I am a side sleeper who has a Temper-Pedic memory foam mattress and the pain in my left hip kills me when I’m sleeping. We had previously tried a beautyrest black that felt too firm Any suggestions? Regards, Karen Hi Karen, The memory foam in your mattress is what’s causing your problem. Memory foam is the source of most people’s mattress problems. It’s a poor quality product that allows you to sink, where you’re hitting the firm polyurethane foam that supports it. I suggest flipping your mattress so that the memory foam is on the bottom where it can do you no harm. Add a 3” soft pure latex topper to make it comfortable. Latex creates the feeling that you’re floating and won’t allow you to sink. This is the least expensive way to correct your problem. If you’d rather get a new mattress, I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium. This mattress uses a stronger version of the pocketed coils found in Simmons Beautyrest mattresses. I have been reading your blog and I’m still a bit confused as to what type of mattress to buy my 2 year old daughter. I'd like to buy her a twin mattress that will last her awhile but don't want to break the bank buying one. Memory foam is made of many chemicals. Some of which are toxic. It’s a temperature sensitive material that allows the body to sink into it as it softens from body heat, which throws off the body’s natural alignment. And, it wears quickly. Thank you for your service to all of us confused consumers! My hubby and I are 63. We followed your advice years ago, probably 7-8 years ago and got a firm mattress with a 3” latex topper. As we’ve aged, it’s not soft enough anymore, as it had been. He has RA and I have knee hip pain, both side sleepers usually. Our mattress set is still in great shape. We've had a sleep number bed for a few years now and it's getting very uncomfortable. I've been reading your blog & am considering getting a latex topper to make it more comfortable until we can get a new mattress. Would you suggest the 2” or 3” latex topper? What would you suggest for a new mattress? I have scoliosis so I know I need something firm for proper back support but I sleep on my side a lot, which can be hard on my hips & shoulders. We have a Tempur-Pedic mattress. It was good for only a short time. It started sagging quickly and is too hot for my husband. He is 6'3", 200 lbs. and has sleep apnea. He had back surgery 20 years ago and continues to have back and also some joint pain. I am 5'4 145 lbs with fibromyalgia. My knees, hips, shoulders hurt. The salesman said that this mattress would be good for us. It’s not. It just made matters worse and caused new problems we didn’t have before. I feel like we’ve been scammed. After reading your blog posts, I know I’m addressing a person who has an angst about memory foam mattresses. I’ve now been through 3 different memory foam mattresses and understand why you feel the way you do. I hope you can help me, as I am having a very difficult time trying to find a mattress that will work for me. I have an adjustable bed for medical reasons. I cannot use a memory foam mattress due to having asthma. The chemicals is memory foam make that condition worse. I am having a major flare up of thoracic back pain. When I go to sleep at night, my back is fine. But after 5 hours of sleep I have terrible thoracic and rib pain. So far it looks like this is arthritis but I am having an MRI soon. Our mattress is only a few years old. It’s a Queen Simmons Beautirest pillowtop, to which we have added a 1“ memory foam topper. If I sleep by myself on an older twin in our guest bedroom, I have a less pain. Getting a new mattress might help my problem but I do not want to spend the money and find out it does not help or that I have made an incorrect choice. They and Serta were purchased by an investment group in 2016. They haven’t made a mattress worth buying since. Unfortunately, after three weeks, my husband and I are both convinced that it is too firm for us side as sleepers.
