Hi Pete, We just purchased a Simmons Beautyrest luxury firm mattress. I now have constant pain in my shoulders, back, hips, knees and ankles now. I think this mattress is way too hard for me. Can you suggest the mattress I should be looking at for a replacement, using my comfort guarantee. This way, you'll solve your immediate problem and avoid the problem that you'll have with the memory foam upholstery in a year's time. Memory foam wears quickly. I just wanted to know if you could give me your overall opinion of the Simmons Beautyrest Black line of mattresses. I've heard mixed reviews on the Black Line. What do you think? Thanks, Carrie Hi Carrie Simmons was sold to an investment group in 2016. That same investment group also bought Serta and made them one company. Prior to the sale, the Black line was Simmons best… something we used to recommend frequently. It’s still Simmons best, but that’s not saying much since the quality of all their mattresses has plummeted due to the poor quality memory foam they use in all their mattresses. The mixed reviews are due to when the reviews are posted. A lot of people will post a positive review right after getting delivery. It feels pretty good when they’re new. Most mattresses do. The bad reviews are posted after the consumer has had it a while. It only takes a matter of months to find you’ve made a mistake. Memory foam is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing and not under the terms of the warranty. All of the name brands that you could once trust to make a high quality mattress, have been sold. The new owners have substituted high profits for high quality. While trading off their previous reputations, the consumers who used to own one from years ago find out too late that they’ve been had. I wish I had better news for you. I’ve been working in this industry for more than 50 years, and I miss the quality they had prior to them getting new owners. What you have, is among the very best that Simmons ever made. A Cadillac among mattresses… pun intended. There’s only one mattress, that I know of, that will satisfy your sense of quality. It happens to be the same mattress that my wife and I have at home. Ours is 11 years old and still in like new condition, with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. Yours has 1000 coils (queen size coil count) Ours has 1020. What’s more, the steel is tempered. Simmons never used tempered steel. Instead, they pre-compressed their coils. (9” coil in a 7” pocket). The upholstery in yours is mostly chemical based polyurethane and a little latex. Ours is mostly latex with a little plant based polyurethane. The mattress to which I’m referring is the Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush. (Not as soft as it sounds, due to the quality and resiliency of the components) Unlike most of today’s mattresses, there’s no memory foam in ours. There’s none in yours, either… which accounts for the longevity. And, unlike most of today’s mattresses, it takes a while to arrive (several weeks) This mattress comes with white glove delivery… in a box the size of the mattress, as opposed to being shrink wrapped, rolled and boxed for ups delivery. If you have a platform bed, then all you’ll need is the mattress. If you have a 30 year old boxspring, that will need to be replaced.
