Hi Pete, I am in my late 50s and have been having mid-shoulder and right hip pain for a couple of years now. I sleep on my side (usually my right side). My husband sleeps on his back and has no problems. We’re replacing our expensive, pillow-top mattress that is now 15 years old. I can see where it sags in the middle on my side. We weigh 140/147 lbs, respectively. A friend warned me to stay away from any mattress with memory foam. She said that when she turns over at night, the foam doesn’t adjust quickly enough to match her body shape and she feels uncomfortable. We can afford a high quality bed but I don't know what to get. What would you suggest? Thanks, Patricia Hi Patricia, Your friend is right about that, but there are several more reasons why a memory foam mattress is a bad choice. Because it doesn’t respond quickly to you changing positions, you tend to wake… disrupting your sleep. Memory foam tends to wear quickly. Memory foam is temperature sensitive. It absorbs your body’s heat and reflects that heat back to you, causing your to sleep hot. Worst of all, it off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. It’s just a horrible product… the worst upholstery material ever invented. Also, this business of being able to afford an expensive mattress is something I'd suggest keeping to yourself when you go shopping. If you try it once, you'll notice a change in the behavior of most salespeople...kinda like the giddy anticipation of an easy kill from a pack of hyenas. Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration...as far as their behavior is concerned...but not about how they're feeling inside. The upholstery materials are the most expensive part of a mattress. The more padding there is on a mattress, the quicker it will wear out. It's better for you, and your long term comfort, to buy a mattress that provides long lasting support and adding a soft latex topper, which provides excellent comfort that lasts for many years. Then, all you’ll need to replace is the topper when the time comes. You got 15 years from a pillowtop made 15 years ago. You'd be lucky to get 5 from one made today. Hi Pete, Some years ago, I had purchased from you a Sealy SpringFree Beachside all latex mattress. I absoultely loved that bed. I ended up giving it to my son about a year ago, and now cannot find another mattress that even comes close in comfort. I bought a memory foam mattress, which I hate. It is the worst mattress I've ever slept on. It's like sleeping in quicksand and when you hit the bottom, it's like sleeping on a cement slab. I am a side sleeper and my hips are killing me. So, my question to you is what type of mattress would you recommend that is similar to the beachside? I tried to find you before I made this horrible memory foam purchase, but didn't see the blog. I had it replaced once, after only a month, because the side that I sleep on felt different from the rest of the mattress. It was soft & squishy, whereas the side I don't sleep on was still firm. Now my second one is doing the same thing. And this is not a minor difference; my 7 year old son thinks the difference is severe. They told me that it would last for years. They told me that it would relieve my back pain. At first, everything was fine. When it started sagging, I was assured that they were normal body impressions and that there wasn’t anything to worry about. Now that the trial period is over, the sag is deeper and my back hurts more than ever. When I called to complain, they sent someone out to look at it. They took measurements and said that it wasn’t bad enough to get a replacement. I tried explaining that when we’re in the bed, the mattress sags a lot more. The explained that they go by the depth of the sag with nobody on the mattress and that our sag wasn’t deep enough to qualify. Now, I’m stuck with this expensive sagging mattress that’s no longer comfortable and makes my back hurt. Is there a way to fix this so that it’s livable? I can’t afford to buy another mattress. It’s reasonably inexpensive and lasts for years. First, it’s important to understand why you have this problem. It’s the memory foam on to of your mattress that causes a number of problems. Contrary to the sales pitch that led you to buy that mattress, memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. Unfortunately for you, you learned this the hard way. The memory foam in your mattress is ONLY on top. It’s supported by high density polyurethane foam, which doesn’t behave in the same way memory foam does. So, the first thing to do is to flip your mattress over. If you like the degree of firmness that the flip side provides, then you’ve fixed your problems without any additional cost. For most people, the flip side is just too firm to sleep on comfortably. While your back will immediately feel better, pressure point pain will arise from sleeping on a too firm mattress. Hi Pete! I just came across your blog as I've been debating over mattresses for several weeks! You seem to know your stuff, so here's my question: I just purchased a Queen Tempurpedic and think I went a little too firm, since my last bed was much too soft. I've been in several different kinds of accidents and have pain in my neck, upper and lower back. I need a firm mattress but I like a soft plush feel on top. This Tempurpedic feels like a brick! The only way I'm sleeping now is because I bought a thick feather/down topper on it to give me some relief-but the feathers poke me even though it says it's 100% down. So, I’m sending everything back and starting over. What beds would you most recommend? Any others I may not have checked out yet? I sleep mostly on my side and some on my back. I have had trouble with my arms falling asleep, and certainly usually wake up with stiffness in my neck, shoulders and low back with mattresses in the past. So when they exchange a mattress under their comfort guarantee, they can’t send it back to the manufacturer for credit. So rather than lose money, they put the returned mattress on their floor and sell it as a floor sample close out, which is totally illegal. What you bought is a used mattress that someone else bought and used and returned. As illegal as this is, it’s the common practice of most mattress stores. If you’re stuck with it, the best thing to do is flip it over to its firm side and add a mattress topper for comfort. I have an old Sealy Posturepedic queen size mattress, model Mira Loma II. It has a Cotton Damask Cover, 782 High Profile Tempered Steel Coils, Heavy Duty Border Rod Edge Guard and Torsion Bar Boxspring. It came with a 10/10 year warranty, and Yes, I still have the paperwork. I bought it in 2002….I rotate and flip it regularly. It is, STILL, in good condition but could do with a bit more comfort.
