Hi Pete,
I SURE hope you can help me! In the last 7 years, I have BOUGHT 4 mattresses!! I have degenerative disc disease affecting the mid part of my back to about the top of my hips. MOST mornings my back is so stiff that it takes me about 2 or 3 hours to quit hurting! I have tried a Tempurapedic, HATED it. A very high end S&F pillow top with memory foam, HATED it. Right now, it’s a Sleep Number Bed. NONE of these have kept me from suffering and stiffening up! I am so sick of sleeping on the couch when I have spent TONS of money on mattresses! I know the recommended 'thing' is a firm mattress and I just cant sleep on a hard surface. I, very much, prefer a 'cloud' to sleep on . I am at my wits end about this!!! PLEASE HELP! I have not had a good nights sleep in several years!!! Needless to say I am now terrified to spend a lot of money on yet ANOTHER mattress and I am all for any 'scratch and dents' you might have at a big discount! I do, however , have to have a KING size. I appreciate you, Doris Hi Doris, First off, you have to know where you you’ve been going wrong, over the past several years…making the same mistakes over and over again. All of the mattresses you’ve purchased have been upholstered with memory foam. Despite all the sales hype to the contrary, memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive. As it warms from the body heat you give off, it softens, allowing the heavier parts of your body to sink further than the lighter parts. This throws off your body’s natural alignment…causing all sorts of pain. Secondly, you’ll be happy to know that you don’t have to buy a second hand mattress to get a great price for what you need and want. A mattress using an individually pocketed coil system for proper support that maintains the natural alignment of your body and spine, that’s upholstered with Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex foam, is what you need to sleep well and wake refreshed for many years to come. My recommendation comes in 2 parts. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium for lightweight to a little above average weight…Medium Firm for heavier weight. Shown Here: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 And while this mattress is comfortable, to achieve that cloud like feel, add a Latex for Less 3” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper. Shown Here: Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper | Latex For Less These products are surprisingly affordable. The mattress is On Sale, and comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. ******* You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height and color. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well. Hi Pete,
My husband and I are looking to replace (who knows how old) a mattress that is finally beginning to hurt our sleep. My friend recommended you highly, but we don't know what to buy. We have a queen bed and we are looking for mattress and box spring. I am heavy and have arthritis in my knee and hip -- my husband is tall and has some restless legs -- Can you make a suggestion for us. Jean Hello Jean, I can highly recommend the same mattress that my wife and I have been sleeping on for the past 10+ years…and still in excellent condition. The individually pocketed coils provide support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine…with the highest coil count available. And, Natural Talalay Latex Upholstery for long lasting comfort. Latex is and has been the best upholstery available, for the last 100+ years. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush is that Mattress. My husband and I are both very heavy people. We’re both young, 30’s, with no physical problems as yet. He is just under 6 foot tall and about 360 lbs. Where as I'm 5'2" and 240lbs. I was wondering what mattress would be best for us, that’s both, long lasting and comfortable. Thanks, Beth Ann Hi Beth Ann, The most durable and comfortable type of mattress is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam Rubber….has been for the last 100+ years. In fact, I have family members that have been sleeping on an all latex mattress for quite a few years. They, too, are on the young side. And, both of them are heavier than the two of you. We have a couple of manufacturers who are making pure latex mattresses. Suite Sleep on the higher end, Latex for Less on the lower end. Frankly, you can’t go wrong with either. Suite Sleep offers Talalay Latex and Two Sided flippable models. Latex for Less is all Dunlop Latex. The latex used by both brands is Pure, Organic Latex. Here are links to both: Suite Sleep Pure Organic All Latex Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/suite_suite.html#/ The Latex for Less Pure Organic All Latex Mattress Organic Latex Mattress | Latex For Less ******** You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. I'm a female 72 years. I'm a bit on the heavy side, but not obese. I have severe scoliosis and severe degenerative disc disease AND I also have both shoulders that need replacing and don't know if I'm ever going to be able to have that surgery. I presently have a memory foam mattress that is luxurious and "gives" with my body weight. I have had this mattress for a few years and it was quite expensive. However, I am now getting up in the mornings with terrific back pain and need to go lie on another bed in my home, stretch out and do some exercises before I can tolerate anything. Even after this, it takes awhile before I can function without moderate to severe pain. I NEED another type of mattress that will give me the support I need for my back, but that will give me some padding for my shoulders as well. I'm desperate. Can you suggest the type of mattress that would be best for me. Most sincerely, Judy Hi Judy, It’s the memory foam on top of your mattress that has failed you. Memory foam was specifically designed to need frequent replacing. The heavier parts of your body is sinking too far, which throws off the natural ailment of your spine, which is why you’re having so much pain. You have a couple of options. First, flip your mattress over. The flip side is made of high density polyurethane foam, which does not allow you to sink into it. It’s not comfortable, but your back will feel better immediately. Do that today and sleep on it tonight. Tomorrow, you’ll be in a better position to determine if you actually do need a new mattress, or just a soft topper to make that mattress comfortable. The topper option is far less expensive. If you decide on a topper, Pure Organic Latex is the best you can buy. Latex will not allow you to sink. The feel is one of floating. Latex for Less has the best prices. I recommend choice of 3” Soft. If you decide on a new mattress, then the best you can get is the same as the one my wife and I sleep on at home. You and I are the same age. I was diagnosed with bulging and herniated discs, along with Degenerative Disc Disease, about 20 years ago. We’ve had our mattress for more than 10 years, and it’s still in great shape. But more importantly, I have slept and awakened without back pain over these past 10+ years. The individually pocketed coils provide an independent suspension type of support that is ideal for relieving chronic back pain. The coil count is higher than any other brand. And it’s upholstered with Natural Talalay Latex. