Hi Peter, I just purchased a Stearns and Foster firm mattress at the end of August. I had it replaced once, after only a month, because the side that I sleep on felt different from the rest of the mattress. It was soft & squishy, whereas the side I don't sleep on was still firm. Now my second one is doing the same thing. And this is not a minor difference; my 7 year old son thinks the difference is severe. The side that I sleep on feels like a soft pillow top, whereas the side I don't sleep on feels firm! If this is *supposed* to happen, how on earth can I tell which mattress to buy in the store, given that the mattress will feel totally different after one month??? Help! It’s a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from the heat your body gives off. As you’ve discovered, it’s incredibly difficult to pick a mattress trying it at a store. Most stores are a sea of memory foam upholstered mattresses. All of the name brands have taken the same turn as S&F. Sealy is also owned by Tempurpedic. Simmons and Serta were sold in 2016 to an investment group. They are now one company… all upholstered with memory foam. Your options: Buy a mattress without memory foam. Hi Pete, My boyfriend and I purchased a Stearns and Foster pillowtop mattress about 3 weeks ago. The bed is at my house and he generally only stays over on weekends. Im heavier, about 275 pounds. The side of the mattress that I sleep on already feels much, much squishier than the side that doesnt get slept on as often, the other side still feels nice and firm. The pillowtop part is only part of the problem you’re experiencing. The memory foam upholstery is another reason why your side is sinking in. Even if you exchange it for another S&F mattress without a pillowtop, you’ll be back in the same situation within months. If the store you’re dealing with has mattresses that don’t have any memory foam in them, those would be the ones to consider. We purchased a Stearns and Foster Blisswood Luxury Firm Mattress from you, back in 2012, with one of your Latex Toppers - 2" Soft. My husband is over 300 pounds and now says that the mattress makes his back hurt. I am 200 pounds and have a herniated disc in lower back and bursitis in my hips. The year after you bought that mattress, Tempur-Pedic bought S&F. Everything S&F makes today has memory foam upholstery. Nothing they make lasts very long because of it. Yours has no memory foam in it, which is why it’s lasted for so long. If you would like a repeat of your experience, providing the same support, comfort and longevity, I recommend the Natura Greenspring Mattress, in Plush, and a new latex topper. I recommend staying with 2” Soft. 3” with more easily compressed under your weights. Dunlop is more resilient than Talalay. I’ve been following your blog for years, now. It’s very interesting. I’ve read, quite often, about your opposition to memory foam. A couple of months ago, I went to a local mattress store. I told the salesman about you and what you have to say about memory foam. He told me that you, either, don’t know what you’re talking about or just trying to sell what you have. He then went into great detail about why memory foam is the latest, greatest mattress padding on the market. He was rather convincing. My wife insisted that we buy it. Long story even longer, I chose to believe him over you. And, I wanted to make my wife happy. Now, only a couple of months later, I have learned “the hard way”, that you’d been right all along. I am now getting ready to fight with him for a refund, that he has told me is not available. It's a Stearns and Foster Plush King Mattress. It’s now noticeably less comfortable. Body impressions are already forming, which I’ve been informed are not deep enough for a warranty claim. This is not what happened when I tried it in the show room. It was extremely comfortable. Jack Hello Jack, We had been a Sealy/S&F dealer for many years, prior to them being sold to Tempur-Pedic in 2013. S&F had been considered the Cadillac of the Industry for decades, up to that point. They turned into nothing more than expensive junk, literally over night. Getting a refund isn’t likely, without some degree of coercion. You might try reversing the charge through the finance company. Your local news agencies often have a consumer advocacy department. Getting in touch with your state’s department of consumer affairs may help. If all else fails, a lawyer. Is you find yourself stuck with that mattress, there is a long term fix. The memory foam on top of the mattress is where the problem lies. Promoted as high quality, memory foam is actually the worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s a low resiliency, temperature sensitive material that reacts to your body heat. (Which didn’t have a chance to happen while trying it in the store.) As it warms, it softens, allowing your body to sink so far, as to throw off body’s natural alignment. The heavier parts of the body sink the furthest, which leaves your arms and legs higher. Blood circulation to those areas is reduced, causing numbness in the extremities. And, as if all that weren’t bad enough, it reflects your body heat back to you, causing you to sleep hot. And to add insult to injury, memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. Several of the chemicals they use are carcinogenic… 61 chemicals, in all. The Fix: For a new mattress: Simply add a non-memory foam mattress topper to the surface. This creates a barrier between you and the memory foam, so that it can no longer react to your body heat. 2” of Soft or Medium Pure, Organic Dunlop Latex is all you need. For an older Mattress: Memory foam wears quickly. I want to buy a Leggett Platt adjustable bed and for a mattress I like. The mattress is a Stearns and Foster Ultra Firm. It is wrapped coils with a foam edge. I don't know about wire around the coils. Will this mattress work with the adjustable bed? Thanks, Lou Hi Lou, That’s an older, extremely well made mattress. The foam edge support is very strong. Due to that, and that the mattress is an ultra firm, I doubt that it will work easily on an adjustable bed base for anything more than slight elevation of the head and foot. If you stand at the foot end of the mattress and lift, I think you’ll find that the mattress will remain somewhat stiff. Getting it to bend will require your body weight…and again, you’re not likely to get more than a slight bend. There is no border wire in that mattress, so you don’t have to worry about damaging it, should you decide to buy that base.
