Hi Pete,
My husband and I have had a bad experience with our current pillow top mattress sagging, and in a very short period of time. We’ve also tried 100% latex mattress, but couldn’t seem to adjust and still had back pain most days. Our guest room has an old Spring Air back supporter firm mattress with a latex topper and it is still pretty comfy. For man years, we had slept on a Simmons Beautyrest two sided flippable mattress and it was also a good mattress. So, we’re thinking rather than keep wasting time and money on fancy over priced mattresses, we’d like to find just a good solid inexpensive firm mattress that will not sag. One that we can put a ~2” latex topper on…soft most likely. Could you recommend a good inexpensive firm mattress that will not sag? We’re looking for a King under $2,000 including the topper. I am 5’7” ~160lbs and my hubby is 6’0” ~220lbs. I sleep on my stomach and he’s on his side or back. Would greatly appreciate any recommendations!!! Thanks, Jen Hi Jen, Those old mattresses were extremely well made. But, a lot has changed since then. Most of today’s mattresses are upholstered with memory foam, which wears quickly…especially if it’s a pillowtop. The pillowtop part being the first thing to wear well. And while an all latex mattress is the highest quality and longest lasting of all the foams, it doesn’t have the pushback support needed for worn discs. No all foam mattress will relieve that kind of back pain. I have an excellent option for you, which you’ll be pleased to hear, comes well under budget…one with the coils you need for support. The Mattress: The Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex in the Medium Firm option for your husband’s size…offering firm, contouring support with latex upholstery. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height and color. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well.