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush is that mattress. Shown Here: Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-ultra-plush/92?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true This mattress comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes setup in your bedroom and removal of all packaging materials. ******** Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. I want to find a good mattress for relieving fibromyalgia pain. I bought a Sleep Number after the salesperson told me it would be good for relieving my fibromyalgia pain. Was I misled! What a joke that was! WORST BED EVER!!!! After reading some of your blog posts, I believe you can help me. I look forward to your recommendation! Thanks, Ursula Hi Ursula, Unusual name! I have a cousin with that name. Everyone calls her Cubby. The problem with your choice in mattress is twofold. The memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat, allowing you to sink into a still bag of air. The right bed for you starts with an individually pocketed coil system for contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine, while also relieving pressure points at the hip and shoulder. (Keep in mind that fibromyalgia is a surface condition. You can ignore the fact that the inside of your body requires some degree of firm support. To ignore that for the sake of the softness needed for your fibromyalgia will result in back pain…just making matters worse.) Mattresses like The Williams Kingston Plush and the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss…both are excellent quality, using the aforementioned pocketed coil system and both use Pure, Organic & Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery. And, both are currently on sale. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes: setup in your bedroom and removal of all packaging materials and removal of your old mattress. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress comes with ups delivery to the front door, but comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Here are links to each of those mattresses: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 While both of the mattresses are comfortable, dealing with fibromyalgia can take the question of comfort to a whole other level. Add a soft mattress topper will, more than likely, be necessary. Soft Latex will provide long lasting additional comfort. The best value in latex toppers comes from Latex for Less. I recommend 3” Soft, and a cover to go with it. Here’s the link for that: Latex for Less Mattress Toppers https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Fibromyalgia tends to be a progressive condition. If your condition worsens or is already far advanced, then a latex topper may not be enough. Under these conditions, you’ll want to include the PlushBeds Alternative Down Mattress Topper. It is incredibly soft…much more durable than real down but not as long lasting as latex. Having a soft latex topper as a base for this topper is still recommended. PlushBeds Alternative Down Mattress Topper https://www.plushbeds.com/products/alternative-down-bed-topper?sscid=71k8_rmssu&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051&variant=32001051787362 You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. My son is 11 years old. Are memory foam mattresses good for him? What do you recommend, soft or firm? Thank you, Karen Hi Karen, Memory foam isn’t good for anyone. It wears quickly, sleeps hot and you certainly don’t want to expose your son to the chemical off gassing. Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals. Some, of which, are highly toxic. A body requires firm support and a comfortable surface to sleep well. A growing body will benefit from the independent suspension type of support provided by an individually pocketed coil system, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine and continually adjusts to the changing size of a growing child. It’s at this age, when your son will begin to put on weight…not long before he’s fully grown. There are two mattresses that I recommend: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress, which comes with White Glove Delivery that includes Removal of the Old Mattress. Or, The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. In Medium if he’s average size, Medium Firm if he’s already a large boy. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Both mattresses use a pocketed coil & Pure, Organic & Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery. Long lasting, no sleeping hot and no chemicals to off gas. Both are currently on sale. My husband and I are both overweight, and we both have back problems. I am looking for the best of the best mattress I can find. We need a king size that’s firm, comfortable and long lasting. I get confused and frustrated reading so many mixed reviews. Price is not a factor. Sleeping well without back pain is a factor. What do you recommend? Thanks, Lilith Hi Lilith, My wife and I are in the same boat as the two of you. While shopping at the industry trade shows, we came across the Natura of Canada Greenspring line of mattresses. I was so impressed by the high quality of the components, we decided to start selling them…and bought their Ultra Plush model for our home. That was more than 10 years ago, and our mattress still feels like new. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. The coil count is higher than any other brand. I had been diagnosed with DDD, bulging and herniated discs, about 20 years ago. Since sleeping on this mattress, I sleep and wake without back pain. Due to the high quality of the components, all four of their choices of comfort are firmer than they sound. I recommend the Ultra Plush for a nice balance of firm support and surface comfort. That and the longevity are well proven. These mattresses come with White Glove Delivery, which includes setup in your bedroom and removal of all packaging materials. Here’s a link to that line of mattresses. Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. We have an old Sealy SpringFree Beachside Latex Mattress. We bought a twin XL for son to grow up on. Now need a queen for his grad school apartment. Our son is 6’ 5”, 250 Lbs! What mattress today is most comparable? Thanks, Simon Hi Simon, The Sealy Beachside was a fantastic mattress. You couldn’t have chosen a better mattress for a child to grow up on. It’s lasted an extremely long time and provided him with excellent support. Sealy hasn’t maked anything like that, since being purchased by Tempurpedic, back in 2013. There is, however, a mattress that made very much the same.
