Hi Pete,
I have a Sealy Posturepedic mattress with 10 year warranty. I’ve just been informed that my warranty claim has been denied because the body impression isn’t deep enough. I can tell you that it’s plenty deep when I’m in bed. It feels like it’s sagging. Any suggestions as to how I can make this mattress livable? I can’t live with it the way it is and I can’t afford to buy a new mattress. This one is less than a year old. Thank you, Larry Hi Larry, The problem is the memory foam upholstery, which soften as it warms from your body heat and then sinks from the pressure of your body weight. There’s a reasonably inexpensive, long term solution to your problem. Add a Soft Latex Topper after you’ve flipped the mattress over to the firmer side that has no memory foam on it. Adding it to the top won’t help, since the memory foam is already shot. Latex for Less offers the highest quality, pure organic and hypoallergenic latex at the lowest prices. Here’s a link to those products: Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 2” Soft is comfortable. 3” Soft is more so. Be sure to get the organic cotton cover to go with it. Hi TME,
I have been looking for a new mattress. What would you recommend for a very large man, 6'2" @ 390#. I was looking at the King size Natura of Canada Greenspring in plush, or the luxury firm with a soft latex topper for the plushness I want. What would you recommend? Thanks, Fred. Hi Fred, For your size, for the sake of longevity, the luxury firm Greenspring with a 2” soft latex topper. This will allow you to replace the topper every several years without having to replace the mattress. This makes the most sense, economically. The Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses are very strong, sporting a very high coil count and using natural Talalay Latex upholstery. Latex for less has the lowest prices for the highest quality, Pure Organic & Hypoallergenic Latex. Be sure to order the organic cotton cover to go with it. The topper arrives via UPS in a couple of weeks. The mattress comes with White Glove delivery and takes several weeks to arrive. I'm looking for a queen size ultra plush mattress, as our current mattress is just too firm. We're seeking something with no off gassing as organic as possible. Also can any of your mattress sit on an adjustable base which raises feet or head? Thanks, Sandy Hi Sandy, Based on the details of your question, it sounds like you don’t actually need to go to the expense of a new mattress. You already have a mattress providing the firm support that every body needs. You only need to make what you have more comfortable. You can do that with a mattress topper. There are many types, with a layer of soft pure organic and hypoallergenic latex being the most comfortable and longest lasting. 2” of Soft Latex does make a difference. But, the 3” Soft will give you the ultra plush feel that you desire. These toppers are available with or without an organic cotton zipper on cover. I recommend including a cover when you order. Avoid latex made in China. It usually isn’t pure latex and short lived. We’ve finally decided to make the plunge and replace our old S&F King Plush Mattress after 14 years - it was a great mattress, but it's just not holding up well any longer. Went looking at a few places this weekend and found a few plush mattresses that we liked, they are out of reach for us, as far as price goes. However, and after reading some of your blog posts, we are considering going with a firmer, less expensive quality mattress and adding a 2" latex topper? We’re wondering how this setup might compare to those we tested from a feel and durability perspective. I'm ~115 lbs, but my husband is 6'7", ~260 lbs. What’s our best option at the lowest possible price? Thanks for any help you can provide. Hello, So much has changed since your previous mattress purchase. All of the name brands have been sold and the result is much lower quality and higher profit margins. There's really no question that a firm mattress and a 2" soft latex topper will out-perform any plush mattress you can buy at most stores today. Latex toppers, while soft, are extremely resilient. They absorbs much of your body weight, leaving less work for the mattress. And, you’ll need the support of a firm mattress to hold up under your husband’s size. Your best/least expensive mattress option, without sacrificing the quality you need is had from Eco-Terra. Their Hybrid Latex Mattress in Medium Firm and a Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Topper from Latex for Less is what you’ll need and want for support comfort and longevity. We’ve been thinking it’s probably ready for replacing them, but are waiting until we can better afford to do so. We have a platform bed along with an “Avenco Hybrid” mattress that has been in our guest bedroom for two years, which has been used maybe 4-5 times, for about a week each time. Our eldest daughter will be moving in and using that guest bedroom which requires us to remove the bed in there as she’s keeping her own. We’re not sure which mattress to keep for our bedoom…. the older Beautyrest Black or switch it out for the newer Avenco Hybrid. I weigh 155 lbs and my spouse 150. I have disc problems and we’re both in our mid 70’s, so shoulders