Hi Pete,
Can you recommend a mattress for me? I sleep on my side and have a herniated disc on L-5 and another slipped disc on T-12. I've read around the web that almost all the time the king size mattresses will sag and need to be turned 90 degrees each month. My husband sleeps on his side too. He wants a king size but I don't want to get another one if it will sag at all. Thanks, Mary Hi Mary, Sagging is more of an issue with the poor upholstery materials used today, than it is about the size of the mattress. What happens with a king size is that two people tend to sleep further apart than on a queen…simply because you can and having more space enhances the quality of sleep. The center of a king remains like new, while wear starts to show on either side of center. Adding to this is the foundation/boxspring, which is two halves. Where they meet in the center is stronger. Even platform beds are reenforced in the center. If your mattress has high quality upholstery, you’re looking at body impressions rather than sags. The 1/4 turn rotation on a regular basis, will minimize the impressions. The king size mattress my wife and I have is 10 years old and still in great shape because we rotate regularly and the upholstery is high quality. My recommendation comes in two parts. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm. The Latex for Less 2” or 3” Soft Latex Mattress Topper. Together, this chemical free sleep system combines to provide the support you need to maintain the natural alignment of your body and spine, a sleeping surface that is comfortable and long lasting. No off gassing. No sinking in. No sagging. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Click on these links to view those products and place your order. Hi Pete, I came across your website when I was searching for the current equivalent of my old mattress that I bought in 2007.
It was an older post from a few years ago and I’m not sure if you were talking about my exact mattress, but I saw you mentioned that Simmons don’t make mattresses without memory foam today, which is disappointing because I love the mattress I’m currently sleeping on but it is in need of replacement after being 17 years old! I bought the mattress in Singapore, I have attached photos of the tag, I was hoping you could advise on if the current Simmons range would suit or an equivalent. The tag says Milan Eurotop Plush Simmons Beautyrest. Thank you so much! Gemma Good Morning Gemma, You used the word, equivalent, a couple of times. As long as you hold on to that, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Simmons was sold in 2016 and a Simmons mattress worth buying hasn’t been made since. All of the name brands have been sold. The investment group that bought Simmons also bought Serta. The biggest change has been in the upholstery layers…now, mostly memory foam…which is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…not to mention sleeping hot and the toxic chemical off gassing. The news isn’t all bad if you’re not stuck on buying another Simmons. In the past, only Simmons used an individually pocketbook coil system, which is what set it apart from the other mattresses for comfort. Today, most innerspring mattresses use that coil system. The trick is in finding one with no memory foam in it. My recommendations start with the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm…using an individually pocketed coil and Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery. Latex has been the best for comfort and longevity for the past 100+ years. Your mattress has a Eurotop for a more luxurious feel. For that, add a Latex for Less Soft…Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Topper. 2” is nice, 3” creates a greater depth of softness. I recommend getting the cover of it, as well. This sleep system combination will most closely mimic the mattress that you’re looking to replace. If you have a boxspring, that too will need to be replaced. The Magniflex KD Foundation is vet well made. It comes in your choice of 2 heights and 3 colors. It assembles easily and with no tools needed. Here are the links you’ll need to view and order each of those products. If I buy a new mattress, can use my existing boxspring? Our current set is about 12 years old. Do you carry the Sealy SpringFree Rivercrest or Beachside Latex Mattresses, and if so, what is the price for just the mattress? Thanks, Deb Hi Deb, Sealy was purchased by Tempurpedic in 2013. The SpringFree mattress line was discontinued in January of 2014. Those mattresses consisted of synthetic latex and topped with polyurethane foam. Today, you can buy All Latex Mattresses that are made of Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex, from Latex for Less. To achieve the feel of the Beachside or Rivercrest mattresses, which were on the softer side, I recommend the following: The Latex for Less 12” Soft…shown here: Organic Latex Mattress latexforless.com This mattress comes with a 120 Night Trial Period. Can you recommend a quality "entry-level" latex mattress. I know latex is expensive and quality costs, but I'm looking to spend under 2k for a queen size mattress with low-profile boxspring and basic frame. