Our First New Mattress

First, thank you for your blog. It has certainly helped make some sense out of all of the disinformation out there. 
Second, my wife and I are looking to buy our first new mattress and could use your guidance. We need a queen bed and are comfortable spending something in the $1500 to $2000 range. 
We are both relatively young, so no special considerations or specific problems, but we would like a decent amount of support balanced with a bit of softness. 
You've convinced me to stay away from the pillowtops and all foam. I'm currently thinking that a firm tight top and a topper would be the way to go. What would you recommend that would fit the bill?
