Hi Pete,
I have a lot of sleep issues and need help choosing the right mattress. I've been an insomniac for more than 25 years. I am the lightest sleeper on the face of the Earth! If my boyfriend slightly moves a foot, I wake. Also, I have degenerative discs in my low back and if a mattress is not firm enough, my lower back kills the next day. I prefer to sleep on my stomach, but I toss throughout the night because of my back. I also have severe airborne allergies and my doctors have recommended that I get a new mattress and encase it in a product that keeps allergens and critters from entering and staying in the mattress. Can you recommend a product? In the 3 years I've been with my boyfriend I've only been able to successfully sleep with him when we stay at very nice hotels on very nice king beds. This is hard on a relationship when you can't sleep in the same bed! So, I have a lot of issues, please give me some recommendations for an appropriate king size bed. Thank you! I am having a major flare up of thoracic back pain. When I go to sleep at night, my back is fine. But after 5 hours of sleep I have terrible thoracic and rib pain. So far it looks like this is arthritis but I am having an MRI soon. Our mattress is only a few years old. It’s a Queen Simmons Beautirest pillowtop, to which we have added a 1“ memory foam topper. If I sleep by myself on an older twin in our guest bedroom, I have a less pain. Getting a new mattress might help my problem but I do not want to spend the money and find out it does not help or that I have made an incorrect choice. They and Serta were purchased by an investment group in 2016. They haven’t made a mattress worth buying since. The major difference is the memory foam they’re using…without question, the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. And, having a pillowtop doesn’t help…the first thing to wear. Best Option: A Latex/Pocketed Coil Hybrid Mattress. We bought a king size Simmons Beautyrest mattress less than a year ago, and it is already sagging on each side where we sleep. We are average weight. The middle is still perfect. We tried to exchange it, but the sagging is not 1.5' deep. I can't sleep at all. It is too soft for me and I am starting to have back pain in my lumbar region and in my neck. My question is: Would a firm latex topper help or we should just buy a new mattress? We prefer a firm king mattress if you think getting a new one is the best option which one would you recommend?? The spaciousness of a king allows the users to sleep further apart. The hump up the middle develops due to no one sleeping there. It’s what is known as “The Nature of the Beast”. A standard king is almost square…square enough that when you rotate the mattress, rotate it 1/4 turn. Do this every month for the first year and every 3 months thereafter. What do I do first, next, etc.? Thanks, Pat Hi Pat, Since everything is 15 years old, we need to start from the bottom up. Take a look under your bed. Make sure your framing isn’t bent of bowed. Some steel bed frames can bend over time . Your sizes wouldn’t necessarily make that a problem. It doesn’t hurt to take a look. If you have a bedstead, (headboard and footboard), make sure that the cross slats are not bowed. Next is the foundation/boxspring. If you use your old boxspring, you’ll automatically void the warranty of any new mattress. While none of the “name brands” make a mattress worth buying, (due to the memory foam they use), their foundations are perfectly fine. The places with the lowest prices on these are: Big Lots-Simmons, Costco-Sealy, Sam’s Club-Serta. The down side is: they only come in the 9” height and delivery is not available. I injured my back and thought that purchasing a new bed might help improve my back. I purchased a Plush Memory Foam Mattress and slept on it for about 2 weeks. I started getting muscle spasms in my legs shortly after purchasing it but was unsure if it was the bed or the fact that I had been moving some furniture around at about the same time I started sleeping on the new bed. Luckily I went to a store that has the comfort guarantee so I went back to the store and told them that I thought the new mattress might be causing my, what I considered, new pain and that I had borrowed my mother's egg crate for added softness and thought it was making a difference. They looked at me like I had two heads and said it was one of their best beds in the store. After talking to them for about a half hour they thought maybe the same bed with just more, softer memory foam would be better for me. So I made the switch, and the new mattress was delivered to me yesterday. I was looking forward to sleeping on it thinking it would indeed be way more comfortable than the one I first purchased. My muscle spams had decreased quite a bit 3 days before getting this bed but after sleeping on it last night I woke up with tight muscles in my legs once again and burning feet with pins and needles. I find that this bed is not as soft as it was in the store. Can this be true or am I grasping at straws. I just feel like its too dense for me and I think I need something that I sink into a little better. I'm scared to exchange it for a pillow top as I think that will probably be too soft. I did try the latex beds that they had but I found them to be too springy. I like a bed that I feel wrapped in but at the same time gives me the support I need for my back. Any advice?? This same scenario plays out, every day. First off, "one of their best beds" meant that it's one of their best sellers....which has nothing to do with quality, support, comfort or what may be right for you. Even at the factory level when we, the retailers, go for a sales presentation, nobody talks about quality or how well their product is made. They talk about how well it will sell. As far as consumers are concerned, many have adopted the notion that comfort is all there is to buying a mattress. The blame for this way of thinking, partly, falls on the mattress industry, which is pushing that idea...taking advantage of the self-indulgent society that we have become. More is not always better, believe it or not. And, what you think you want can be very different from what you need. For healthy people, the odds of what you think you want being what you actually need are iffy enough. For someone like yourself, who has some damage to their back, those odds get much shorter. Your primary assessment was likely correct. Your back injury probably did require you to buy a new mattress. However, "any new mattress" is a recipe for disaster. The one you chose lacked support as is true of all memory foam mattress….not to mention that it was too soft. The second one, that was supposed to be even softer, would have been even worse, had it had the time to break in like the floor sample you tried. Adding more memory foam is never the answer. Your sense of comfort is contrary to what you need for your back. We all require some degree of firm support for spinal health. But after an injury, your back can no longer withstand the lack of support that goes with buying an all foam mattress, which provides zero pushback support to the spine. In today's mattress market, there's only one way to get close to what you want....buying a mattress with an individually pocketed coil system for back support and one with a layer of soft latex for surface comfort. (Sinking in will only make matters worse). Latex is infinitely better than memory foam. I have a cousin with that name. Everyone calls her Cubby. The problem with your choice in mattress is twofold. The memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat, allowing you to sink into a still bag of air. The right bed for you starts with an individually pocketed coil system for contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine, while also relieving pressure points at the hip and shoulder. (Keep in mind that fibromyalgia is a surface condition. You can ignore the fact that the inside of your body requires some degree of firm support. To ignore that for the sake of the softness needed for your fibromyalgia will result in back pain…just making matters worse.)
