Hi Peter,
I am a side sleeper who has a Temper-Pedic memory foam mattress and the pain in my left hip kills me when I’m sleeping. We had previously tried a beautyrest black that felt too firm Any suggestions? Regards, Karen Hi Karen, The memory foam in your mattress is what’s causing your problem. Memory foam is the source of most people’s mattress problems. It’s a poor quality product that allows you to sink, where you’re hitting the firm polyurethane foam that supports it. I suggest flipping your mattress so that the memory foam is on the bottom where it can do you no harm. Add a 3” soft pure latex topper to make it comfortable. Latex creates the feeling that you’re floating and won’t allow you to sink. This is the least expensive way to correct your problem. If you’d rather get a new mattress, I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium. This mattress uses a stronger version of the pocketed coils found in Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. But, it’s already upholstered with soft, pure latex and contains no memory foam. Here’s are links to both solutions. Hi Peter,
I have been reading your blog and I’m still a bit confused as to what type of mattress to buy my 2 year old daughter. I'd like to buy her a twin mattress that will last her awhile but don't want to break the bank buying one. I have looked at the Simmons Beautyrest Plush mattress but do not know where else to look or if it will even last her out of toddlerhood. What recommendations would you have for a mattress that was going to be used on a platform bed frame? Thanks, Allison Hi Allison, After Simmons was sold, everything they make has memory foam. Memory foam is made of many chemicals. Some of which are toxic. It’s a temperature sensitive material that allows the body to sink into it as it softens from body heat, which throws off the body’s natural alignment. And, it wears quickly. None of these things is good for anybody. Certainly not something you’d want to expose your child to. The individually pocketed coils are good, but a plush Beautyrest uses very thin gauge, untempered steel wire to make the coils. A growing body must have firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface that’s not too soft. The Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress has everything you want for her. Strong pocketed coils and pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery. A combination that lasts for many years. This mattress is the best you can buy for the least amount of money. It’s, currently, on sale…and comes with a 90 night trial period. I recommend it in Medium for your daughter. Click on this link to view and place your order. Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well. Thank you for your service to all of us confused consumers! My hubby and I are 63. We followed your advice years ago, probably 7-8 years ago and got a firm mattress with a 3” latex topper. As we’ve aged, it’s not soft enough anymore, as it had been. He has RA and I have knee hip pain, both side sleepers usually. Our mattress set is still in great shape. Thank you for your recommendation on a future softer set. Jill Hi Jill, Welcome back. Your mattress is still in great condition because your latex topper has absorbed most to all of your body weight. However, latex wears differently from other foams…getting firmer when it’s old, instead of losing its oomph and going flat. All you need is to replace your topper to regain the original comfort level that you’ve enjoyed all these years. Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality latex toppers….3” Soft is what to get. We've had a sleep number bed for a few years now and it's getting very uncomfortable. I've been reading your blog & am considering getting a latex topper to make it more comfortable until we can get a new mattress. Would you suggest the 2” or 3” latex topper? What would you suggest for a new mattress? I have scoliosis so I know I need something firm for proper back support but I sleep on my side a lot, which can be hard on my hips & shoulders. I also have asthma, so need to stay away from any memory foam. My husband often complains of back pain in the morning (which I'm guessing is due to the air mattress & the inadequate support). Thanks so much for your advice & help! We recently purchased a mattress through your website for our son's bed, and it is working out great – we're very happy with our purchase! Melissa Hi Melissa, Glad to hear it. And, you may be glad to hear that a new mattress for you may not be necessary. The first thing to wear in a Sleep Number mattress is the memory foam padding. Your quilted cover unzips. Look to see how thick the foam is in your mattress and replace it with a layer of latex that is the same thickness. You may very well find that replacing the padding with a layer of latex is all you need for some time to come. Here's the link to the toppers. Latex for Less Pure, Organic Latex Mattress Toppers 100% Natural Latex Mattress Topper | Latex For Less It’s true, however, that a bag of air doesn’t provide the right support for someone with chronic back problems. I would recommend a mattress with individually pocketed coils, which provides the necessary pushback support that you’re not getting now. The individually pocketed coils, all moving independently from one another, maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine, which is the best type of support for relief of chronic back pain. