Hi Pete,
I have had my new simmons beautyrest king hospitality mattress just over a month on the two twin xl foundations it came with, and just noticed after lifting it to assemble a metal frame to put it on that there is a 1-1.5 inch tear on the bottom ( non sleep surface). There was no damage inside or loss of material or moisture/ dirt. We just patched it with aluminum ductwork tape ( not regular duct tape) , and my husband is convinced this should be 100% fine long term. I let the Hospitality beautyrest company know that it most likely arrived this way but I only viewed the sleep surface because it was delivered right on the foundations immediately. They said a tear may void the warranty and to take photos and request a new one, but it’s not guaranteed. Rather than go to that trouble we really want to just keep it, but do you think the mattress will hold up with the aluminum patch long term? Or, is it worth the trouble of trying to replace it? So far it feels great and doesn’t affect the way the mattress feels at all, but I have never had to patch a mattress, and it’s considered a high end, expensive one that is expected to last 10-15 years. Thank you for any advice you may have. Sincerely, Marie Hi Marie, You’ve already done what was needed. It won’t have any effect on the wear of the mattress. So, don’t blame it if you only get a few years of comfortable sleep. The memory foam on top will be the reason. I’m sorry to say. Hopefully, I’m wrong in your case. Thanks, Pete ******* Thank you for the quick response, Pete. Hopefully this memory foam layer on top of this bed lasts longer than a few years since they are Hotel quality beds. I purchased them with the understanding that they will last at least 5 years. I think I would be happy with half the original plan of 10 plus years since this one is a pillow top model. I read some social media comments about them before purchasing. They are apparently extremely comfortable for around 5 years or so for pillow top models, and 7 years for non pillow tops. I know they do not at all make them as durable as they used to. I slept on my twin Serta innerspring bed for over 30 years comfortably. Thank you Marie Hi Marie, Simmons and Serta were sold to an investment group in 2016. This is when quality and the longevity that goes with it, began to suffer. Memory foam is temperature sensitive, which means it gets softer as it warms. Heavier people tend to give off more body heat than slender people. The years you’ll get will depend, mostly, on body weight. Adding a non-memory foam topper, will mitigate all of this, by creating a barrier between you and the memory foam. Your mattress will remain more like new, longer, if you use a topper. Pure organic and hypoallergenic latex has always been the best… longest lasting for more than 100 years. Today, there is also cheap latex from china that doesn’t last very long… months instead of years… So you need to be careful. Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality latex on the planet. All you need is 2”. You can even alter the feel of your mattress with a choice of comfort levels. Latex is extremely resistant, so ‘Soft’ is the most popular choice. You can even go for a more luxurious feel by choosing the 3”. I recommend getting the organic cotton cover to go with it. I believe Walmart has one. For the sole purpose of creating a temperature barrier, it’s all you need. Rotating your mattress regularly will help with longevity. Using a waterproof mattress protector will also help with longevity, by keeping your mattress clean and dry. Since your mattress is new, now is the best time to take all of these measures… Before it’s too late. And ‘too late’ comes much too quickly. Here’s a link to the mattress protector we use at home: Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector https://www.themattressexpert.com/sleep_and_beyond_protectors_and_encasements. Toppers and mattress protectors are among the few products that pay for themselves in terms of additional longevity they provide for the mattresses. Using a topper and mattress protector will double the life of your mattress. I hope this helps and I hope your new mattress serves you well.
