I love your site - it's very informative. I have a mattress that's about 6 years old that I spent a good amount of money on. I think it's too firm and have been waking up very stiff and with lower back pain. I can't really afford a new mattress at this time. Do you honestly think that a 2” latex topper would help me? A latex topper will insulate you from the memory foam, which is the source of both of your problems. Memory foam allows you to sink, which is why your back hurts. Memory foam is temperature sensitive, absorbing your body’s heat and reflecting it back to you. I recommend applying the latex topper to both, the top of your mattress and the flip side. Many who do this have reported better results by flipping the mattress before adding the latex topper. The memory foam is only on the top. The flip side is high density polyurethane foam. I'm in my mid-70's, have had two knee replacements, a reverse shoulder replacement and am about to have surgery for a torn gluteus medius tendon in my hip. Plus I have low-back pain. I'm a side sleeper and have an adjustable extra-long twin bed. I ache all the time. My bed is too firm and lying on my side, pressure points, like the trochanter muscle, hurt. I just realized my current mattress is OLD - a Simmons we bought in 2006! My brother recently bought a Sealy Posturepedic Highpoint Plush mattress and he loves it. Says he no longer has aches and pains. I think this is a hybrid? Coils and some foam? I can't imagine buying a mattress without first trying it out to compare. Are the brands you recommend sold in stores too? I have severe Scoliosis, which affects my entire spine including my neck. Most of my back pain occurs when I sit for too long or when I lie down. I also have Fibromyalgia. I am 5'3" tall and 120 lbs. I know that a firm mattress works best for my back, but I am concerned about hip pain from the pressure when I sleep on my sides. This has been a problem. What do you recommend? I would appreciate a recommendation for a firm mattress first and a second recommendation taking hip pain into consideration. I do not want anything with memory foam in it. We bought a memory foam mattress, a few months ago. At first, it felt good. Now, In just a few short months, I’m now sinking into it. I blame this sinking into it, on the back pain I’m having. The first thing to do is to flip your mattress over. The firm underside will relieve your back pain. However, you are likely to need a softer topper to relieve pressure point pain. My wife and I are very heavy people, 350/300 lbs. Prior to finding your blog, we’ve been through several different mattresses in the last couple of years. Even the Big Fig mattress didn’t hold up under our weights. I’ve read on your blog about Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses.