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress has that and is upholstered with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex. We have a Tempur-Pedic mattress. It was good for only a short time. It started sagging quickly and is too hot for my husband. He is 6'3", 200 lbs. and has sleep apnea. He had back surgery 20 years ago and continues to have back and also some joint pain. I am 5'4 145 lbs with fibromyalgia. My knees, hips, shoulders hurt. The salesman said that this mattress would be good for us. It’s not. It just made matters worse and caused new problems we didn’t have before. I feel like we’ve been scammed. What mattress might give us best night's sleep? Thanks for your help, Janine Hi Janine, No all foam mattress will give you the support that your husband needs… with memory foam being the worst of them. An individually pocketed coil mattress will provide the type of support he needs. One upholstered with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex will provide the best surface comfort…no sinking in and no sleeping hot. For your sizes and conditions, I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium….shown here: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Thanks, Pete - TME Delivery is Always Free Online Ordering is Easy & Secure. I have a Serta Perfect Sleeper Fairmont mattress and I want to know if it’s compatible with an adjustable bed base. Do you know? Thanks, Chris Hi Chris, There’s no way to know, based on the little information you’ve provided. But, there’s an easy way for you to find out. Lift the mattress from the foot end. If it bends easily, then yes. If it remains stiff, then no. Thanks, Pete - TME Delivery is Always Free Online Ordering is Easy & Secure. After reading your blog posts, I know I’m addressing a person who has an angst about memory foam mattresses. I’ve now been through 3 different memory foam mattresses and understand why you feel the way you do. My angst is that I loved the way they felt when they were new and slept great on them until I didn’t. I’m asking you for a recommendation for a memory foam mattress that you think is good for longer than a few short months…one that doesn’t off gas, doesn’t sleep hot and doesn’t let me sink too far into it. Does such a mattress exist? Thanks, Pauline Hi Pauline, Yes and no. That is to say that there’s a product called MemoForm foam. It’s a chemical free, not temperature sensitive version of memory foam. Designed and produced in Italy, MemoForm foam has the feel you loved about memory foam when it’s new, but remains like new for many years. It’s chemical free, so there’s NO Off Gassing. It’s not temperature sensitive, as memory foam is, so there’s NO Sleeping Hot and NO Sinking In, which are the negative side effects of memory foam. If you like memory foam, you’ll love Magniflex’s MemoForm foam. Now with a factory here in the US, Magniflex imports the components from their plants in Italy. They have an extensive variety of mattresses, all with a 20 year warranty. Click on this link to view their line of mattresses. I hope you can help me, as I am having a very difficult time trying to find a mattress that will work for me. I have an adjustable bed for medical reasons. I cannot use a memory foam mattress due to having asthma. The chemicals is memory foam make that condition worse. Can you tell me specifically which other type of mattress may be used with an adjustable bed? I hope that you can help me...please tell me which mattresses will work with an adjustable bed; please give specific information as I am exhausted trying to find this information. Sincere thanks for your assistance. Diana Hi Diane, Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Foam is best for your condition and for use with an adjustable bed. It’s extremely long lasting. I am having a major flare up of thoracic back pain. When I go to sleep at night, my back is fine. But after 5 hours of sleep I have terrible thoracic and rib pain. So far it looks like this is arthritis but I am having an MRI soon. Our mattress is only a few years old. It’s a Queen Simmons Beautirest pillowtop, to which we have added a 1“ memory foam topper. If I sleep by myself on an older twin in our guest bedroom, I have a less pain. Getting a new mattress might help my problem but I do not want to spend the money and find out it does not help or that I have made an incorrect choice. I am wondering what type of mattress you would suggest. Thank you for your ideas, Barry Hi Barry, An incorrect choice is exactly what you have now. Simmons Beautyrest had once made great mattresses. They and Serta were purchased by an investment group in 2016. They haven’t made a mattress worth buying since. The major difference is the memory foam they’re using…without question, the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. And, having a pillowtop doesn’t help…the first thing to wear. Best Option: A Latex/Pocketed Coil Hybrid Mattress. The coils are like those used by Simmons, but the steel is double tempered, while Simmons never tempered the steel used to make their coils. The big difference: the Pure Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery. Latex is the antithesis of memory foam. Latex is proven to be the best, most comfortable and most durable upholstery material for the last 100 years. The pocketed coils maintain the natural alignment of your spine and the latex provides surface comfort that DOESN’T allow you to sink. It’s the sinking into your memory foam that’s throwing off the natural alignment of your body and spine…causing pain. Latex creates the unique feeling of floating…very comfy. I have two choices for you…basically the same…with all of the aforementioned components…providing different services. The Williams Kingston Mattress: This mattress comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes: Setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packing materials…shown here: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress: This mattress arrives via UPS, but comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Both take about 2 weeks to arrive. ******** You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well. We recently purchased a Simmons Beautyrest after testing it in the store 4 or 5 times, at length. Unfortunately, after three weeks, my husband and I are both convinced that it is too firm for us side as sleepers. Can you help me brainstorm a very similar mattress (tight top with limited or no memory foam) in the Simmons line that is comparable but PLUSH. Thank you, Cathy Hi Cathy, You don’t need to find a different mattress, since you already have the firm support that your body needs. You only need to make that one more comfortable at the surface. Add a 2” or 3” Soft Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Topper.
