Do I Really Need a New Mattress?

​Hi Pete,
I’m so glad that I found your blog and website.
I bought a new Sealy Posturepedic mattress a few months ago.
A couple of months into it, a sag developed where I sleep.
The store said that was normal and refused to exchange it.
They did offer me a comfort exchange for a firmer mattress with a $200 exchange fee, which I regrettably agreed to.

Here it is, two months later, and this one is starting to do the same thing.
It’s not as bad, but decided to go back to the store to complain about it.
As I suspected, they refused to do anything about it and told me I had already used my one comfort exchange.
I kinda expected that. What I didn’t expect was to see my previous mattress on their floor, being sold as a floor sample close out. Isn’t that illegal?

Anyway my question is, do I really need a new mattress or is there something I can do with this one? After reading your blog, is a latex topper a viable option?
If so, which one?

Hi Eliana,
Since you’ve been reading my blog posts, you must now know that it’s been the memory foam used in your mattress that has caused the sagging. Not only by Sealy, but also by every major brand…now that those brands have all been sold.

It is illegal for a retail store to sell a used mattress, especially when misrepresented as a floor sample close out.
Unfortunately, it happens all the time, since your older mattress can’t be returned to the manufacturer for credit.

To answer your question…yes, there is a way to salvage the mattress you have, which would eliminate the need for a new one.
A latex topper is, in fact, a long term solution.
The latex topper creates a barrier between you and the memory foam in your mattress. Memory foam is temperature sensitive, which means it softens and sags as it warms from your body heat.
Latex is not temperature sensitive and will prevent the memory foam from sagging.

Since your mattress is so new, you can put the topper on top of the mattress.
For older mattresses, flipping the mattress first is often necessary.

You’ll want pure, organic latex, as opposed to latex with fillers like those imported from China. Sold as all natural latex, they wear rather quickly.

You’ll want to order that in Soft. 2” is comfortable. 3” is a bit more luxurious.
I recommend getting the optional organic cotton cover to go with it.
