My wife and I use one at home and couldn’t imagine sleeping without it. Latex wears differently than other types of foams. It actually gets firmer with age. Before buying a new topper, flip yours over. You may be able to get more years out of it by doing so. Hi Pete, I contacted you many years ago. I had a mattress that was too firm and was looking for a more comfortable mattress. You talked me into making that mattress more comfortable by adding a soft latex mattress topper, instead of buying another new mattress. I ended up with 3” Talalay Latex. I can’t thank you enough for steering me right. Here it is, 10 years later, and I’m back to get a new latex topper. Not only did the topper make my too firm mattress comfortable, but that mattress is still like new…just what you said would happen. I’ve actually needed a new topper since late last year. I shopped your website, but then found what seemed to be the same thing online for half the price. So, I’m sorry to say I bought it. Here it is, barely 6 months later, and it has deep body impressions and it’s not as comfortable as it was at first. The one I bought for you remained comfortable for many years. The Talalay is slightly softer than the Dunlop. What went wrong with that last one?…Latex made in China. China processes latex with clay as a filler. Clay is a natural substance, so they’re sold an all natural, even organic latex. The clay makes it a lot cheaper to produce and why it was such a short time. We were told that this mattress would relieve my sciatica problem. At first, it did that. But now, only 3 months later, my sciatica pain has returned and is worse than before. I contacted the store and they sent someone to inspect the mattress. I was told that there's nothing wrong with it, and it's too late to return it. I'm average size, but my husband is 235 lbs. I'm confused. This mattress was expensive. What do I do now? Thanks, Marie Hi Marie, The problem with that mattress is the memory foam upholstery. It softens as it warms form your body heat, allowing you to sink. At first, you sink only a little. But memory foam is not very resilient. It only takes a couple/few months before you begin to sink too far, which throws off the natural alignment of your spine. It's in maintaining that alignment that relieves pain from sciatica and other disc related back problems. There is a way to address your problem without having to buy a new mattress. The problem material, the memory foam, is only on the top of the mattress. It's the individually pocketed coils that are of value to you, which you can access by flipping your mattress. Despite being a one sided mattress, flipping it will bring the coils close to your body and take the memory foam out of the equation. It is likely to be too firm to sleep on comfortably, so add what you have to soften the surface, like a comforter. If you find your sciatica is relieved, then you've saved your purchase of that mattress. All you'll need is a mattress topper to make your comfort permanent. I am 76 yrs. old and have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoporosis. I also have severe scoliosis. Due to several episodes of blood clots, I have been on permanent Coumadin for 24 years and also have a blood filter implanted in the artery below my heart. In 2006 I bought a Sealy Jacaranda Queen mattress and adjustable queen base/platform with motor. For the last several years I have been suffering from back, hip, knee and shoulder pain. At times I suffer from a pinched nerve in my back. All the doctors want to operate on my back, but with me on Coumadin and at my age, I feel the risks outweigh the benefits. I have found a chiropractor who is really helping my back and hips with stretching maneuvers. Last week I almost bought a Simmons Beautyrest mattress to go on the base I already own. I have since read bad reviews on that mattress and am glad I didn't buy it. I have been told that I need a firm mattress because of my back, but need a soft mattress for my shoulders and hips. I am confused. Also, I'm not a millionaire and can't afford a mattress that costs thousands of dollars. To add to all of the above, my son thinks my back problems worsened when I got the adjustable bed. Do you have an opinion regarding this, as well? I need your help and advice. Thank you, Betty Hi Betty, An adjustable bed base is fine for sitting up to watch TV, but for sleeping, the bed needs to be flat in order to maintain your spine's natural alignment. It should be flat when you're sleeping. The Sealy Jacaranda latex mattress was quite firm and should be ok for your back...but it's too firm for your other issues.
