The Wolf mattresses provided an excellent value…quality at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, Wolf sold their brand last year.
The new owners do not have the same commitment to quality and value. We stopped carrying that brand as a consequence.

The difference is between “Pure” and “All Natural”.
The cheaper latex comes from China, where they add clay to the mix during processing. With clay being a natural material, those mattresses are sold as using “All Natural Latex”.
Not only does the clay filler lower the cost, it also shortens the life of the material. In having to replace it more frequently, it’s actually more expensive to use than “Pure Organic Latex” which has no filler.


Pure Latex is All Natural, but All Natural isn’t, necessarily, pure.
Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex is the superior product and provides the consumer with the best possible value.

I see that you emphasized firm in capital letters.
You won’t get what you want from S/F today, now that Tempur-Pedic owns them and using memory foam, which doesn’t wear well.


The absolute firmest/best mattress is the Natura Greenspring in firm.
It’s really quite firm, and extremely long lasting.
My wife and I have the ultra plush model from that line. 
It’s still in great condition after more than 10 years.
The firm model is even more durable.

That would have been a very old blog post.
We’ve been blogging about mattresses for 22 years.
S&F had been considered “The Cadillac of the Industry” for many decades.
We had been a Sealy / S&F dealer until Tempur-Pedic bought them in 2013. 
Since then, they’re all upholstered with memory foam.
Due to that, their quality has dropped significantly.

​Hi Pete,
Can you recommend a mattress for me? I sleep on my side and have a herniated disc on L-5 and another slipped disc on T-12. 
I've read around the web that almost all the time the king size mattresses will sag and need to be turned 90 degrees each month. 
My husband sleeps on his side too. He wants a king size but I don't want to get another one if it will sag at all.

Sagging is more of an issue with the poor upholstery materials used today, than it is about the size of the mattress.
What happens with a king size is that two people tend to sleep further apart than on a queen…simply because you can and having more space enhances the quality of sleep.
The center of a king remains like new, while wear starts to show on either side of center. 
Adding to this is the foundation/boxspring, which is two halves.
Where they meet in the center is stronger. Even platform beds are reenforced in the center.
If your mattress has high quality upholstery, you’re looking at body impressions rather than sags.
The 1/4 turn rotation on a regular basis, will minimize the impressions. 
The king size mattress my wife and I have is 10 years old and still in great shape because we rotate regularly and the upholstery is high quality.

​Hi Pete, I came across your website when I was searching for the current equivalent of my old mattress that I bought in 2007.
It was an older post from a few years ago and I’m not sure if you were talking about my exact mattress, but I saw you mentioned that Simmons don’t make mattresses without memory foam today, which is disappointing because I love the mattress I’m currently sleeping on but it is in need of replacement after being 17 years old! 
I bought the mattress in Singapore, I have attached photos of the tag, I was hoping you could advise on if the current Simmons range would suit or an equivalent.

You used the word, equivalent, a couple of times.
As long as you hold on to that, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.
Simmons was sold in 2016 and a Simmons mattress worth buying hasn’t been made since. All of the name brands have been sold. The investment group that bought Simmons also bought Serta. 
The biggest change has been in the upholstery layers…now, mostly memory foam…which is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…not to mention sleeping hot and the toxic chemical off gassing.

The news isn’t all bad if you’re not stuck on buying another Simmons.
In the past, only Simmons used an individually pocketbook coil system, which is what set it apart from the other mattresses for comfort.
Today, most innerspring mattresses use that coil system.
The trick is in finding one with no memory foam in it.

My recommendations start with the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm…using an individually pocketed coil and Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery. Latex has been the best for comfort and longevity for the past 100+ years.
