Hi Pete,
I am looking for a mattress, but I’m a bit overwhelmed. I would like a firm mattress that will support my weight, over 300 lbs. I have low back problems, causing severe pain. It looks like a firm mattress with a soft latex mattress topper would be the best choice, but I am not sure which bed would be best. I want a mattress that will last. I have been sleeping in a recliner since I hurt my back. The last time I tried to sleep in a bed, I only made it two hours before my back ached so bad I had to get up & move to a chair. I miss stretching out in a bed! Help!! Please! Thanks, Monica Hi Monica, Your assessment is correct. Adding a soft latex topper to a firm mattress does more than provide surface comfort. It absorbs much of your weight, which adds years of life to a mattress, giving you the longevity you want. The strongest are the Natura Greenspring Mattresses. My wife and I have their ultra plush model. It’s more than 10 years old and still in great condition, with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. For you, I recommend their Luxury Firm model and a 2” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper from Latex for Less. Here are links to each of those products: Natura Greenspring Luxury Firm Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-luxury-firm/79?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper | Latex For Less AND… You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. The mattress won’t feel or wear as it should, due to weak spots that develop in an old foundation. And, doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Hi Pete,
I’m in the market for a new mattress. My current mattress is a Simmons Beautyrest Advantage. I know they’ve been discontinued for quite some time. On the tag it says the model is M23011.60.7405. I know it’s a shot in the dark but would you know if they carry something similar? I don’t even know where to begin looking!! Thank you for any help you can provide! Adam Hi Adam, Simmons was sold in 2016 to an investment group that also bought Serta. The upholstery material was changed to a cheap memory foam that is designed to cause mattresses to need more frequent replacing. Trading off the name that had been known for quality, they’re dependent on prior customers who assume that the quality is still there. Their quality isn’t even close to what it had been. Simmons had been using polyurethane, latex…and in their later years, prior to being sold, a very high grade of memory foam. Simmons had always been famous for their individually pocketed coil system, which provides an independent suspension type of support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. THIS, more than anything else is what makes your Beautyrest so comfortable. The key to your next successful purchase is in finding a mattress that has that same type of coil system with no memory foam in it. Having been in this business for more than a half century, I recommend only non-memory foam mattresses. I have 3 mattresses to offer you that have an individually pocketed coil system and are upholstered with latex foam. Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for more than a century. Each of the mattresses I’ll be recommending include different services. Most Popular…PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. Pocketed coils and pure, organic latex…includes a 100 Night Trial. Available in Medium or Medium Firm. UPS front door delivery. Shown here: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Williams Kingston Plush Mattress Vey much like the PlushBeds mattress, a bit plusher in feel, and includes white glove delivery. Delivery includes setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packaging materials. Shown here: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT Lastly, the mattress my wife and I have been sleeping on for more than a decade…The Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush (not as soft as it sounds, due to having a much higher coil count than either of the other two). My wife and I are large people, over 200 lbs each. This is the mattress we recommend for that weight range. As you’ll see from the link, there are 3 other choices of comfort. These firmer models are recommended even heavier weight people. These mattresses also come with white glove delivery, but removal of your old mattress is NOT included. That line of mattresses, shown here: Natura Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. The mattress won’t feel or wear as it should due to weak spots that develop in an old foundation. And, doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. My husband weighs 280 lbs. We have an all latex mattress. It’s held up well, considering how big he is, but he now has two protruding disc and his back is hurting. Any suggestions? What is the difference between king a california king? Thanks, Roxie Hi Roxie, Easy question first: King size: 78” wide x 80” long Cal King size: 72” wide x 84” long King is better for extra elbow room. It can be rotated 1/4 turn, which promotes more even wear…equaling greater longevity. Cal King is better for taller people. Your husband’s back pain… Your husband is lacking the proper support for his spine. What he needs is a pocketed coil mattress with latex upholstery. The individually pocketed coils provide the pushback support his damaged spine requires in order to maintain proper alignment. No all foam mattress will do that. Latex is, by far, superior to memory foam…in terms of