Hi Pete,
Good morning! We're looking for a mattress set for extra large people. I'm 6' 230 lbs. and my husband is 6'8" 400 lbs. I know, WAY outside of the bell curve, right? ANYWAY... I herniated 2 discs in my back in labor with my first child, so I have a tendency towards back issues. The last 3 mattresses we bought wore out quickly and caused my back to hurt more, even though the salesman said they wouldn’t do either of those things. What do you suggest that will help us, please? Thanks, Paige Hi Paige, A body requires two things to sleep well…firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface. At your sizes, a very strong mattress is required. The strongest mattress that will last for many years under these circumstances is The Natura of Canada Greenspring in Firm. The individually pocketed coils are designed to maintain your spine’s natural alignment, which is what will relieve your back pain. This mattress comes with White Glove Delivery. Shown here: https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-firm/81?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true It’s the comfort layers of the mattress that tend to wear first. A Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Mattress Topper in Soft is the most resilient upholstery material that provides the surface comfort you’ll need to sleep deeply. A latex topper will also hold up well to a lot of weight. I recommend the Latex for Less 2” Soft. As the years go by, you’ll need to replace the topper from time to time, but not the mattress…resulting in tremendous savings. Here’s a link to those toppers: https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 We also recommend using a waterproof mattress protector. Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will also enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is the best buy and the one we use at home. Shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/sleep_and_beyond_protectors_and_encasements.html#/ And, since there is sizable difference in weight between you, you’ll need to rotate your mattress regularly from the beginning. Once a month for the first year, once every 3 months thereafter. Thanks, Pete - TME Delivery is Always Free Online Ordering is Easy & Secure. Hi Pete,
My husband and I are looking to buy a high quality Cal. King size mattress. We have gone to a local store and was informed that a Serta Pillow Top mattress for $3000 was our best bet. After reading reviews on that mattress, which weren’t good, and reading information from your blog it seems that you are more partial to a firm mattress with an added topper. What are your recommendations for the very best Cal-King non-pillowtop mattress and what kind of topper is best for a 'heavenly' feel? Thanks so much! This is a very difficult task. Sharon Hi Sharon, If you’re looking for “the best” in terms of support, comfort and longevity, I can highly recommend the sleep system that my wife and I have been sleeping on for the past 10+ years, which is still in like new condition with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. What’s more, despite my bad back from herniated discs, I’ve slept and awakened without back pain all these years. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress, (which is no where near as soft as it sounds), and a Suite Sleep Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic 3” Soft Vita Talalay Latex Topper. You’ll love going to bed and this mattress comes with White Glove Delivery. Here are links to each of those products. What is the best mattress for a 300+ Lb. man? My last 3 mattresses failed within 6 months. I can’t afford to buy a new mattress that frequently. Thanks, Alan Hi Alan, All upholstered products, like mattresses and sofas, are pressure sensitive….meaning, the more you weigh, the shorter the life span. Most of today’s mattresses, including all of the name brands that you could once trust for quality, are upholstered with memory foam. Memory foam is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…even at average body weight. Your best course of action is to buy a strong, firm mattress (without any memory foam in it) that will hold up under your weight and make that mattress more comfortable by adding a soft latex topper. Pure Latex is the most resilient upholstery material available. The latex topper will absorb much of your body’s weight, which preserves the mattress. As the years go by, you can expect to replace the topper from time to time, without having to replace the mattress for many years. My recommendation for you is the Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress in Firm…the strongest, firmest mattress available. This mattress has an extremely high coil count and latex upholstery. Shown here: https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-firm/81?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Your best buy in latest toppers comes from Latex for Less. Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Dunlop Latex. For your size, the 2” in Soft or Medium is my recommendation. Here’s the link to those: https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Also recommended, and very important, is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well. I've been reading some of your blogs and am very impressed with your straightforward advice. I too prefer a very firm mattress without all the soft foam and pillow top fluff, and couldn't agree more about your advice to tone down a firm mattress with a topper if you feel the need to do so. The only other question would be weather you necessarily recommend that we order the boxspring versus just the top mattress? We currently have a Queen Stearns & Foster boxspring. It's about 10 years old, although it "looks" brand new. Some retail salespeople tell you that if you don't get the "set" and purchase only the top mattress, it will void the warranty. Is this hype or reality and perhaps more importantly does it matter in the performance and longevity of your mattress irrespective of the warranty stuff? I've actually taken the time to read some of the fine print warranty info and it looks like it would be very easy for a manufacturer to slip out of any replacement at all unless the mattress develops a crater sag the size of the grand canyon! So it seems to me that the bottom line is to just buy a good quality firm mattress that will hold up against sagging (given the state of today's crap manufacturing)--and that's where I need your good help! All the best -Len Hi Len, Old boxsprings, not having any upholstery, often look like new even when they’re old. But, the springs directly under your body have weakened some over the years. A new mattress will