Hi Pete, My boyfriend and I purchased a Stearns and Foster pillowtop mattress about 3 weeks ago. The bed is at my house and he generally only stays over on weekends. Im heavier, about 275 pounds. The side of the mattress that I sleep on already feels much, much squishier than the side that doesnt get slept on as often, the other side still feels nice and firm. The pillowtop part is only part of the problem you’re experiencing. The memory foam upholstery is another reason why your side is sinking in. Even if you exchange it for another S&F mattress without a pillowtop, you’ll be back in the same situation within months. If the store you’re dealing with has mattresses that don’t have any memory foam in them, those would be the ones to consider. We purchased a Stearns and Foster Blisswood Luxury Firm Mattress from you, back in 2012, with one of your Latex Toppers - 2" Soft. My husband is over 300 pounds and now says that the mattress makes his back hurt. I am 200 pounds and have a herniated disc in lower back and bursitis in my hips. The year after you bought that mattress, Tempur-Pedic bought S&F. Everything S&F makes today has memory foam upholstery. Nothing they make lasts very long because of it. Yours has no memory foam in it, which is why it’s lasted for so long. I’ve been following your blog for years, now. It’s very interesting. I’ve read, quite often, about your opposition to memory foam. A couple of months ago, I went to a local mattress store. I told the salesman about you and what you have to say about memory foam. He told me that you, either, don’t know what you’re talking about or just trying to sell what you have. He then went into great detail about why memory foam is the latest, greatest mattress padding on the market. He was rather convincing. My wife insisted that we buy it. They turned into nothing more than expensive junk, literally over night. Getting a refund isn’t likely, without some degree of coercion. You might try reversing the charge through the finance company. Your local news agencies often have a consumer advocacy department. Getting in touch with your state’s department of consumer affairs may help. If all else fails, a lawyer. Is you find yourself stuck with that mattress, there is a long term fix. The memory foam on top of the mattress is where the problem lies. Promoted as high quality, memory foam is actually the worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s a low resiliency, temperature sensitive material that reacts to your body heat. (Which didn’t have a chance to happen while trying it in the store.) As it warms, it softens, allowing your body to sink so far, as to throw off body’s natural alignment. The heavier parts of the body sink the furthest, which leaves your arms and legs higher. Blood circulation to those areas is reduced, causing numbness in the extremities. And, as if all that weren’t bad enough, it reflects your body heat back to you, causing you to sleep hot. And to add insult to injury, memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. Several of the chemicals they use are carcinogenic… 61 chemicals, in all. The Fix: For a new mattress: Simply add a non-memory foam mattress topper to the surface. I need a mattress that can hold a 200 lb. woman with fibromyalgia. But, it also needs to be long lasting to replace a 16 year old pillow top double sided Stearns & Foster mattress. After much research, I've decided the Natura Greenspring Mattress. We're coming from a very old "luxury firm" Stearns & Foster, and it sounds like this is a best option to replace this discontinued mattress.
