Hi Pete,
I’m replacing a very old Talalay Latex mattress. As I shop, I see plenty of Dunlop latex mattresses, but no Talalay. The luxurious feel of Talalay Latex is what I want. Do you know where I can find any? Thanks, Vivian Hi Vivian, The supply lines for latex, in general, were badly affected during the pandemic. Dunlop latex has made a strong comeback, due to the efforts of the manufacturers in Sri Lanka. Talalay Latex?…not so much. There is Talalay Latex coming out of China, but you’ll want to stay clear of that. The Chinese are adding clay to the mix. It’s so.d as all natural, but it’s not pure. The result is lower pricing and a much shorter life span. The Suite Sleep Portfolio Mattress is the only mattress I know of that’s topped with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Talalay Latex. Shown here: Suite Sleep Suite Portfolio Mattress | C&C Mattress, LLC cc-mattress-llc.square.site This is the highest quality latex mattress I could find at the industry trade shows. My husband and I are looking to buy a high quality Cal. King size mattress. We have gone to a local store and was informed that a Serta Pillow Top mattress for $3000 was our best bet. After reading reviews on that mattress, which weren’t good, and reading information from your blog it seems that you are more partial to a firm mattress with an added topper. What are your recommendations for the very best Cal-King non-pillowtop mattress and what kind of topper is best for a 'heavenly' feel? Thanks so much! This is a very difficult task. Sharon Hi Sharon, If you’re looking for “the best” in terms of support, comfort and longevity, I can highly recommend the sleep system that my wife and I have been sleeping on for the past 10+ years, which is still in like new condition with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. What’s more, despite my bad back from herniated discs, I’ve slept and awakened without back pain all these years. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress, (which is no where near as soft as it sounds), and a Suite Sleep Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic 3” Soft Vita Talalay Latex Topper. You’ll love going to bed and this mattress comes with White Glove Delivery. Here are links to each of those products. My mattress is so firm, it makes my shoulders hurt. What is the best option for shoulder pain? latex? Which latex mattress is the softest? Thanks, Brian Hi Brian, Since you already have a mattress that’s providing the firm support your body needs for support, all you need now, is a mattress topper to provide the surface comfort you need for your shoulders. Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex is the best for long lasting comfort. Pure Latex is the most resilient upholstery available. The softest of them is the Suite Sleep 3” Soft Pure Vita Talalay Latex. A friend has a Stearns and Foster latex mattress, they’ve had for many years. I was able to try it out. It was super comfy. I’d like to get a mattress like that in king size. Do you have this mattress? Thanks, Jack Hello Jack, S&F hasn’t made a latex mattress since 2014, after having been purchased by Tempurpedic. I’ve been through 4 mattresses in as many years, which is what sent me to the internet to research what’s going wrong…which is where I found you. Based on some of the things I read on your blog, I’m now wondering if I really do need to buy a new mattress. Your blog suggests that it’s the memory foam in these mattresses that is causing them to wear out so quickly. Your blog explains that the memory foam is only on the top and that if I flip the mattress over and add a non-memory foam topper that I can get away with not having to replace this mattress. Does that really work? If so, which topper? Thanks, Lydia Hi Lydia, Yes. It works. Many of the people who write to me have problems with memory foam. Not only does it wear quickly, it sleeps hot and allows you to sink, which causes back pain and numbness in the arms, legs, hands & feet. Flipping the mattress over eliminates all of those problems. The topper serves to provide the surface comfort you need to sleep deeply. Which topper is a question of satisfying your personal needs. First thing to do is to flip your mattress over and try it for comfort. You should immediately feel an improvement in the way it supports. If you feel that it needs to feel much softer, the Suite Sleep 3” Pure Vita Talalay Latex Mattress Topper is your best option. If you only need a little extra softness, the one of our other toppers will address various other needs. For instance, the Magniflex MagniCool 3D topper will allow someone who naturally sleeps hot, to sleep much cooler. The Sleep & Beyond toppers are an excellent value. None of our latex products come from China, where fillers are used to reduce the cost of pure latex. A short lifespan goes along with Chinese made latex, making it a poor value. Our focus has always been about quality and the longevity that quality provides. Here is a link to our Mattress Toppers page. This