conform to those weak spots, which will cause premature wear. It is true that the warranty of your new mattress will automatically be voided, once you put it on an old boxspring. Boxsprings don’t cost all that much more than the mattress, so you’d be saving little and risking much. (Penny Wise, Pound Foolish), is the old British saying for that. The best quality Firm mattress is made by Natura of Canada. Their Greenspring Firm is really quite firm…hard, really. My wife and I have had their Ultra Plush model for more than 10 years and it’s still in great condition…with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs…just to give you an example of their quality. Here’s a link to that line of mattresses, showing their 4 choices of comfort. Even their Ultra Plush model is not too soft. In fact, we added a soft latex topper to ours. https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ The best value in latex toppers comes from Latex for Less. I want a good quality mattress that lasts for many years. They seem to be impossible to find one that remains comfortable for more than a couple of years. I'm sick and tired of wasting money. Can you direct me? Thanks, Jane Hi Jane, Indeed, I can. It's all that common memory foam that's used in so many of today's mattresses that causes such a short life span. We specialize in mattresses that don't contain any of that. The mattress that my wife and I have had for many years would be my recommendation. Our mattress that is nearly a decade old and it's still in like new condition. We weigh more than 200 lbs., each. Our mattress provides excellent support, comfort and longevity. I’m very sensitive to fire-retardant and other chemical products in mattresses, like memory foam. I didn’t used to have these problems. But apparently, in 2007, a federal mandate added some ridiculous requirements for flame retardant. Mattress makers who use things like foam have no choice but to comply, so they spray the mattress casing with chemical fire retardants, rather than cover the mattresses in something that doesn’t burn, like wool, which is natural but too expensive. I’m on my third mattress in two years and still looking for one that doesn’t give me a headache. Thanks, John Hi John Your headaches are more likely due to the chemical off gassing of the memory foam. The chemical fire retardants usually affect menopausal females. Here is a link to a line of mattresses with natural latex and NO Memory Foam. These Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses use wool as a natural fire retardant. https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ Of them, the Ultra Plush model is the most comfortable...without being too soft. I recently purchased a Sealy Posturepedic Gel Series Kirkpatrick Firm Eurotop mattress. I have been experiencing frequent headaches ever since it arrived. Has anyone experienced headaches after sleeping on a gel memory foam mattress?: Thanks, Rose Hi Rose, Yes. Headache is a common negative side effect of a memory foam mattress. Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals, some of which are highly toxic....carcinogenic. It’s the off gassing of those toxic chemicals that is causing your headaches. These toxic chemical gasses attack your respiratory system. Sinus headache is the most common, but not the most serious side effect. Bleeding sinuses is among the worst I've encountered. Memory foam wears poorly, for extra measure. You would do well to rid yourself of that mattress. Replace it with a mattress that has NO Memory Foam in it. We purchased a Simmons Beautyrest mattress and foundation on 9/7/2009 for $2869. We have known we've needed to replace it for a while, but I want this exact same mattress. I have not been able to find anything like it. Do you have a recommendation? I’m still searching your site. Thanks for putting it together. Cherrie Hi Cherrie, There is no such thing as the exact same mattress available today. Simmons has been sold to investors, who are using memory foam upholstery. Your mattress has no memory foam in it, which is why you still have it. Today’s Simmons mattresses are designed to require frequent replacing. Using the same type of coil system, as Simmons, but using stronger coils and upholstered with natural Talalay Latex, is the same mattress we sleep on at home....The Natura of Canada Greenspring Shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ These mattresses will provide the same type of support as the one you have. The quality of the components exceeds the quality of the components in even your mattress, let alone, anything Simmons makes today. The Ultra Plush model is the most comfortable of the four choices, without being too soft. These mattresses come with White glove delivery. I'm a big man, 250 lbs., and on a limited budget. I see that you often recommend the Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses for people my size. https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ While they seem to be the right choice, the problem is, I can't afford them. Do you have a mattress that will hold up well under someone my weight? Thanks, Jim Hi Jim, We do carry a well made mattress that is more reasonably priced. The Wolf Tulah Luxury Plush Eurotop Mattress is your next best choice. Click on this link to view specifications and prices: https://www.themattressexpert.com/wolf_mattresses.html#/ Like the Natura of Canada Greenspring, this mattress also uses a double tempered steel coil for firm, durable support. The upholstery materials are Certi-Pur Certified Safe...No Off Gassing. While not as elaborately made and shipped via FedEx instead of white glove, this is your next best option. I’ve been studying your blog. Wonderfully informative. I have a question. What is the advantage of one sided vs. two-sided mattresses? Is a one-sided mattress designed for heavier people? Thanks again for this outstanding blog. Regards, Cliff Good Morning, Cliff. Durability is based on the quality of the components...more so than one sided or two sided. If the same mattress were available one side and two sided, then the two sided model would last longer if flipped regularly. But that isn’t the case with today's mattresses. Even the 2 sided Simmons and Serta don't wear well because of the memory foam. The highest quality components are found in the Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses. These mattresses are what I would recommend for very heavy people shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ “Heavy” is a matter of degree. The above mattresses become necessary for people who are very heavy. For those who are a little heavy the Wolf Tulah Luxury Plush Eurotop Mattress holds up well.
