Hi Pete,
I am a 67 year old fireman. I’m 6’ 3” and weigh 280 lbs. I had a back injury in the past, with pain that is now getting worse with age. Which line of extra firm inner coil mattresses would you recommend? I have had an extra firm Simmons Beautyrest World Class mattress and boxspring for the past 15 years that has done me well, but is now sagging and needs to be replaced. Please give me your recommendations. Thanks, Rick Hi Rick, Simmons was sold in 2016. Nothing they make today will last very long, even under average body weight, due to them switching to memory foam. There’s only one mattress that I could find while shopping at the industry trade shows that will be firm enough and last long enough under a man your size that’s worth buying. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress in Firm. This mattress has the same coil system as your Simmons Beautyrest, but with a higher coil count and stronger, double tempered steel coils. The upholstery is more durable, as well…Natural Talalay Latex. Their firm model will be as firm or firmer that others labeled “extra firm”. You will also need to replace your boxspring. Here are links to that mattress and the foundation I’m recommending: Natura of Canada Greenspring Firm Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-firm/81?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true The Magniflex Upholstered KD Foundation https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/magniflex-kd-foundation-w-out-legs/2?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. Hi Pete,
We recently received a Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress in Plush. Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ You had recommended the Ultra Plush for us and that’s the mattress my wife wanted to order. I decided on the Plush model because Ultra Plush sounded like it would be too soft, even though you had assured us that it wouldn’t be. So, here I am, with an unhappy wife who is blaming me. I will say that our back pains have gone away, just as you said they would. But, we would like the mattress to be more comfortable. Which latex topper do we need to make my wife happy? She’s a side sleeper with a sore hip…and she’s sore at me! I regret not going with your original recommendation. Thanks, Alan Hi Alan, Let me recommend to you the same latex topper that we use at home. My wife is also a side sleeper with a sensitive hip. The Suite Sleep 3” Soft Pure Vita Talalay Latex Topper is the softest available. Again, it won’t be too soft. You won’t have to worry about sinking in. Pure latex doesn’t all that. You’ll feel like you’re floating. And once again, you’ll have a happy wife & happy life. Click on this link to view and place your order. I have been reading your comments about mattresses and am impressed by your knowledge. My husband and I, too, had slept on a Beautyrest Recharge Hospitality at a resort and fell in love with it. I figured it was only made for commercial use under that name and was looking to see if they made it for residential use under another name. We have not been happy with memory foam mattresses and would like to find one like the one you describe in the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra plush. We like a firm mattress but also one you don’t sink down into and have to climb up to turn over. What is the price of your King Size Mattress. We live in East Tennessee, are in our 70s and this will probably be the last mattress we purchase. Thank you, Debra Hi Debra, The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress is just as you described wanting, using the same support system as was used in that Simmons Beautyrest Mattress you liked so much. Unfortunately, you can’t buy a Beautyrest mattress without memory foam upholstery today. That hospitality model has been discontinued. The natural latex upholstery in that Natura Greenspring won’t allow you to sink. It feels like you’re floating. My wife and I have that mattress. Ours is more than 10 years old and still in great condition, even with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. It will, indeed, be the last mattress you will need to buy. Here’s the link, showing specifications and pricing. I’ve been stung by the name brands that promise comfort and pain relief. All seemed fine, at first. All have failed within a few months to a year. I’ve recently read a lot of your blog posts and have visited your website. My head hurts from thinking about mattresses so much, for so long! So, let’s cut right to the chase. Which mattress is the best from you, TME, The Mattress Expert? Thanks, Miguel Hi Miguel, It’s the memory foam now used by all the name brands that has caused all of your previous purchases to go bad so quickly. Memory foam is specifically designed to do that, along with sleeping hot, off gassing the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made, and the sinking in that causes back pain to get worse. We sell no mattresses that use memory foam, for all of those reasons. All of our mattresses are upholstered with Latex foam, (none from China). Latex is and has been the highest quality upholstery material for more than a century….Natural and Hypoallergenic. Our recommendations are, to some degree, based on body weight. Our very best it recommended for our heavier customers. Some have exceeded 500 lbs. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses are our best…the best we could find while shopping at the industry trade shows. My wife and I are heavy, with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. We decided to try their Ultra Plush model, since we aren’t excessively heavy. We’ve had that mattress for more than 10 years and it’s still in great shape. Our daughter and son-in-law are well in excess of 300 lbs. They have the Plush model. We all have bad backs and we all sleep and wake without back pain. Here’s a link to the Natura of Canada Greenspring line of mattresses: Click on each of their 4 choices of comfort to view specifications & pricing: Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ These mattresses come with White Glove Delivery…including setup in your bedroom and bedroom and removal of all packaging materials. However, having been raised by a man with 2 engineering degrees, I don’t believe in spending more than is necessary to get the job done. Which is why I don’t recommend the Natura mattresses for light to average size people. They are more mattress than you need and cost more than you need to spend. For light to average size people, we have a couple of excellent options. Both cost noticeably less than the Natura mattresses. Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT This mattress also comes with White Glove Delivery, but also includes Removal of your old mattress. And, for those who won’t buy a mattress without a comfort guarantee: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 These mattresses are available in Medium or Medium Firm comfort choices These mattresses comes with a 100 Night Trial. Delivery, however, is UPS to your front door. *** Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. I need a mattress to relieve my sciatica pain. I bought a memory foam mattress after the salesman at the store promised me that it would take care of it. The only thing it took care of, was making it worse. I found your blog, after doing some research, that offered a lot of helpful advice. I flipped this mattress over, as I read that you had suggested. It helps, but not completely. So I don’t think adding a topper is the right choice? I like a firmer feel, being a large man, so I was thinking that the Natura of Canada Greenspring Luxury Firm Mattress would be a good fit, based on what I’ve been reading. Please let me know if you think so too. I’d like to get this order In ASAP. Thanks, Larry Hi Larry, You’re correct about everything. A topper is for surface comfort, not support. The support you’re not getting from your memory foam mattress won’t change by adding a topper. The Natura of Canada Greenspring is what we recommend for large people. It’s incredibly durable, an ideal choice for long term use by my heavier customers, who have been as heavy as 500 lbs. My wife and I have been sleeping on their Ultra Plush model for more than a decade. It’s still in great condition, despite each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. Your sciatica is a result of a pinched nerve in the small of your back, due to wore or herniated disc(s) in that area. The individually pocketed coils of the Natura Greenspring are designed to maintain your spine’s natural alignment, which will relieve that pinched nerve. I, too, have a very bad back…herniated & bulging discs, along with degenerative disc disease. Yet this mattress has allowed me to sleep and wake without back pain for the 10+ years I’ve been sleeping on it. All of my customers experience the same relief from their chronic back pain. There are 4 choices of comfort and all of them are firmer than they sound. The Natural Latex upholstery wears extremely well…head & shoulders above memory foam. The Luxury Firm is an excellent choice. No Sinking In No Off Gassing No Sleeping Hot. Here’s a link to the Natura of Canada Greenspring line of mattresses. A friend suggested I contact you. She and her husband are long time customers of yours and told me that you are their go-to guy when it comes to mattresses. We are on the heavy side with almost constant back pain. So, I figured I’d ask straight out, “What mattress does the expert sleep on?”. Might as well start there. Thanks, Viola Hi Viola, Thank your friend for me. After all the name brands were sold and switched to memory foam, we went shopping at the industry trade shows for higher quality alternatives. We found a few. But, the best we found were The Natura of Canada Greenspring. These are, by far, the highest quality mattresses on the market. My wife and I are also on the heavy side, over 200 lbs. each. And I have a very bad back…herniated & bulging discs, and DDD. We opted for the Greenspring Ultra Plush, (not as soft as it sounds). The very high coil count, individually pocketed coils, and natural latex upholstery, have allowed us to sleep and wake pain free for more than a decade. Our mattress is, still, in great condition…with no signs of needing replacing. There are 4 choices of comfort in the Natura Greenspring line of mattresses. All are a bit firmer than other mattresses with the same comfort designations, due to the extremely high quality of the components. You can expect the best in support and longevity with varying degrees of comfort. You can, also, expect to find your chronic back pain relieved. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses are “The Best of the Best”. Click on this link to view that line of mattresses. Click on each model to view specifications and prices. I am desperate to buy mattresses for my new home, king, queen and twin. The only mattress I've slept on and loved for 25 yrs is the Sealy Posturepe Montoire. What is a good replacement??? The Saatva looks great, but almost $3k for a king is a bit pricy. There is always Costco's Sealy inner spring plush... but the reviews are so mixed I'm scared to go there. What do you recommend? Thanks, Betsy Hi Betsy, Nothing is made like your old Sealy. All of the name brands have been sold. Sealy and S&F in 2013…Simmons and Serta in 2016. All of them are now using memory foam…not used in your 25 y/o Sealy. Memory foam is specifically designed to wear much more quickly and mattresses made with it to need much more frequent replacing. And if that’s not bad enough, it consists of 61 different chemicals. They don’t bother to cure the foam, like they did the poly foam in your old Sealy, so those toxic chemicals off gas in your bedroom. Memory foam is the only temperature sensitive upholstery material. It softens as it warms from your body’s heat, reflects that heat back to you, and allows the heavier parts of your body you to sink into it, which causes back pain and numbness of the extremities. The mattress my wife and I have at home is more than 10 years old and still like new, despite each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. What’s more, I sleep and wake without pain, despite having a very bad back. I would recommend Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush for your king. It’s the highest quality mattress that I’ve been able to find while shopping at the industry trade shows. Due to the high quality of the components, it’s not as soft as it sounds. Shown here: Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-ultra-plush/92?