Here’s the long answer.

“In The Beginning”…going back to the late 1800’s, when latex was first discovered, the Dunlop process was all there was…a process that turned the sap from the rubber tree into latex foam rubber. It was pure and organic.
That Latex Foam started being used by the mattress industry in the 1920’s.

Twenty years later, Mr. Talalay added a couple of extra steps to the Dunlop process, and the softer, more supple Talalay Latex was born…also, pure and organic.

About 40 or so years ago, SAPSA Latex was invented…a synthetic latex that was much less expensive. Some manufacturers started using “Blended Latex”…30% pure organic and 70% synthetic SAPSA, and “Natural Latex” was born.
It was popular for many years, but is hard to find today, thanks to the supply line disruption caused by the COVID pandemic.

That same pandemic rearranged the supply lines.
Today, Pure Organic Dunlop Latex has become more readily available and less expensive than in the past.
Unlike “In The Beginning”, when Dunlop Latex was only available Firm, it is now available in a range of comfort levels, reducing the need for the more expensive Talalay Latex. 
Since Pure Organic Dunlop is the most durable, it is now the most desirable….your best value.

In recent years, Chinese produced latex has emerged as the least expensive.
The reason for the dramatic reduction in price is due to clay being added as a filler during processing.

I need to replace a Simmons BeautyRest Black Ansleigh Plush Firm mattress and latex topper that I bought from you in Feb of 2013.

Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from the body heat you give off. This allows you to sink into it. It’s the heavier parts of your body that will sink first and furthest, which restricts blood flow to your extremities. 

What to do about it?
The most economical way to address this is also a long term solution.

There's a lot of bad and misleading information out there. 
Addressing your confusion will be a bit long winded.


Even the unusually trustworthy Consumer Reports, is way off base on this subject.
If you can find the previous CR Mattress Issue, you'll read that they could not offer help, as the mattress industry has made everything so complicated that they couldn't figure it out. A few months later, they abandoned their honest answer and interviewed a group of people in Denver and left it at that…for a while.
Since then, they’ve been testing mattresses without mimicking body heat. All of the name brands, along with many others, are upholstering their mattresses with memory foam, which is a temperature sensitive material that reacts to body heat.
Hence, CR’s conclusions are inaccurate.


When you shop at the stores, you get a sales pitch...highlighting the positive aspects of any given mattress and not bothering to mention any of the negatives associated with them.
Customer’s reviews found on-line are usually solicited immediately after delivery. Those positive opinions often change within a short period of time, as memory foam wears quickly.
There's usually no problem with a mattress when it's still new.


Over the past 20 years, especially the past 10 years, when the industry realized that they can actually get away with the crap they're pulling...25 years if you count when it all started, buying a good mattress has gotten to be more and more difficult.


There are two products that have lead to this phenomenon of being able to sell cheaper made, shorter lived mattresses at higher prices...and being able to sell you the same crap over and over again. Those items are memory foam and pillowtops.


Memory Foam is, positively, the worst, most diabolical material ever invented for use in a mattress.
A temperature sensitive material, it softenes when it's warmed by your body's heat....and returns to its original shape when you get off...but, not right away. You've all seen the commercials with the hand print that's left in it. I remember when I first saw that 25+ years ago. I couldn't believe that anyone would see that as a good idea. But, I was wrong. The power of mass media marketing told you, almost continually, that it was a good thing. 
Tell a lie often enough and it’s eventually perceived as the truth…as the saying goes.
 
Today, most mattresses have memory foam and are shown on the sales floor with pillowtops...because these items are good for what the stores and factories want...they're good for "making the sale". It's the only thing that this industry, on a whole, cares about.
The sooner you catch on to all of this, the sooner you'll stop: 
1) wasting your money, and…
2) buying products that cause enduring physical problems.
And, I have yet to mention the respiratory problems that so many people experience with the use of memory foam.
Your husband’s back pain will, most certainly, worsen on an all foam mattress…especially memory foam.


To relieve persistent back pain, you need the upward support of an individually pocketed coil system, which provides the firm, contouring pushback against the back, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine.
No all foam mattress will do that, allowing the heavier parts of the body to sink too far…throwing off that alignment.
 
While finding a good mattress is a more difficult process than it used to be, it can still be done.

I have a couple of herniated discs in my back, and have been dealing with the pain from them for years. My wife suggested that a new mattress might help, so we went shopping. A salesman sold me on a Simmons Beautyrest mattress, saying that the individually pocketed coils would help keep my back straight.
At first, it worked well. My back pain wasn’t gone, but it was better.
It felt a bit warm to sleep in, and had a bit of an odor, but my back was better.
It came with a 60 day trial period, so I figured I’d know by then and everything would be fine going forward.
After the 60 days, I began to feel some discomfort, which I could work around with slightly changing position.
A month later, no change in position helped and my back started to hurt.
That Christmas gift to myself has become a total waste of money.
My back pain is back and even a little worse. The mattress sleeps hot, now that I’m sinking into it. Even my wife has started to complain that her hips are hurting.
At this point, I don’t know what to do. I can’t exchange it. 
I’d lived with that back pain for many years. But now, with my wife complaining,
I went online to figure out what went wrong, which is where I found you.
I read many of your blog posts and am assuming that my mattress has memory foam in it and that’s what’s causing the problems.
Can you off me some solutions?

Your assessment is correct. It’s the memory foam causing your problems.
So many of today’s mattresses are upholstered with that same memory foam, including all of the name brands that are now focused on profit instead of quality, now that they have all been sold. 

The key to solving your problems is in avoiding anything made with memory foam.

You have a couple of solutions.
Your salesman was right about one thing. The individually pocketed coils are essential to reliving back pain, which is why you felt better at first.
Since your mattress have that support system and is still reasonably new, flip the mattress over. The memory foam is only on top.
You’ll find your one sided mattress to be considerably firmer on the flip side…and likely to feel to firm for comfort. Although, your back pain should go away almost immediately,but it won’t help your wife’s hip.
Use whatever you have handy to soften the surface, like a comforter.

If you find that this trick works for you within the first couple of nights, then buy a latex mattress topper for it, as a long term solution.
