Hi Pete,
I have a 15 year old mattress and boxspring. It needs to be replaced, but I have no idea as to where to start. Stats: early to mid 60s, average weight, usual aches and pains due to age. What do I do first, next, etc.? Thanks, Pat Hi Pat, Since everything is 15 years old, we need to start from the bottom up. Take a look under your bed. Make sure your framing isn’t bent of bowed. Some steel bed frames can bend over time . Your sizes wouldn’t necessarily make that a problem. It doesn’t hurt to take a look. If you have a bedstead, (headboard and footboard), make sure that the cross slats are not bowed. Next is the foundation/boxspring. If you use your old boxspring, you’ll automatically void the warranty of any new mattress. While none of the “name brands” make a mattress worth buying, (due to the memory foam they use), their foundations are perfectly fine. The places with the lowest prices on these are: Big Lots-Simmons, Costco-Sealy, Sam’s Club-Serta. The down side is: they only come in the 9” height and delivery is not available. My recommendation is the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height…5” or 8”, and your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered wood foundations. They are a bit dressy, but reasonably priced….Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ I have 3 options for the mattress. All 3 have the aforementioned components…individually pocketed coil system and pure, organic latex upholstery. At your sizes, the first two are all you need. The third is what I would normally recommend for heavy people, but it also has better edge support. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress. This mattress comes with white glove delivery, which includes setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packing materials. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. UPS delivery to the front door. This mattress has a much higher coil count than the others. It arrives fully formed, (not shrink wrapped), which is why the edge support is better. The Natura mattress takes about 6 weeks to arrive, while the Williams and PlushBeds mattresses take only about 2 weeks. This, too, comes with white glove delivery. However, delivery only includes setup in your bedroom and removal of all packing materials…and NOT removal of your old mattress. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well.
