Hi Pete,
My wife always liked our mattress to be high off the ground. She said it made her feel like a princess. I never liked it that way, but went along with her wishes. Recently, she twisted her ankle and is finding it difficult to get in and out of bed. How can I lower the height of our mattress? Any help would be appreciated. Mark Hi Mark, There are a couple of ways to lower the height of a mattress. The least expensive is by changing your bed frame to a Rize Low Profile. These frames measure 4.5” off the ground, compared to the standard 7” height. Shown here: Rize Bed Frames https://www.themattressexpert.com/bed_frames.html#/ Also Available: The Magniflex KD Foundation in low profile, which measures only 5”, instead of the usual 8” or 9” standard height box spring. Hi Pete,
We’ve been sleeping on a Sealy Reflexion Venice Beach Latex Mattress for the past 19 years. We flipped it about 8 yrs ago. This mattress was incredibly comfortable for most of that time! Now, not so much, as we and it have gotten older. We’re looking for suggestions on a replacement. We are back and side sleepers and like firm support over mush. We’re thinking of going with two twin-xl and an adjustable bed base. Thanks, Richard Hi Richard, Before offering a recommendation, I have some questions. Are you looking for another all latex mattress? How old are you? What are your sizes?…Heights & Weights? Are you suffering with any physical ailments? Thanks, Pete - TME ******************** Hi Pete, We like latex but are not glued to the idea. I will admit, I first looked at latex. But we have a firm spring mattress in the guest bedroom. That one is quite comfy. My wife is allergic to wool! I see wool in many new foam mattresses. I do not like memory foam, outside of a car seat, if that helps to know. I change positions quite a bit, at night. My wife sleeps more a rock. We are 70. I do have a recurring back issue, my wife has a knee issue, but otherwise, we are in ok shape. I sleep on back or side but side sleeping needs torso support for my back. I hate soft mattresses. We are 5’8 at 160 and 5’3 at 130. We are looking at dual adjustable bed bases. I like a head propped and she likes to elevate her legs. PS: I do not want to need a step stool to get in and out of bed. We have the low profile boxspring under our latex mattres, and that has been a great height for us. Hope that’s not too much info. Thanks for any insight! Richard Hi Richard, At your ages, an all foam mattress is almost always a mistake. Worn discs, which you likely have, require the upward, pushback support of an innerspring mattress. No all foam mattress provides that…not even latex, which is the best of all the foams. An individually pocketed coil mattress with latex upholstery is your best option. It is important the the latex be high quality, for the sake of longevity. I mention this because many manufacturers are using latex that’s processed in China, where they use clay as a filler. It’s sold as all natural latex due to clay being a natural material. But, it isn’t pure latex. And it wears rather quickly. Luckily for you, your sizes don’t require that you get a very expensive mattress. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress is my recommendation. Since your prefer a firmer feel, the choice of Medium Firm would be your choice. Here’s a link to that mattress. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 We need to have a conversation about adjustable bed bases. These beds are sold as if there were a great degree of therapeutic value. There therapeutic value is, actually, minimal. Elevation of the head helps with breathing issues. Elevating the legs can be achieved with a pillow. If you spend a lot of time in your bedroom, watching tv, reading or working on a laptop, then there’s a pretty good reason for spending the money. As a side sleeper, primarily, you’ll need to sleep with the base in the flat position. Here a link for your consideration. Foundations and Adjustable Bases themattressexpert.com Magniflex offers you a choice of adjustable bed bases and a KD Foundation. The later being a replacement for your current boxspring. The KD Foundation assembles easily with no tools and comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”…and your choice of color, Black, Brown, Gray. You’ll find that a king size mattress with a KD Foundation will cost a whole lot less than 2 Twin-XL mattresses with adjustable bases. Another mattress to consider comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes removal of your old mattress, should that service be important to you. My husband and I have been looking for a new mattress. We have had our current mattress for 13 years! It's a very big and important purchase and we just want to know what would be best for us. We’ve tried out several from Serta, Sealy, Ashley and Tempur-Pedic. We prefer the comfort and look of the S&F mattresses, but do not know if they are worth the price. We have read a lot of bad reviews. We just want to know that if we are going to spend $2000+ on a mattress, it needs to be the right choice. What would you recommend? Thanks, Ronnie Hi Ronnie, Since the last time you purchased a mattress, much has changed, and not for the better. All of the “name brands” have been sold. Tempur-Pedic bought Sealy and S&F. Simmons and Serta were purchased by an investment company. Quality is no longer job #1. Today, it’s all about profit. The memory foam they all use is purposefully designed to turn mattresses into a disposable item, needing frequent replacing. To add insult to injury, memory foam sleeps hot and off gases the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. In short, you’ll be disappointed with any mattress made by any of those bands….hence, all of those bad reviews. We’ve sold all of those bands prior to them being sold. Today, we only sell mattresses with No Memory Foam in them. My recommendations: Best The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses, available in 4 choices of comfort. Highest coil count, all firmer than they sound. These are the mattresses we recommend for heavy people. My wife and I, each weighing more than 200 lbs., have been sleeping on the ultra plush model for more than 10 years, and it’s still in great condition. Thank you for all the valuable information I have found on your blog. We have recently begun our search for a new mattress as the one we are sleeping on is almost 12 years old and was great while it lasted, but those days are gone. We both sleep on our sides and back and have recently developed back pain. Lower for my husband and between the shoulders and neck for me. Another concern I have is overheating as I am of the wonderful age where that can be a problem. Thanks, Susan Hi Susan, Thee thing to avoid is any mattress upholstered with memory foam. It sleeps hot. And contrary to the advertising hype, it will make your back pain worse within months of purchase…not to mention the off gassing from the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made. Nothing we carry has any memory foam in it. Which mattress I would recommend for you would depend on how much