Good morning! We're looking for a mattress set for extra large people. I'm 6' 230 lbs. and my husband is 6'8" 400 lbs. I know, WAY outside of the bell curve, right? ANYWAY... I herniated 2 discs in my back in labor with my first child, so I have a tendency towards back issues. The last 3 mattresses we bought wore out quickly and caused my back to hurt more, even though the salesman said they wouldn’t do either of those things. What do you suggest that will help us, please? What is the best mattress for a 300+ Lb. man? My last 3 mattresses failed within 6 months. I can’t afford to buy a new mattress that frequently. Most of today’s mattresses, including all of the name brands that you could once trust for quality, are upholstered with memory foam. Memory foam is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…even at average body weight. Your best course of action is to buy a strong, firm mattress (without any memory foam in it) that will hold up under your weight and make that mattress more comfortable by adding a soft latex topper. I've been reading some of your blogs and am very impressed with your straightforward advice. I too prefer a very firm mattress without all the soft foam and pillow top fluff, and couldn't agree more about your advice to tone down a firm mattress with a topper if you feel the need to do so. The only other question would be weather you necessarily recommend that we order the boxspring versus just the top mattress? We currently have a Queen Stearns & Foster boxspring. It's about 10 years old, although it "looks" brand new. Some retail salespeople tell you that if you don't get the "set" and purchase only the top mattress, it will void the warranty. Is this hype or reality and perhaps more importantly does it matter in the performance and longevity of your mattress irrespective of the warranty stuff? I've actually taken the time to read some of the fine print warranty info and it looks like it would be very easy for a manufacturer to slip out of any replacement at all unless the mattress develops a crater sag the size of the grand canyon! So it seems to me that the bottom line is to just buy a good quality firm mattress that will hold up against sagging (given the state of today's crap manufacturing)--and that's where I need your good help! A new mattress will conform to those weak spots, which will cause premature wear. It is true that the warranty of your new mattress will automatically be voided, once you put it on an old boxspring. I didn’t used to have these problems. But apparently, in 2007, a federal mandate added some ridiculous requirements for flame retardant. Mattress makers who use things like foam have no choice but to comply, so they spray the mattress casing with chemical fire retardants, rather than cover the mattresses in something that doesn’t burn, like wool, which is natural but too expensive. I’m on my third mattress in two years and still looking for one that doesn’t give me a headache.
