Hi Pete,
I bought a cheap medium memory foam mattress and almost immediately began suffering back pain as the mattress was too soft and my hips would sink right into it. I returned it and chose a new mattress. Although I was wary of selecting another memory foam mattress I was advised to try a combination of memory foam and springs and was told this would provide the additional support I needed. So I ended up with a firm pocketed coil and memory foam mattress. When I began to sleep on the new mattress, the pain did not subside. Initially I thought this was because my back was recovering, however after a couple of weeks the pain had not got better. Because I had been advised that the firmness and combination of springs and foam should solve the issues with my back, initially I did not think it could be my mattress causing the problem. To try to resolve the pain I have been taking anti inflammatory tablets which only provide relief while I am taking them, the pain returns immediately on completion of the course. I am a 24 year old female, 5ft 6 and 190lbs – I am quite curvy with a small waist for my size. I am in general good health and have never suffered back pain before, yet I have been in pain day and night since I bought the first mattress. I’d be really grateful for any advice you can offer on what type of mattress I should choose. Thank you very much, Zoe Hi Zoe, I’m sorry that you didn’t listen to your instincts. Your body told you to avoid memory foam. If you need to hear it, it’s the memory foam that’s causing your back pain. The individually pocketed coils are excellent for support. It’s Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam that provides surface comfort that won’t allow you to sink. Latex is far superior to memory foam in every way. Nothing new here, mattresses made with Latex have been the best…the best upholstery material for 100+ years. I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm. Excellent support and comfort that lasts for many years. And, your back pain will go away. Click on this link to view that mattress and place your order. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well.
