes other than sleeping. The disadvantage is far less obvious, becoming so after the passing of time. When you raise the head and foot, the majority of your body weight shifts from being evenly distributed across the surface of the mattress to a single point just under your butt. Consequently, the mattress wears more quickly at the spot. This can create a misalignment of your body and spine when sleeping flat. And while back sleepers may find comfort sleeping with the head raised, comfort is much more difficult for side sleepers and impossible for stomach sleepers with the bed in any other position than flat. In terms of quality, I see little to no difference between one brand and another. The differences are more about features and aesthetics. We carry only one brand, Magniflex, for which there are two models. This brand was chosen for its value…not as expensive as most, and very well made. Thanks, Angela Hi Angela, The answer to that is a rather long, personal history story. I’ll try not to be too long winded about it. My Grandfather, an Italian immigrant from a wealthy family, instilled in me the notion that quality was most important. “Solo il meglio”, he used to say. Translation…Only the best. His son, my father, was a man with 2 engineering degrees. It was said about him and his engineer friends, that they could squeeze the buffalo off a nickel. His philosophy was to buy products that were the best value for the dollar…and not necessarily the most expensive. Over my years in business, I’ve routinely chosen not to offer everything our vendors make when they don’t meet my standards for quality and/or value. That said, PlushBeds has 2 mattresses more expensive than the one I’ve chosen. One is a pillowtop. With the edge of any pillowtop not securely attached to the edge of the mattress, it pulls inward when a body is lying on it. As a consequence of this, pillowtop mattresses tend to develop body impressions more quickly and more deeply than a ‘tight top’ mattress. If the extra luxury that a pillowtop mattress is what you desire, then it’s better to add a soft mattress topper…a removable pillowtop. Doing this allows you to replace the pillowtop in the coming years for far less cost than having to replace the entire mattress. As an added benefit, the topper does much of the work of absorbing your body weight. This results is preserving the mattress, adding to its longevity. Certainly, the value of this ‘sleep system’ approach is obvious.