the two of you weigh. Here are my top recommendations. I hope this isn't too general of a question. We have a guest room with a 22 year old full size mattress that we want to replace. We get maybe 3-4 guests a year who stay about a week at a time. One of these guests was in a car accident years ago so had some back problems in past, at home she has a firm or medium firm mattress but never has complained about sleeping on our old mattress. Overall we are just looking for something that is comfortable for everyone. Since this bed is only going to be used like 21-28 days a year don't really want to spend a lot. While we’re at it, we will be upgrading the size of this guest bed to a queen to give couples more room. Do you have a recommendation for our situation, or is it not realistic and will we need to spend more? Thank you, Tony Hi Tony, There’s no need to spend a lot of money to get a quality mattress for your needs…providing excellent support, comfort and longevity. The Eco-Terra Latex Hybrid Mattress is ideal for this situation. Pocketed coils provide support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine, relieving chronic back pain. The Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery provides years of unparalleled comfort. It’s the last mattress you’ll ever need for your guests. I would appreciate your advice. My wife and I need to buy a new mattress. We are in our early 60's, weighing 165 and 125, and my wife has aches in her hip, shoulder and neck. We'd like to spend around $1000, but haven't found anything. Also, can we use our 10 year old boxspring? Many thanks for sharing your honest information…not something we have come across in this industry. Thanks, Aaron Hi Aaron, An old boxspring has worn spots, to which the mattress will conform. You’ll cause the mattress to wear prematurely and immediately void the warranty of your new mattress the moment you put it on your old boxspring. A new boxspring doesn’t cost much. So, you’ll save a little and risk much. It’s a perfect example of, “Penny wise, dollar foolish”. Since money is a concern, the least expensive new boxsprings can be had at, Costco, Sam’s Club and Big Lots. Unfortunately, you have to go and pick it up. They don’t deliver. From what we carry, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced for the high quality. At your sizes and for your wife’s hip and shoulder pain, I recommend the Medium instead of the Medium Firm. I am in my late 50s and have been having mid-shoulder and right hip pain for a couple of years now. I sleep on my side (usually my right side). My husband sleeps on his back and has no problems. But our expensive, pillow-top bed is 15 years old now, and I can see where it sags in the middle on my side. We weigh 140/147 lbs, respectively. A friend warned me to stay away from a memory foam mattresses because she said that when she'd turn over at night, the foam wouldn't adjust quickly enough to match her body shape and she'd feel uncomfortable and wake up. We can afford a high quality bed but I don't know what to get. What would you suggest? Thanks, Patricia Hi Patricia, Your friend is right about memory foam, but there are several more reasons why a memory foam mattress is a bad choice. it sleeps hot, wears quickly and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. Also, this business of being able to afford an expensive mattress is something I'd suggest keeping to yourself when you go shopping. Once said, you'll notice a change in behavior of most salespeople. The giddy anticipation of an easy kill from a pack of hyenas. Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration when it comes to their outward behavior is concerned, but not about how they're feeling inside. At your sizes, an expensive mattress isn’t necessary. It's better for you, and your long term comfort, to stay with something more moderately priced. You got 15 years from a pillowtop made 15 years ago. You'd be lucky to get 5 from most made today, thanks to all the memory foam being used. There are a couple of good choices for mattress....for their durability, support & comfort, without memory foam & without pillowtops. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium, which is delivered to your front door and comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress, which comes with White Glove Delivery to your bedroom and your old mattress removed. My wife and I are very heavy people, 350/300 lbs. Prior to finding your blog, we’ve been through several different mattresses in the last couple of years. Even the Big Fig mattress didn’t hold up under our weights. I’ve read on your blog about Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses. As I understand it, these are the mattresses that you recommend for heavy folks. One of these mattresses is what we’ll be buying next. The question is, which one? The ultra plush sounds like it would be too soft, and the firm model too firm. That leaves Luxury Firm or Plush. Making this more complicated is my wife’s sore hips. She’s a side sleeper. What is your recommendation? Thanks, Mike Hi Mike, I appreciate you taking the time to read my blog. You’ve done a great job of narrowing it down. My wife and I have had the ultra plush for more than 10 years. Due to the high quality of the components, it’s not as soft as it sounds. My wife also has a hip issue, so we added a soft latex topper to fix that. You’ll need to do the same. We are, each, over 200 lbs., so I would recommend that you start with the plush model…and add a 2” soft latex topper. We have family members at your sizes. The plush model/topper combination is what works for them, as it will for you. Here are links to that mattress and to the Latex for Less latex toppers. All I can say is thank God I found your blog with so much great advice. I was on the verge of dropping 2k on a pillowtop memory foam mattress. I’d like to buy two mattress sets if you deliver to Louisiana. After reading much of the Q&A on your blog, I have narrowed down the specs: I need a nice tight top, top quality mattress set and I’d like to spend about $2000 - $2500, if possible. My wife and I would like something mid range with regard to firmness. I prefer firm and she likes plush. Can you recommend something that would fit those specs? Also, I need a tight top queen mattress set for the guest bedroom. I’d like to spend around $700-$900 on the queen set. Same specs with regard to firmness: somewhere in the middle. Please let me know if you need more info from me. I really appreciate your taking the time to help me and the many others who benefitted from your blog. Thanks, Josh Hi Josh, The best you can buy is the same mattress that my wife and I have been sleeping on for the past 10+ years. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress. It’s not as soft as it sounds, due to the high quality of the components. We had to add a soft latex topper to ours to make it soft enough for my wife. So, as it is will be perfect for the two of you. This mattress features individually pocketed coils for proper spinal alignment and Natural Latex Upholstery for long lasting comfort.