post was an email sent to a woman who called me, distraught over her situation. It's not an uncommon problem, so I thought I'd share it with all of you. This person, like so many others, had been taken in by advertising and by a smooth talking salesperson. In her case, the mattress is a Stearns & Foster. But this situation isn't unique to that brand. She's a large woman who suffers with back pain and arthritis. She was sold an expensive, poor quality pillowtop mattress and an adjustable bed base that she didn't need. Now, she feels like she's stuck, dealing with a mattress retailer that doesn't care. Thanks, John Hi John, A retailer is obligated to service you if they sell you a defective product. Even then, they are under no obligation to refund your money…only provide you with an exchange. However, the problem with your mattress isn’t likely to a defect. S&F, owned by Tempurpedic since 2013, hasn’t made a mattress worth buying since before January of 2014. So, to exchange that mattress for any other S&F model will result in the same dissatisfaction that you’re experiencing now. If you are forced to accepting an exchange, choose a mattress that has no memory foam in it. It’s the memory foam that is causing your problems. If you aren’t receiving the level of satisfaction from your retailer that you want, there are steps you can take to coerce them to service you as you want. You can contact the BBB, your state’s Bureau of Consumer Affairs, your state’s Attorney General, local news agencies consumer advocates, leave negative reviews on the internet. Threatening to take these measures can have a positive result. It’s important to register your complaint to the person at the top of the chain. Owners dislike having to get directly involved with this sort of thing and often will instruct their subordinates to give you whatever you want just to avoid dealing with your problems. As I said, it's the memory foam in your mattress is what’s causing your problems. Memory foam is poorest quality upholstery material on the market. Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…which enhances profits for everyone. Even though the memory foam collapses when you're in bed, it returns close enough to its original shape when you get out of bed…which allowing you to prevail in a warranty claim, highly unlikely. Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat. It reflects your body’s heat back to you, causing the mattress to sleep hot. And as if all that weren’t bad enough, memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals. Some of those chemicals are carcinogenic…formaldehyde and benzene are only 2 of the more dangerous chemicals used. All of the name brands have been sold and all are using memory foam upholstery. All of them are a problem and none of them are worth buying. You mentioned Gold Bond during our conversation. That would be a good brand to consider. Just make sure that whatever you get next has no memory foam. To address your problem immediately, flip your mattress over and add whatever you have on hand to soften it…like a comforter. This trick will help you get a better night’s sleep while you wait for this issue to be resolved. We had been a Sealy/S&F dealer for many years prior to Tempurpedic buying them. We stopped selling both brands because we knew what to expect from memory foam. We went shopping at the industry trade shows for high quality alternative brands. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses are what we found to replace S&F. The specifications are higher quality than the specifications of S&F BEFORE Tempurpedic bought them. For a woman your size, with your physical ailments, my recommendation will come in two parts. 1) A mattress strong enough to hold up under your weight over the long term. 2) A soft latex topper to cushion the surface for your arthritis. Natural Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years. A latex topper will also absorb much of your body weight, which will cause the mattress to last longer than it would without it. Years from now, when the latex topper needs to be replaced, you can do that without having to replace the mattress. There is NO Memory Foam in these mattresses. There are no pillowtop mattresses on our website, either. The pillowtop part of a mattress is the first thing to show wear…and it does so much too quickly. The mattress I’m recommending for you is the Natura of Canada Greenspring Luxury Firm. Click on this link to view the line and click on each model to view specifications and prices. https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ Add to that, the Suite Sleep 3” Organic Latex Topper in Soft. Shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/suite_sleep_latex_toppers.html#/ An adjustable bed base is a good thing to have if you spend time in bed reading, watching TV, or working/playing on a lap top. For sleeping, it has little to no therapeutic value. Sleeping flat, which maintains the natural alignment of the spine, is what best relieves back