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mark Hi Mark, Latex for Less has a high quality 9” Pure, Organic Latex Mattress that comes in your choice of firmness. The Magniflex KD Foundation is available in 5” low profile and upholstered in your choice of 3 colors. Get it with legs and you won’t need a frame. We have navigated some of the mattress confusion thanks to your site and dealing with some helpful and some incompetent sales people! We want to purchase a queen size mattress for a 2nd home. Although I am concerned about the back and hip issues I have, it is a bed that will only be slept in for 2-3 months a year and not always by us. We would like the mattress to really last about 10 years. As we are trying to keep costs down, we are wondering what you might recommend. We appreciate your informative blog and website! Alice Hi Alice, You don’t need to spend a lot to get a high quality mattress. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress is ideal for your needs. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine for back pain relief. The Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery provides extraordinary comfort and relief of pressure point pain. Pure Latex is also the most durable upholstery material available. The KLUFT Mattresses over $10k…are they really worth the price? Specifically this one: https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/kluft-signature-rose-ultra-plush-mattress-collection-100-exclusive?ID=5109593&CategoryID=3865 Still searching for a great mattress... Thanks, Natalie Hi Natalie, A mattress is a utilitarian product, specifically designed to provide you with a good night’s sleep….not that most of today’s mattresses do that for as long as they once did. But still, no one needs to spend that kind of money to get a mattress that does give you a quality night’s sleep & the longevity you’d expect. Thanks, Pete ************* Pete, I agree. What would you recommend, from your selection, that is a luxury firm top of the line made with the best of the best materials and won't sag on me in two years time? Natalie Natalie, a mattress is made of pressure sensitive materials. How well it wears over time, depends on the quality of the materials used and the pressure being exerted upon it. “Top of the line” mattresses were never a good value, as they have too much upholstery, which is more easily compressed. Top line mattresses are often sold as a luxury product. And while you do need enough upholstery to provide comfort, indulging in the industry’s attempts to sell you a utilitarian product as a luxury item always results in a shorter lifespan. Before recommending an appropriate mattress, I have some questions. What are the sizes, (heights and weights), of the people using the mattress? What are the ages of the people? What physical ailments are there to address, if any? What are you sleeping on now? What’s wrong with it? Pete ************* Pete, Our sizes: 5'9 - 150 lbs 5'6 - 130 lbs Out ages: Both 44 Physical ailments: No physical ailments but my husband often complains of shoulder and back pain after sleeping on our mattress: BISCAYNE BEDDING TAVERNIER 14" PLUSH MATTRESS My husband says it’s awful. It dips and sags and is not firm enough. He wakes up aches and pains, and he sleeps hot. He doesn’t like it Natalie Natalie, I don’t blame him. What’s wrong with your mattress is what’s wrong with most mattresses being made these days…the memory foam. While promoted as the best thing since sliced bread, it’s actually the worst upholstery material ever invented…specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. Memory foam is the only temperature sensitive upholstery material. It softens as it warms from the heat your bodies give off, causing you to sink into it. At first, it’s fairly comfortable. But, it’s not very resistant. After only a short time, you’re sinking much to far, throwing off the natural alignment of your body and spine…causing pain. The other side effects are: sleeping hot and creating the inability to change position without half waking up to do it. Some of the memory foam is cured or plant based, but most is chemical based and not cured, which results in toxic chemical off gassing evidenced by an unpleasant odor…especially when new. Your ages and sizes mitigate in your favor. My recommendation is for a mattress using an individually pocketed coil system. These coils are the body’s support…providing an upward, independent suspension type of support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. Pure, hypoallergenic and organic latex (not made in China) is and has been the best upholstery material for more than 100 years. The mattress I’m recommending for you is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss, which you can access through this link: Hybrid Latex Mattress - The Luxury Bliss plushbeds.com If you have an old boxspring, that will need to be replaced. If it’s reasonably new, or if you have a platform bed, you won’t. If you do, here’s a link to an excellent choice: Foundations and Adjustable Bases themattressexpert.com It’s important to keep a mattress clean and dry, which enhances longevity. This link will get you to our most popular waterproof mattress protector. Sleep and Beyond Protectors and Encasements themattressexpert.com While the recommended mattress provides all the support and comfort you’ll need to get a good night’s sleep, and for many years, should you wish to indulge your sense of luxury, if you have one, then add a removable mattress topper, which can easily be replaced over the years without having to buy a new mattress. I recommend waiting until you’ve slept on your new mattress before deciding if you even want to add a topper.