and to some degree, hips, have been hurting for both of us. I’m just afraid if we part with the older BR Black and keep the Avenco or vise versa, we might be making the wrong decision on which one gets discarded. Thanks so much, Pete- you are our expert! Sam Hi Sam, You have one of the last mattresses made by Simmons. Almost immediately afterwards, Simmons was sold to an investment group that also bought Serta. What you have is far superior to the mattress in your guest bedroom. The latex topper has absorbed all of your body weight, which has preserved the mattress, which should still be like new as a result of using that topper. If you haven’t done so, rotate the mattress and flip the topper over. You’re nowhere near needing a new mattress, since it hasn’t worn much over the years. In fact, given your sizes and ages, you can expect that mattress, used with a latex topper, should last you for the rest of your lives. It is probable that you need a new topper. Is so, Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Toppers available anywhere. You might consider a 3” Soft for extra comfort, given your shoulder and hip discomfort. If ordering a new topper, be sure to order the organic cotton cover to go with it, which is optional. I read your blog yesterday about flipping a one sided mattress and adding a topper. We have an very old Bassett Mangrove Bay latex mattress and have flipped it as you suggested. That helped to relieve the backache tremendously, but now it’s too firm for comfort. We are interested in the latex topper and need help deciding between soft and medium. I loved the Mangrove Bay until the backache started, which is now not a problem, thanks to you. Any info on which way to go with the latex topper will be greatly appreciated. I would like to order ASAP! Thanks – Susan Hi Susan, Pure, Organic Latex is extremely resilient. A soft topper is what you’ll want for comfort… 3” more so than 2”. I have an old queen size luxury firm mattress, that we bought in 2012. It still seems to be fine, but as I get older, I find my hips hurt while sleeping on my side. What topper do you recommend for more comfort and hip pain relief? And if I decide to buy a new mattress, which would you recommend? Thank you for your expert advice. Hello, You’d be surprised by how much the mattress industry has changed over the years. When you bought yours, it was hard to buy a bad mattress. Things started changing a couple of years later, when Sealy and S&F were sold to Tempurpedic. Simmons and Serta were sold a couple of years after that. Today, you have to be a pretty savvy buyer to find a mattress worth buying. The wide spread use of memory foam is reason for decline in quality. A mattress without memory foam isn’t something that’s easily found at almost every store. If your mattress is still providing you with adequate support and all you need is additional comfort, then a topper is the way to go. Which brings us to the next story in the evolution of the mattress industry. Pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex has always been the best upholstery material. But traditionally, it had been very expensive. Fast forward to the Covid pandemic, which badly disrupted the latex supply chain. Post pandemic, the manufacturers of this high quality, pure latex from Sri Lanka, reached out to the US mattress manufacturing industry, eliminating their previous middle men, which greatly lowered the price of the latex to the manufacturers. Today, many companies that are using this latex in their mattresses, are selling online directly to the public, which further lowers the prices for the consumer, especially over buying from a retailer/middle man. Complicating all this is China. Chinese made latex includes clay as a filler, which allows it to be sold as “all natural” latex. It doesn’t wear nearly as well as “pure” latex, so you have to be careful. Here’s a link to a manufacturer who has the lowest prices on pure latex mattress toppers. “Latex for Less” Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Mattress Toppers https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 2” Soft or Medium should do it for you, considering the mattress you have. Soft provides more comfort than medium. Most popular is the 3” Soft, which provides the most luxurious feel. Be sure to opt for the organic cotton cover to go with it. This should be enough for you to avoid needing to buy a new mattress for several more years. What I recommend for mattresses today, is also a factory direct company, which makes mattresses using the same pure latex upholstery. It has a Cotton Damask Cover, 782 High Profile Tempered Steel Coils, Heavy Duty Border Rod Edge Guard and Torsion Bar Boxspring. I bought it in 2002….I rotate and flip it regularly. It is, STILL, in good condition but could be a bit more comfortable. What would you recommend? Thanks, Joe Hi Joe, You, certainly, don't want to replace that mattress. It's one of the last truly great mattresses that Sealy made. You'd be appalled to learn that there isn't a Sealy mattress, today, that's worth buying. Just a year after you bought your two-sided Sealy Posturepedic, they became one-sided. 