Is a Box Spring Better than a Platform Bed?

Hello Paddy,
There have been many changes over the last half century.
A box spring was aptly named…a box with springs in it.
From the 1920s, and for the following 50 years, there were little changes.
The box spring provided give under very firm mattresses.

Mattresses became softer with the invention of polyurethane foam…late 1960s.
By the early 1970s, box springs began to change from using large, round, softer coils to being much firmer using what was called, a torsion bar design.

Today, the old softer large round coils are almost gone.
In fact, many of today’s boxsprings don’t have any springs in them…an all wood construction, which is, essentially, a platform bed without the aesthetics of a decorative platform bed.
While the term, boxspring, is still commonly used, the generic term for box spring is foundation. 

What supports today’s mattresses must be firm with little give.
Be it a platform bed of a matching foundation.

The key to a successful mattress purchase is less about the foundation and more about the mattress. 
Specifically, avoiding mattresses upholstered with memory foam.
But that’s a whole other story.
