Hi Pete,
I am converting my daughter's crib into a full sized bed. She is a preschooler and on the small side for her age. She probably will never be big -- my wife is 5'0" and barely over 100 lbs., and it seems those are the genetics she's getting so that's the size of person I expect to need to support. Ideally, I’d like to buy something once (now) and it lasts her through high school (i.e. almost 15 years). Based on what I read from you it seems like something more on the plush side vs firm side would be appropriate, true? She is also short, so a lower profile might be good. What do you recommend? Thanks, Oscar Hi Oscar, You have to guard against getting her something that’s too plush, as her bones are still forming. For long term use, I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium….providing excellent support and enough surface comfort for a female. That mattress is 12” thick. Add a 5” foundation and you’ll have what you want for her. The Magniflex KD Foundation is a good choice, available in a choice of colors and also available in the 5” height. Here are links to both, the mattress and foundation. Hi Pete,
I am looking for a mattress, but I’m a bit overwhelmed. I would like a firm mattress that will support my weight, over 300 lbs. I have low back problems, causing severe pain. It looks like a firm mattress with a soft latex mattress topper would be the best choice, but I am not sure which bed would be best. I want a mattress that will last. I have been sleeping in a recliner since I hurt my back. The last time I tried to sleep in a bed, I only made it two hours before my back ached so bad I had to get up & move to a chair. I miss stretching out in a bed! Help!! Please! Thanks, Monica Hi Monica, Your assessment is correct. Adding a soft latex topper to a firm mattress does more than provide surface comfort. It absorbs much of your weight, which adds years of life to a mattress, giving you the longevity you want. The strongest are the Natura Greenspring Mattresses. My wife and I have their ultra plush model. It’s more than 10 years old and still in great condition, with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. For you, I recommend their Luxury Firm model and a 2” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper from Latex for Less. Here are links to each of those products: Natura Greenspring Luxury Firm Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-luxury-firm/79?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper | Latex For Less AND… You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. The mattress won’t feel or wear as it should, due to weak spots that develop in an old foundation. And, doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. You helped me out 1 1/2 years ago and I wound up buying a mattress from you that I'm very pleased with! Thank you!! I'm now in the market again and would like your advice once again. My specs: I'm 5'6" and about 125 pounds, no back or muscle problems (thank goodness), and a side and stomach sleeper. Last time, I bought a PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm. I was concerned that it would be too firm, but your advice was excellent. I love this mattress. As a partial stomach sleeper, I find this mattress to be very, very comfortable. Here is my current requirement. I need to buy a king-sized mattress for the guest room. I have several friends/relatives that will need to stay on a regular basis, so want to get something nice. My survey has found that most of these folks sleep on and want a "firm" mattress. One friend, in particular, is 6'2" and 230 lbs. Another couple claims to sleep on a firm mattress with a top padding which they bought. Finally, I would like something that I could sleep on as well, since my husband sometimes snores. I realize that you can't please everyone, but from reading your blog and getting educated the last time I bought a mattress, I'm thinking maybe the same mattress, but in the Medium instead of Medium Firm. What do you think? Thanks again for all your wonderful advice, Kat Hi Kat, I so very pleased to hear that you’re enjoying your mattress. Since your needs for the guest bedroom vary, I recommend staying with the Medium Firm Mattress and adding a 2” Pure Latex Topper. 2” of soft latex will provide the additional surface comfort that some of your guest require and can easily be stored under the bed for when your guests prefer a firmer feel. I am trying to find the best mattress for my 3-year-old daughter, who is moving from a crib to a full-sized bed. What brand(s) do you recommend that is good yet inexpensive? And it seems that the particular type of mattress for a girl should be plush and not firm? Thanks for anything you can tell me. Thank you, Kimberly Hi Kimberly, The Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress is the “Best for the Least”. Extremely well made and surprisingly inexpensive for the quality. This mattress promotes proper spinal alignment and comfort that feels like you’re floating. I recommend the Medium option for her. This mattress will be the only mattress you’ll need for her. It’ll last her until she’s grown and gone…and then some. Question: Im a 78 old male 160 lbs. I have osteoarthritis and a replaced knee and a rebuilt ankle. I sleep on my side and now sleep on a Serta pillowtop mattress. What does the expert recommend for me to buy? Not expensive! My present mattress is not old and has deep body impressions. Thanks for a reply, Rick Hi Rick, Serta doesn’t make a good mattress because of the memory foam. Deep body impressions under a 160 lb. man is unacceptable. My recommendation is for a PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. The individually pocketed coils provide contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. The Soft, Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery provides unique comfort, like you’re floating. It’s extremely comfortable without being too soft and it won’t allow you to sink into it…NO Body Impressions. This mattress comes in Medium and Medium Firm. For your size with osteoarthritis, I suggest the Medium. This mattress is, currently, On Sale and comes with a 100 Night Trial. Click on this link to view that mattress and place your order. I am a 21 year old female, about 90 pounds, and have a long term boyfriend (about 150 lbs) who sleeps with me every night. I also have mild sclerosis and irritated back nerves/back pain. I’m looking into getting a new queen sized mattress, but have no idea where to start. All the mattresses I’ve had, have not worn well. How can I tell what will be comfortable in the long run on my back? Are there any specific mattresses that seem suited to my needs? Thanks, Rita Hi Rita, Your lack of body weight mitigates in your favor, in terms of expense. A pocketed coil mattress that’s upholstered with soft latex it your best choice. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium will work for you, rather nicely. The soft, pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery is extremely comfortable without being too soft…creating the feeling that you’re floating. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the spine….No More Back Pain. Due to the overall quality, this mattress will remain like new for many years. You can expect decades of supportive, comfortable sleep. My grandmother has severe Rheumatoid arthritis and is particularly sore in the mornings as her body is stiff. Could you recommend which mattress/es would benefit her the most so I can look into prices. Thank you so much! Eleanor Hi Eleanor, A mattress that uses an individually pocketed coil system for support will help to relieve pressure on the body, while also maintaining the natural alignment of her body and spine. One that’s upholstered with soft, pure, organic latex will add to relieving surface pressure. Latex provides the feeling of floating. Which mattress will depend on her size. If she’s light to average in weight, the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium is an excellent choice. If she’s a bit heavier, the same mattress in Medium Firm. If she requires a white glove delivery service, including removal of her old mattress, the Williams Kingston Plush Mattress is best. If she’s very heavy, the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress is recommended. (The Greenspring Mattress is not as soft as it sounds, due to the high quality of the components. It won’t be too soft.) All of the above mattresses are pocketed coil/latex hybrids. I am having a major flare up of thoracic back pain. When I go to sleep at night, my back is fine. But after 5 hours of sleep I have terrible thoracic and rib pain. So far it looks like this is arthritis but I am having an MRI soon. Our mattress is only a few years old. It’s a Queen Simmons Beautirest pillowtop, to which we have added a 1“ memory foam topper. If I sleep by myself on an older twin in our guest bedroom, I have a less pain. Getting a new mattress might help my problem but I do not want to spend the money and find out it does not help or that I have made an incorrect choice. I am wondering what type of mattress you would suggest. Thank you for your ideas, Barry Hi Barry, An incorrect choice is exactly what you have now. Simmons Beautyrest had once made great mattresses. They and Serta were purchased by an investment group in 2016. They haven’t made a mattress worth buying since. The major difference is the memory foam they’re using…without question, the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. And, having a pillowtop doesn’t help…the first thing to wear. Best Option: A Latex/Pocketed Coil Hybrid Mattress. The coils are like those used by Simmons, but the steel is double tempered, while Simmons never tempered the steel used to make their coils. The big difference: the Pure Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery. Latex is the antithesis of memory foam. Latex is proven to be the best, most comfortable and most durable upholstery material for the last 100 years. The pocketed coils maintain the natural alignment of your spine and the latex provides surface comfort that DOESN’T allow you to sink. It’s the sinking into your memory foam that’s throwing off the natural alignment of your body and spine…causing pain. Latex creates the unique feeling of floating…very comfy. I have two choices for you…basically the same…with all of the aforementioned components…providing different services. The Williams Kingston Mattress: This mattress comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes: Setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packing materials…shown here: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress: This mattress arrives via UPS, but comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Both take about 2 weeks to arrive. ******** You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. After doing research on the internet, I found your website. It appears that you are very knowledgeable. I was hoping you could help me. I am looking to purchase a new mattress for my 6,4, 275 lb son who is only 15 years old. He plays football, wears a size 16 shoe, and I am certain he is not through growing. He gets hot really easy. The options for mattresses are overwhelming. Any advice you have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lynn Hi Lynn, The mattress industry has changed quite a bit over the past 25 years. And at an accelerated rate over the past 10 years…and not for the better. There are very few mattresses out there that will do the job, long term. My highest recommendation for quality, support and longevity is: The Natura of Canada Greenspring Firm Mattress. Shown Here: Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ And while this mattress is the best you can buy for long term use, it’s really quite firm and not very comfortable. Add to that, a Latex for Less Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper. Ideally, for his size, a 2” or 3” Medium. Shown Here: Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper | Latex For Less Together, they will provide excellent support, comfort and durability…lasting for many years to come. ********** You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation.
