I just wanted to know if you could give me your overall opinion of the Simmons Beautyrest Black line of mattresses. I've heard mixed reviews on the Black Line. What do you think? Thanks, Carrie Hi Carrie Simmons was sold to an investment group in 2016. That same investment group also bought Serta and made them one company. Prior to the sale, the Black line was Simmons best… something we used to recommend frequently. It’s still Simmons best, but that’s not saying much since the quality of all their mattresses has plummeted due to the poor quality memory foam they use in all their mattresses. The mixed reviews are due to when the reviews are posted. A lot of people will post a positive review right after getting delivery. It feels pretty good when they’re new. Most mattresses do. The bad reviews are posted after the consumer has had it a while. It only takes a matter of months to find you’ve made a mistake. Memory foam is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing and not under the terms of the warranty. All of the name brands that you could once trust to make a high quality mattress, have been sold. The new owners have substituted high profits for high quality. While trading off their previous reputations, the consumers who used to own one from years ago find out too late that they’ve been had. I wish I had better news for you. I’ve been working in this industry for more than 50 years, and I miss the quality they had prior to them getting new owners. It was a floor model, which felt really great when I tried it at the store. But at home it feels different and is uncomfortable to sleep on. The problem seems to be that the edges where we sleep are softer than the center of the mattress. There are depressions where we sleep, but the adjacent area doesn't give as much, so when I change position, I'm on a firm area and a more soft area. This is uncomfortable and I can't sleep. Is this normal? It doesn’t seem like it should be! Thanks, John Hi John, You didn’t buy a “Floor Sample”. Stores offer a comfort guarantee that isn’t backed by the manufacturer. So when they exchange a mattress under their comfort guarantee, they can’t send it back to the manufacturer for credit. So rather than lose money, they put the returned mattress on their floor and sell it as a floor sample close out, which is totally illegal. What you bought is a used mattress that someone else bought and used and returned. As illegal as this is, it’s the common practice of most mattress stores. If you’re stuck with it, the best thing to do is flip it over to its firm side and add a mattress topper for comfort. They are now one company. Tempur-Pedic bought Sealy and Stearns & Foster in 2013. They are now known as Tempur-Sealy. What used to be different companies that competed with each other to make the best mattress, have digressed into 2 companies looking to see who can make the most money. They’ve achieved their record profits by using memory foam made in China, which is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. The resiliency of memory foam is very poor and it’s made of 61 different petrochemical based chemicals… some of which are highly toxic and carcinogenic. That horrible smell is the off gassing of these dangerous chemicals. Even after memory foam wears to the point where you are no longer comfortable, it returns to its original shape when you get out of bed, making it highly unlikely for you to prevail in a warranty claim. I am helping a friend with two herniated discs in the thoracic region find the best mattress to help with his back pain. The herniated discs are at T5-6 and T8-9.
