Best Cooling Mattress Toppers

I am a contributor with the Mattress & Sleep section of Forbes Vetted.
I am currently working on an article about the best cooling mattress toppers. 
I am looking for a sleep expert to discuss what makes a material cooling, the best materials for cooling mattress pads, and the benefits of using a mattress pad.

Sleeping hot, for the most part, is a problem created by the mattress industry, which began about 25 years ago…slowly, at first…a big problem today.

There are 2 reasons for needing a cooling mattress topper.
1. You have a mattress that’s upholstered with memory foam…a temperature sensitive material that absorbs your body heat and then reflects it back to you.
(Many of today’s mattresses are upholstered with memory foam.) 
2. You sleep hot naturally. A problem that’s more common with people carrying excess body weight.

If you avoid memory foam upholstered mattresses, you’re less likely to need a cooling mattress topper.

Many, so called, cooling toppers are memory foam mixed with a cooling gel.
(The same gel found in Dr. Shoals insoles)
The problem of heat is not fully addressed with this type of topper, as the gel reaches a saturation point half way through the night.

There is a topper from Magniflex, an Italian company, which uses a proprietary material that actually works. How it works, I couldn’t say. I know it works because I’ve tested it on with some of my larger relatives who sleep hot naturally.

Adding this topper to a memory foam mattress does eliminate the sleeping hot problem, by creating a barrier between the mattress and the sleeper.
A side benefit is that the mattress lasts longer, as the topper does some of the work of absorbing body weight.

There is more to the memory foam story, concerning toxic off gassing and premature wear, if you’re interested. 
No one is policing this industry, so they’ve been able to get away with a lot.