pain. What’s more, an adjustable bed will cause whatever mattress you chose to go with it to wear quickly. When the head is raised, your body weight shifts from being evenly distributed to a central point just under your butt. It’s at this point in the mattress that will wear more quickly than it normally would. You have to understand what you’re up against when shopping at most of today’s mattress stores, which is a sea of mattresses upholstered with memory foam. Salespeople are poorly trained when it comes to knowing their products. They are no longer made to understand the components of their mattresses or how they work. They are, now, no better equipped to advise anyone as to what they need than the man in the moon. Today’s mattress sales training is focused on how to maximize the dollars of the sale, and how to close the sale. The mattress industry, on a whole, has gone bad. Millions of dollars are spent to advertise poor quality products, which you pay dearly for to cover the expense of that advertising. I wish her luck with all of this. We have a very expensive Tempurpedic mattress that is sagging after only 2 years. I called the store to complain. They sent out an inspector, who measures the depth of the body impressions. Those impressions measured 1" and we were told that they are within the normal range. The sinking of the mattress is much worse when we're on it, but the inspector said that it didn't matter. It matters to us. We are stuck with a mattress that is causing me back pain and my wife, hip pain. What makes all this worse, is that we are still making payment on this pos. Do I have any recourse with the store or Tempurpedic? What can I do about this, short of buying a new mattress that we can't afford? Thanks, Jeff Hi Jeff, You have no recourse with the factory or the retailer. Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive. (As memory foam warms from your body heat, it softens, allowing you to sink into it.) The diabolical part of memory foam is that it returns to its original shape, or close enough to it, as to make it highly unlikely that you prevail in a warranty claim. Here's what you can do about it. Flip the mattress over. The only bad part of the mattress is the memory foam, and that is only on top. The memory foam is supported by firm, high density polyurethane foam....which is NOT temperature sensitive. The flip side, as is, will relieve your back pain, but only exacerbate your wife's hip pain. For both, relieving your back pain AND relieving your wife's hip pain: Add a Suite Sleep All Natural, 3" Soft Organic Dunlop Latex Mattress Topper to the flip side of that mattress. Shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/suite_sleep_latex_toppers.html#/ This has worked for many before you with the same problem. (You aren't alone.) I'm trying to solve a mattress problem. We recently bought a fairly expensive mattress. We tested it on a box spring in the store, but the bed frame that we purchased with our house is a platform style (no prior experience with this style). We like the look of it so we gave away the box spring. For the first couple months things were ok. But now, my girlfriend and I are starting to experience stiffness and back pain in the middle of the night and early mornings when we had absolutely no issues prior. These issues seem to clear up once we get moving over the course of the day, so I have to believe it's related to the mattress or the platform bed. I was wondering what you would suggest as a solution for us to try? The bed feels fine when we initially lie down on it, but obviously overnight something isn't agreeing with us. Thank you, Dan Hi Dan, Today's boxsprings are cheaply made and made to be rigid. A platform bed provides similar support. That's not the problem. Most of today's mattresses are upholstered with memory foam, my guess is that you have one of these. Your problem is with the memory foam in your mattress. Memory foam is a horrible product...specifically designed to cause the mattress to need frequent replacing. For most of what is made today, equating expense with quality is a huge mistake. The truly diabolical part of memory foam is, that when you get off of the mattress, it looks perfectly fine, because the memory foam returns to its original shape. The point being, that prevailing in a warranty claim is highly unlikely. Memory foam has created a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer. There is fix to this problem. Flip the mattress over and add a soft latex topper to that. This will put the memory foam at the bottom. The underside will provide firm support and the latex will give you the surface comfort you need to sleep well. Ideally, it would be best to get rid of that mattress and start over with a mattress that has no memory foam. If going with "the fix", here is a link to the latex topper you'll need. The Suite Sleep 2" or 3" Soft Organic Latex Mattress Topper is all you'll need to transform your mattress into a sleep system that you will look forward to every night..
