Best Mattress for Back Pain from Herniated Discs

​Hi Pete,
I am helping a friend with two herniated discs to find the best mattress to help relieve his back pain.
The herniated disc are at T5-6 and T8-9. He is 5'6' and approximately 160 lbs., (give or take). 
He has been looking into Tempurpedic beds.
What type of mattress would you recommend? A soft or hard mattress? 
Are there any brands that are better than other?
Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

An all foam mattress, and memory foam in particular, will only increase his back pain.
He's being taken in by the hype surrounding that kind of mattress...and none of it is true, for long.
Memory foam is the worse type of upholstery material ever invented.
It wears quickly and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made.
A mattress with an individually pocketed coil system, will provide contouring "UPWARD" pushback support against his spine for proper support of his herniated discs.
(Any all foam mattress provides no upward support).