durability, which is a major advantage when it comes to cushioning heavier people. For larger individuals we recommend the Natura Greenspring Mattresses. There are 4 choices of comfort. My wife and I have been sleeping on their Ultra Plush model for more than a decade. It’s still in great condition…with each of us weighing than 200 + lbs. What’s more, I have a very bad back…Herniated and Bulging Discs, along with Degenerative Disc Disease. Yet, I have slept and awakened with No Back Pain all this time. These mattresses have the highest coil count available, and are upholstered with all natural materials, including Natural Latex. No Off Gassing. Also included is White Glove Delivery. Delivery includes setup in your bedroom and removal of all packaging materials. Here’s a link to the Natura Greenspring line of Mattresses: https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. We recently purchased a Simmons Beautyrest mattress. I believe I may be allergic to it. I wake up with cold symptoms and a headache in the AM. I saw a post that someone else had the same issue. Is there anything in the mattress that could cause this? Thanks, Nathalie Hi Natalie, There most certainly is! The memory foam upholstery consists of 61 different chemicals. Some of those chemicals are highly toxic. The chemical gasses are trapped in the cellular structure. Your body weight causes the cells to break open, releasing those gasses into the air. The chemical smell is more than just unpleasant. Those gasses attack your respiratory system, causing the symptoms that you’re experiencing. Thanks, Pete - TME ***** Hi Pete, Thank you for this information. You’re right about the smell. I figured it was just a “new mattress” odor that would go away eventually. What can I do about this, if anything? Thanks again, Nathalie Hi Nathalie, Since every living breathing being in your home is affected by it, the best thing is to send it back for a mattress that has no memory foam in it. If that’s not possible, do what you can to break open all of the cells in that foam and air out the mattress…and the bedroom. Putting weight on every inch of the mattress will achieve that. But that’s not the end of the story. Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as is warms from your body’s heat. At first, it feels good. But, memory foam isn’t very resilient. In a relatively short time, your body will begin to sink too far, throwing off the natural alignment of your body and spine, which usually results in back pain. So, trading that mattress for one without memory foam is still your best option. Thanks, Pete - TME ***** Wow, Pete! I had no idea! We never had a problem with our old Beautyrest, which is why we bought this one when the old mattress wore out. What changed? I believe I can return this mattress. If I can return it for a refund, what mattress do you have that you would recommend for a couple of plus size people? Thanks again for your incredibly helpful responses. Nathalie Hi Nathalie, All of the name brand mattresses have been sold. The new owners changed their upholstery to the same memory foam that’s in your mattress. Memory foam insures that their customers will need to replace their mattress much more frequently than in previous times. Their profits have soared, as a result. Their focus in all about profit and no longer about quality, as it had been with the original owners. Since they hype memory foam as the best thing since sliced bread, most consumers are unaware…unless they stumbled across my blog and others like it. Sealy and S&F were sold in 2013 Simmons and Serta sold in 2016 Nothing that any of them make today are worth buying. My wife and I are large people, each weighing more than 200 lbs. Our mattress is more than 10 years old and is still in great condition. Needless to say, it has no memory foam. The individually pocketed coils is the highest coil count available and, the primary upholstery is all natural Talalay Latex with a little plant based polyurethane. No Off Gassing. So, that mattress is what I’d recommend for the two of you. Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress. Due to the high quality of the components, it’s not as soft as it sounds…comfortable, but certainly, not too soft for larger people. Click on this link to view that mattress: Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-ultra-plush/92?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. My grandmother has severe Rheumatoid arthritis and is particularly sore in the mornings as her body is stiff. Could you recommend which mattress/es would benefit her the most so I can look into prices. Thank you so much! Eleanor Hi Eleanor, A mattress that uses an individually pocketed coil system for support will help to relieve pressure on the body, while also maintaining the natural alignment of her body and spine. One that’s upholstered with soft, pure, organic latex will add to relieving surface pressure. Latex provides the feeling of floating. Which mattress will depend on her size. If she’s light to average in weight, the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium is an excellent choice. If she’s a bit heavier, the same mattress in Medium Firm. If she requires a white glove delivery service, including removal of her old mattress, the Williams Kingston Plush Mattress is best. If she’s very heavy, the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress is recommended. (The Greenspring Mattress is not as soft as it sounds, due to the high quality of the components. It won’t be too soft.) All of the above mattresses are pocketed coil/latex hybrids. I am in the market to replace my ancient queen mattress/box springs but am dealing with a couple of issues: 1) My husband and I are heavy people, around 200 lbs and are around the same height. We are both side sleepers. 