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true You can’t go wrong with that mattress for all 3, I suspect that you won’t need that high of quality for the other two. Similarly made, but with a lower coil count, is the Williams Kingston Plush is an excellent choice for the other two…or even your king if you’re carrying average body weight. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT You can save even more if twin is for a child. The Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress is ideal for any child. Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale Needless to say, none of these mattresses have any memory foam in them. We sell no mattresses with memory foam. All of these mattresses use an individually pocketed coil system, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. All are upholstered with Latex, which has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years…longest lasting and most comfortable, creating the unique feeling that you’re floating. If you need a new boxspring for any of these mattresses, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. I'm a petite female with wide hips, shopping for new mattress. Current one is Sealy that is only a few yrs old. But lately, I have been having pain in both hips when I sleep on my side(s). This causes me to awake and flip to other side. Additionally, my back is sore every morning. Any ideas on what I should shop for? Thanks, Madge Hi Madge, There’s, “What to shop For”, and what to Avoid. What you have and all of the other “Name Brands” have been sold to other companies that have been using memory foam to upholster their mattresses. But, it’s not only them. Many mattress manufacturers are using memory foam. It’s the memory foam that you need to avoid. Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body’s heat. This softening are allowing your body to sink and it’s this sinking-in, that is causing your problems. Other common problems associated with memory foam are: Sleeping Hot Off Gassing of the toxic chemicals that are used to make the most commonly used memory foam, which results in respiratory issues. (What to shop for) A mattress with individually pocketed coils and latex upholstery. The coils provide pushback support while each moving independently from one another. This type of support maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. Pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex provides unparalleled comfort that feels like you’re floating, and does so over many years. Our 2 most popular brands of mattresses are: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress, available in 2 choices of comfort. These are the mattresses we recommend for average weight people. Medium for those on the lighter side of average to average. Medium Firm for those on the heavier side of average. Medium Firm for anyone on either side of average, who also have pre-existing back pain. I’m replacing a very old mattress set. It’s about 30 years old. My husband is a big man, approx. 250 lbs. When he gets up, the whole bed shakes. I want a mattress where that won’t happen. And, it has to be strong enough to hold up over the years under his weight. Thanks, Linzy Hi Linzy, Here are the links to the items I’m recommending. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress The individually pocketed coils will provide you with the motion transfer reduction that you’re looking for. The Natura Greenspring Mattresses are the highest quality that I could find, while shopping at the industry trade shows. I weighed 275 at the time. I’m not as heavy now, more than 10 years later. The mattress is still in great shape. The components are extremely strong…highest coil count and high density upholstery, which includes 3” of latex. Because of all this, it’s not as soft as it sounds. This is the only mattress that we carry that comes fully formed, delivered in a delivery truck with two men….as opposed to shrink wrapped rolled and boxed for ups delivery. Due to that, it has excellent edge support. Shown here: Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-ultra-plush/92?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true You can’t use your old boxspring. Doing so would void the warranty of any new mattress that you put on it. Here’s a link to the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. After doing research on the internet, I found your website. It appears that you are very knowledgeable. I was hoping you could help me. I am looking to purchase a new mattress for my 6,4, 275 lb son who is only 15 years old. He plays football, wears a size 16 shoe, and I am certain he is not through growing. He gets hot really easy. The options for mattresses are overwhelming. Any advice you have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lynn Hi Lynn, The mattress industry has changed quite a bit over the past 25 years. And at an accelerated rate over the past 10 years…and not for the better. There are very few mattresses out there that will do the job, long term. My highest recommendation for quality, support and longevity is: The Natura of Canada Greenspring Firm Mattress. Shown Here: Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ And while this mattress is the best you can buy for long term use, it’s really quite firm and not very comfortable. Add to that, a Latex for Less Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper. Ideally, for his size, a 2” or 3” Medium. Shown Here: Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper | Latex For Less Together, they will provide excellent support, comfort and durability…lasting for many years to come. ********** You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation.
