Hello Pete,
We hope this finds you and your loved ones well. Any proven tips to definitively clean a yellow ring stain, which resulted where plain water that spilled onto a mattress, or do any efforts make it worse? Thank you, Tom Hi Tom, K2R, or any water free spot cleaner is what I would use. I recommend using the same organic cotton waterproof mattress protector that we use at home…to prevent such things from reoccurring. Hi Pete - the mattresses at our vacation home in Colorado are working out great. Thanks as always.
I need a new queen mattress for our daughter’s house in Mississippi - for the guest room we’ll be sleeping in when we visit :-) Last time you had us order the Wolf Tulah luxury plush euro top mattresses, but I know model names and numbers change daily! What would you recommend? Thanks, Steve Hi Steve, Welcome back. The Wolf mattresses provided an excellent value…quality at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, Wolf sold their brand last year. The new owners do not have the same commitment to quality and value. We stopped carrying that brand as a consequence. For a guest bedroom, you can’t beat the Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress. It’s really all you’ll need for occasional use. Shown here: Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale However, since you’re going to be sleeping in it, you might consider the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. They are similarly made, with the PlushBeds mattress being a bit more substantial…a bit more luxurious. Shown here: PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Both are available in Medium or Medium Firm…with the Medium being a bit more comfortable. However, for heavier people the Medium Firm is the better choice. If your daughter needs a new foundation and bed frame, these from Rize are very strong: Rize EZ Foundation https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/rize-ez-foundation/120?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=KCHQK3ZHPLUMKAYIB3TW4E7C Rize Bed Frames https://www.themattressexpert.com/bed_frames.html#/ This foundation from Magniflex is dressier and available in low profile. Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. We are looking to purchase two mattress sets. One is for our 16 year old daughter and the other is for my husband and myself. My husband is leaning towards a foam mattress. My husband's back hurts from time to time and when we have used a foam topper in the past, he says his back feels better. We have been to several mattress stores, read reviews, and looked on consumer reports, yet we are still having difficulty choosing the right mattresses. Any suggestions? Thank you for any assistance you might be able to provide. Chrissy Hi Chrissy, There's a lot of bad and misleading information out there. Addressing your confusion will be a bit long winded. Even the unusually trustworthy Consumer Reports, is way off base on this subject. If you can find the previous CR Mattress Issue, you'll read that they could not offer help, as the mattress industry has made everything so complicated that they couldn't figure it out. A few months later, they abandoned their honest answer and interviewed a group of people in Denver and left it at that…for a while. Since then, they’ve been testing mattresses without mimicking body heat. All of the name brands, along with many others, are upholstering their mattresses with memory foam, which is a temperature sensitive material that reacts to body heat. Hence, CR’s conclusions are inaccurate. When you shop at the stores, you get a sales pitch...highlighting the positive aspects of any given mattress and not bothering to mention any of the negatives associated with them. Customer’s reviews found on-line are usually solicited immediately after delivery. Those positive opinions often change within a short period of time, as memory foam wears quickly. There's usually no problem with a mattress when it's still new. Over the past 20 years, especially the past 10 years, when the industry realized that they can actually get away with the crap they're pulling...25 years if you count when it all started, buying a good mattress has gotten to be more and more difficult. There are two products that have lead to this phenomenon of being able to sell cheaper made, shorter lived mattresses at higher prices...and being able to sell you the same crap over and over again. Those items are memory foam and pillowtops. Memory Foam is, positively, the worst, most diabolical material ever invented for use in a mattress. A temperature sensitive material, it softenes when it's warmed by your body's heat....and returns to its original shape when you get off...but, not right away. You've all seen the commercials with the hand print that's left in it. I remember when I first saw that 25+ years ago. I couldn't believe that anyone would see that as a good idea. But, I was wrong. The power of mass media marketing told you, almost continually, that it was a good thing. Tell a lie often enough and it’s eventually perceived as the truth…as the saying goes. Today, most mattresses have memory foam and are shown on the sales floor with pillowtops...because these items are good for what the stores and factories want...they're good for "making the sale". It's the only thing that this industry, on a whole, cares about. The sooner you catch on to all of this, the sooner you'll stop: 1) wasting your money, and… 2) buying products that cause enduring physical problems. And, I have yet to mention the respiratory problems that so many people experience with the use of memory foam. Your husband’s back pain will, most certainly, worsen on an all foam mattress…especially memory foam. To relieve persistent back pain, you need the upward support of an individually pocketed coil system, which provides the firm, contouring pushback against the back, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. No all foam mattress will do that, allowing the heavier parts of the body to sink too far…throwing off that alignment. While finding a good mattress is a more difficult process than it used to be, it can still be done. Here are a couple of good choices...mattresses without pillowtops and with no memory foam. The first for your daughter and the second for you and your husband. For children (and guest bedrooms): Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress…in Medium https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale For adults: PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress…in Medium Firm https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Both mattresses are upholstered with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex foam….having NO memory foam. Latex has been well documented as the superior upholstery material for the past 100+ years. After you’ve slept on these mattresses for a week, then would be a good time to decide if you want the added luxurious feel that a soft topper provides. Here too, latex is far superior to memory foam. Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality latex toppers available anywhere. Shown here: Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 2” Soft is plenty comfy. 3” Soft is more luxurious. Adding a latex mattress topper is one of the few items that pays for itself. Besides adding surface comfort, the high resiliency of latex absorbs most to all of your body weight, (the percentage depends on your weight). This reduces the pressure on the mattress, causing it to remain like new longer and greatly extending the life of your mattress. And, unlike an attached pillow top, it can be replaced for a whole lot less than replacing a mattress when the pillow top part wears out, which happens much too quickly. Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector https://www.themattressexpert.com/sleep_and_beyond_protectors_and_encasements. If you also need a new foundation and/or bed frame, these from Rize are extremely strong and durable. My husband and I recently invested in an adjustable bed, with two twin-xl memory foam mattresses in medium firm. I hate it and cannot return. We have been sleeping on it about 3 months. This is our second memory foam mattress, I did not like the first one as I was always too hot, but was talked into getting another one by a salesmen, who said it had cooling gel on top to keep me from overheating, which it does, but I still seem to feel suffocated by any type of foam mattress. We bought memory foam due to buying an adjustable bed, but we find we are not really using it that much anyways. Anyhow, we are looking to find a firm mattress as I have some lower back issues. We both seem to be side sleepers for the most part, occasionally on our back. I was wondering what coil type mattress you might recommend that is very breathable. My husband. Weighs about 210lbs, and I am 135lbs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Amy Hi Amy, There are a few types of foams. Only memory foam produces that hot, suffocating sensation. To prove that to you, flip your mattresses over. The memory foam is only on the top. The flip side is firm, high density polyurethane foam, which does not sleep hot and you won’t feel suffocated by it. My recommendation for a coiled mattress is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss. Medium for you…Medium Firm for your husband. The individually pocketed coils provide firm contouring support with the pushback against your spine to maintain proper spinal alignment. THIS is what will relieve your back pain. The upholstery is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam, which sleeps cool and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100+ years. No memory foam in this mattress. I’m looking for an organic mattress for my husband and myself. We’ve been suffering with a mattress that smells like chemicals and it’s making us sick. It sleeps hot and makes my husband’s back pain worse. I don’t know how he got talked into buying this horrible mattress! We need something that will actually relieve his back pain, doesn’t stink and doesn’t sleep hot. We’re average size and like firm support with comfort that’s not too soft. We were referred to you by a friend who thinks you’re “da bomb”, as she put it. What would you recommend? Thanks, Linda Hi Linda, I have just what you’re looking for. We need a couple of mattresses. We’ve wasted too much money on memory foam, so we don’t want that. After finding your blog, we now know why they were such a waste of money. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge. We want to get your take on what would be the best mattress and what would be the best value mattress, if not the same mattress. I’m a large guy, while my wife is smaller but not petite. I have a bad back, which was only made worse by our previous mattresses. I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks, Frank Hi Frank, You’re in luck. You’ve come to the right place. Both of my recommendations are designed to relieve chronic back pain. I need a bed for my large teenage son…mattress, boxspring and bed frame. He’s rough on stuff, so it needs to be strong. Unfortunately, I don’t have unlimited funds for this. So while I need quality, I also need value for my money…quality that doesn’t cost a lot. Can you help me with this? Thanks, Adeline Hi Adeline, I can, indeed. We carry many high quality products that are reasonably priced. Starting from the top down, these are my recommendations for everything you need…all will last for many years under your set of circumstances. I’m looking for a long lasting, high quality mattress with NO memory foam in it. (Been there, done that…never again). I’d like something that reasonably priced. Many cost many thousands of dollars. I prefer something that has firm support and a comfortable top. I’m an older, average size female and I sleep alone. What can you recommend that won’t need to be replaced in a few short years? Thanks, Wilma Hi Wilma, I see you learned the memory foam lesson, the hard way. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium is an excellent choice. The individually pocketed coil provide firm, yet contouring support that is designed to maintain the natural alignment of your body and spine. The pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery provides comfort that lasts for many years, with no off gassing, no sleeping hot and no sinking in. These problems that are common with memory foam, simply do not exist with latex. Click on this link to view that mattress, where you can place your order. Our son is transitioning from a crib to his 1st big boy bed, in full size. We bought him a crib that will do that, so we only need a mattress. The question is, which mattress? I’ve read some horror stories about chemical off gassing. I don’t want that. Looking for proper support and comfort that won’t need to be replaced anytime soon. Also, which waterproof mattress protector do you recommend? Thanks, Opal Hi Opal, There’s no need to spend a lot to get what you want.