10 years after that, Sealy was sold to Tempurpedic. Every Sealy mattress made, today, is upholstered with chemical-laden, temperature-sensitive memory foam...the worst upholstery material ever invented. There is no memory foam in the mattress you have, which is why it lasted for such a long time, along with those incredibly strong coils. If all you need is to add a bit more comfort to the surface of your mattress, then add a Soft Pure Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Mattress Topper. 2” is very comfortable. 3” is more luxurious. Visa, M/C, Discover, Amex Financing Available Follow us on Facebook & Instagram Hi Pete, I am in my late 50s and have been having mid-shoulder and right hip pain for a couple of years now. I sleep on my side (usually my right side). My husband sleeps on his back and has no problems. We’re replacing our expensive, pillow-top mattress that is now 15 years old. I can see where it sags in the middle on my side. We weigh 140/147 lbs, respectively. A friend warned me to stay away from any mattress with memory foam. She said that when she turns over at night, the foam doesn’t adjust quickly enough to match her body shape and she feels uncomfortable. We can afford a high quality bed but I don't know what to get. What would you suggest? Thanks, Patricia Hi Patricia, Your friend is right about that, but there are several more reasons why a memory foam mattress is a bad choice. Because it doesn’t respond quickly to you changing positions, you tend to wake… disrupting your sleep. Memory foam tends to wear quickly. Memory foam is temperature sensitive. It absorbs your body’s heat and reflects that heat back to you, causing your to sleep hot. Worst of all, it off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. It’s just a horrible product… the worst upholstery material ever invented. Also, this business of being able to afford an expensive mattress is something I'd suggest keeping to yourself when you go shopping. If you try it once, you'll notice a change in the behavior of most salespeople...kinda like the giddy anticipation of an easy kill from a pack of hyenas. Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration...as far as their behavior is concerned...but not about how they're feeling inside. The upholstery materials are the most expensive part of a mattress. The more padding there is on a mattress, the quicker it will wear out. It's better for you, and your long term comfort, to buy a mattress that provides long lasting support and adding a soft latex topper, which provides excellent comfort that lasts for many years. Then, all you’ll need to replace is the topper when the time comes. You got 15 years from a pillowtop made 15 years ago. You'd be lucky to get 5 from one made today. You're better off avoiding those entirely. You've been out of the market for 15 years. It was about that time when the the industry moguls decided that didn’t want to wait 10 to 15 years for the consumer to be back in the mattress buying market. Since then, mattresses are made to last a much shorter period of time. The thing that they're selling now, is comfort...luxury. The things they're using to make those sales are: memory foam and pillowtops. And making the sale is all they're good for. We carry a number of good choices for mattress....for their durability and support....without memory foam and without pillowtops. Two, in particular leap to mind, from PlushBeds… a leading manufacturer of high quality mattresses. Their Best Buy… Their Luxury Bliss model, using pocketed coils for maintaining proper spinal alignment and pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery. Their Top of the Line… Their Royal Bliss model, also using a pocketed coil unit for support, but several more exotic upholstery layers in addition to the latex. Given your weights I recommend the choice of Medium for either. Click on each of these links to view and place your order. I ended up giving it to my son about a year ago, and now cannot find another mattress that even comes close in comfort. I bought a memory foam mattress, which I hate. It is the worst mattress I've ever slept on. It's like sleeping in quicksand and when you hit the bottom, it's like sleeping on a cement slab. I am a side sleeper and my hips are killing me. So, my question to you is what type of mattress would you recommend that is similar to the beachside? I tried to find you before I made this horrible memory foam purchase, but didn't see the blog. I would have purchased from you again, for sure. I'm in agony here. But unfortunately, I cannot afford to replace this junk I have now, as I'm still paying for it, but any ideas on how I can make it better or which bed I ought to start saving for in the near future? Thanks so much for your time. Barbara Hi Barbara, The difference between latex and memory foam is like night and day, as you have painfully discovered. There is an immediate solution to your problem without going to the expense of a new mattress. Flip your mattress over to the firm polyurethane foam side, so that the memory foam side is facing down and can no longer be a problem. Then add a layer of 3" Soft latex to that. This immediate solution is affordable and will provide the surface comfort you want and allow you several years to save for the real deal. Here's a link to the Latex for Less latex mattress toppers.
