Hi Pete,
We live in an older house with a low ceiling in the stairwell. Getting a California King-sized mattress upstairs requires some degree of bending. Our current mattress is a 2019 Simmons Beautyrest pillow-top. Because of renovations, it's been "through the wringer" six times, going up and down the stairs, and it has not weathered this treatment well at all. We are looking to replace the mattress after only 5 years. We were recently told that this model of mattress had an articulated internal structure that should allow it to bend. I'm not sure if we bent ours too far, or if the articulation was added to models after the one we bought, but its current state suggests the mattress was not really built for bending all that much. Question: Are there current models that hold up better to the bending treatment? We would like a mattress without any memory foam, of course. Ours tends to cause us to sleep too warmly. Thanks! James. Hi James, Moving your mattress is not likely to be the cause of its demise. Simmons mattresses made after 2016, when Simmons was sold to an investment group, were purposely designed to need replacing after a few years. That same investment group also bought Serta. They switched the upholstery materials to cheap, chemical based memory foam, which doesn’t hold up very well. you’ll want a mattress that uses the same type of coil system, individually pocketed coils for proper spinal alignment, but one that has no memory foam in it, as you already know. Conversely, pure organic and hypoallergenic latex is the antithesis of memory foam, extremely long lasting. Latex has been the best upholstery material for more than 100 years…chemical free, no off gassing, no more sleeping hot. My recommendation is for the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress.