2) I have back pain/degenerated discs and he has bad knees/feet. I suppose I am looking for something sturdy (resistant to sagging) that will address the pain issues. Neither likes a soft mattress. I would like to keep it around $3000. Thanks, Beth Hi Beth, There is a mattress that is made for heavy people, that will address your back pain, but not one that’s specifically designed to help with knees and feet. My wife and I are heavy. Each of us are more than 200 lbs. The mattress we have is over 10 years old and still in great shape. I have a lot of sleep issues and need help choosing the right mattress. I've been an insomniac for more than 25 years. I am the lightest sleeper on the face of the Earth! If my boyfriend slightly moves a foot, I wake. Also, I have degenerative discs in my low back and if a mattress is not firm enough, my lower back kills the next day. I prefer to sleep on my stomach, but I toss throughout the night because of my back. I also have severe airborne allergies and my doctors have recommended that I get a new mattress and encase it in a product that keeps allergens and critters from entering and staying in the mattress. Can you recommend a product? In the 3 years I've been with my boyfriend I've only been able to successfully sleep with him when we stay at very nice hotels on very nice king beds. This is hard on a relationship when you can't sleep in the same bed! So, I have a lot of issues, please give me some recommendations for an appropriate king size bed. Thank you! I wanted to let you know that we have been sleeping well. We received our Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress a couple of months ago. If I remember correctly, it’s the same mattress you and your wife sleep on at home. We hadn’t been sleeping well prior to getting this mattress, so it’s been quite a treat for us. Thanks for the recommendation…Alan Good Morning Alan, A good night’s sleep is the whole point of this exercise. My husband and I are looking to replace (who knows how old) a mattress that is finally beginning to hurt our sleep. My friend recommended you highly, but we don't know what to buy. We have a queen bed and we are looking for mattress and box spring. I am heavy and have arthritis in my knee and hip -- my husband is tall and has some restless legs -- Can you make a suggestion for us. Jean Hello Jean, I can highly recommend the same mattress that my wife and I have been sleeping on for the past 10+ years…and still in excellent condition. The individually pocketed coils provide support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine…with the highest coil count available. I'm a female 72 years. I'm a bit on the heavy side, but not obese. I have severe scoliosis and severe degenerative disc disease AND I also have both shoulders that need replacing and don't know if I'm ever going to be able to have that surgery. I presently have a memory foam mattress that is luxurious and "gives" with my body weight. I have had this mattress for a few years and it was quite expensive. However, I am now getting up in the mornings with terrific back pain and need to go lie on another bed in my home, stretch out and do some exercises before I can tolerate anything. Even after this, it takes awhile before I can function without moderate to severe pain. I NEED another type of mattress that will give me the support I need for my back, but that will give me some padding for my shoulders as well. I'm desperate. Can you suggest the type of mattress that would be best for me. Most sincerely, Judy Hi Judy, It’s the memory foam on top of your mattress that has failed you. Memory foam was specifically designed to need frequent replacing. The heavier parts of your body is sinking too far, which throws off the natural ailment of your spine, which is why you’re having so much pain. You have a couple of options. First, flip your mattress over. The flip side is made of high density polyurethane foam, which does not allow you to sink into it. It’s not comfortable, but your back will feel better immediately. Do that today and sleep on it tonight. Tomorrow, you’ll be in a better position to determine if you actually do need a new mattress, or just a soft topper to make that mattress comfortable. The topper option is far less expensive. If you decide on a topper, Pure Organic Latex is the best you can buy. Latex will not allow you to sink. The feel is one of floating. Latex for Less has the best prices. I recommend choice of 3” Soft. If you decide on a new mattress, then the best you can get is the same as the one my wife and I sleep on at home. You and I are the same age. I was diagnosed with bulging and herniated discs, along with Degenerative Disc Disease, about 20 years ago. We’ve had our mattress for more than 10 years, and it’s still in great shape. But more importantly, I have slept and awakened without back pain over these past 10+ years. The individually pocketed coils provide an independent suspension type of support that is ideal for relieving chronic back pain. The coil count is higher than any other brand. And it’s upholstered with Natural Talalay Latex. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush is that mattress.
