That was not the answer I wanted to hear, but thank you for your help in saving my time.
Is there anything near a second best or what would you say is the best available today.
 
We have a Simmons Beautyrest in that room now, the one that they claim you can drop a bowling ball on and not spill a glass of water, LOL.
That was not why we bought it, but we did not expect the comfort level to drop as fast as it has. 
A sag developed.
It was a firm, which we really didn't want, but felt the firmer model would be stronger, so it would hold up longer....WRONG.

You have stepped out of, what can only be described as, a time warp.
 
That old S&F mattress was made at a time when manufacturers competed with one another to make a quality product. Those days no longer exists for the name brands...and haven't for quite some time.
Your old S&F mattress was one of the last great mattresses made by "The Cadillac of the Industry".
Today, S&F is nothing more than expensive junk.
 
S&F is not alone in this. 
All of the name brands have been sold...Sealy and S&F were purchased by Tempurpedic in 1013.
Simmons and Serta were bought by an investment group in 2016.
All have loaded their mattresses with memory foam.
Memory foam is used for the express purpose of causing a mattress to need frequent replacing.
Despite all the hype to the contrary, memory foam is thee worst upholstery material ever invented.
Besides being a lousy product in terms of performance, it's also a health hazard...off gassing the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made. (Adding injury to insult).
 
Your mistake is in assuming that a new S&F mattress would be as good as your old one.
We used to be a Sealy/S&F retailer...exclusively. 
We dropped both lines when Tempurpedic bought them and turned them into junk mattresses.
We spent a good amount of time and effort at the industry trade shows, looking for high quality alternatives.
Over the years, we home tested a number of different mattresses...with varying results.

The one we have now, we like very much. 
It's 9.5 years old, now, and still like new....with each of us in the 200+ lb. range.
I have lots of disc related back problems and my wife commonly suffers with hip pain.
For these last 9+ years, our pains have been relieved, thanks to this mattress....

​Hi Pete,
I am helping a friend with two herniated discs to find the best mattress to help relieve his back pain.
The herniated disc are at T5-6 and T8-9. He is 5'6' and approximately 160 lbs., (give or take). 
He has been looking into Tempurpedic beds.
What type of mattress would you recommend? A soft or hard mattress?

An all foam mattress, and memory foam in particular, will only increase his back pain.
He's being taken in by the hype surrounding that kind of mattress...and none of it is true, for long.
Memory foam is the worse type of upholstery material ever invented.

Thank you for taking my email. I am currently in the market for a new mattress.
I currently have an Eastman House Island Firm and I hate it. My back pain is strong. Hip pain too.  
I am a stomach sleeper, 38, 230lbs, currently single. 
I have previously had the Simmons Beautyrest, which was not very good. 
Recently, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in London. I had zero pain. Nothing.

Our personal situations are very similar.
I am over 200 lbs. with a very bad back, including herniated and bulging discs and degenerative disc disease.
My wife, who is equally as large, and I have had that mattress for the last 5 years.
I sleep and wake without back pain, and the mattress is still in like new condition.
So yes, this will work for you.
 
Due to the high quality and resiliency of the components, all of the mattresses in that line are firmer than they sound. So no, the ultra plush model is not too soft.
 
If you live in an urban or suburban area, Saturday delivery is probable.
The further away you live from a populated area, the less likely that becomes.
 
The foundation is available 9" or 5" high.
You'll want to measure what you have before deciding which foundation to get.
The mattress is 13.5" thick.

Hello Peter,
We were discussing buying our third mattress in the last eleven months when I found your website. 
I agree with what I've read on your website that mattresses today are junk and don't last.  
 
I injured my back when I was younger and purchased my first new mattress.
It was a Simmons Beautyrest for my wife and I when we got married in 2004.  
We loved that mattress. When it finally felt worn out, after 10 years, we purchased another one.  
That one lasted only four years before we purchased a Serta, hoping for some longevity.  
Then we had to replace it last Christmas with one that was, amazingly, worse.  
The store we bought it from gave us a new one in February that I'm having a hard time with.  
Out of desperation, we chose the memory foam option on this last one.  What a mistake.  
Thanks to you, I now know why.
 
So, what would you recommend for a 48 year old, 6' 6" tall, 290 lb. adult male and a 5' 5" 135 lb. 45 year old female to sleep comfortably like we did in 2004?

Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive.
It softens as it warms from your body heat.
It absorbs heat and reflects it back to you.
You can use an electric blanket on any mattress, except those upholstered with memory foam.

Hi Pete,
I need a new king size mattress. 
I am big man, 275 lbs., and have had several spinal fusions, and there's a titanium rod in my back.
I am side sleeper with pillow between legs (helps my back and hip pain).
I currently have a Serta pillow top mattress. It's terrible. 
I also have added 6" of memory foam that doesn't help either.

Well, you couldn't have chosen a worse mattress or topper.
Most people don't realize that the mattress industry has gone bad, by and large.
That Serta mattress has a weak coil unit and is already upholstered with memory foam. 
Adding more memory foam hasn't helped, because it's a lousy product.
Not only is memory foam a poor quality product, it's a health hazard.
It off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made.
 
We are large people, my wife and I. 
And, we suffer from many of the physical ailments that you have...and more.

Hi Pete,
My husband and I got rid of our Serta Perfect Sleeper, a few months ago, because it was killing my back.  
We are in our fifties - and I have lower back / hip pain and arthritis. We are not large people.  
I am about 125 lbs. and my husband is about 175 lbs. 
I am a side sleeper (with a pillow between my knees) and my husband is a back sleeper.  
I zeroed in on memory foam mattresses because I heard they were better for backs, and lasted longer.
As I've seen you write, they do talk about it like it was the best thing since sliced bread.
 
We are on our third memory foam mattress - and it has got to go back to the store.  
The first - a Serta iComfort Insight was way too hard - it made my shoulders hurt.  
Second, we tried the Serta iComfort Savant and my husband hated it - it was too soft.  
We are now sleeping on a Tempurpedic….and I hate it. It is too soft…and I get really overheated.  
I feel like I am sleeping on a giant hot marshmallow.  
The store keeps exchanging our mattresses but I am starting to feel like an idiot.  
The foam beds feel different in the store than they do when they have been in your home for a month.  
 
The mattress store thinks we should be the Beautyrest Black Series.  
Couple of questions - Why are there so many negative reviews about them online?  
Will it cave in after a year or two?  
Will the foam top on the Black series make me hot?  
Should I just get a high quality coil mattress (I actually sleep well in nice hotel beds)?  
What bed to you recommend?

You heard what they wanted you to hear. 
When selling memory foam, it's important to eliminate the negatives from the sales pitches.
And the negatives far outweigh the positives.
 
What few positives there are, are short lived...making memory foam a complete waste of your money.
Latex is the only thing in the mattress industry that is truly "the best thing since sliced bread" having been available for far longer than sliced bread...a well proven track record. 
 
"Comfort exchanges" arrived on the heels of the introduction of memory foam...a necessary ploy when selling pure unadulterated junk in lieu of the quality that had come before.
Everyone seems to have come to rely upon the comfort exchange. 
Where would any of you be without it, having purchased what you did?....that which was SOLD to you.
At no time during this process, does anyone connected with your sale know what they're doing.
And having the comfort exchange hasn't helped you at all. 
It would have been far better to have gotten your mattress selection right the first time from someone who knows what's what.
Now, you're stuck on a mattress merry-go-round with little chance of making the right choice without guidance from someone who cares that you make the right choice.
The store you bought from, has on their website, "100% Happy or your money back".
After so many dogs sold to you, that would be the way to go.
