Hi Pete,
I want to find a good mattress for relieving fibromyalgia pain. I bought a Sleep Number after the salesperson told me it would be good for relieving my fibromyalgia pain. Was I misled! What a joke that was! WORST BED EVER!!!! After reading some of your blog posts, I believe you can help me. I look forward to your recommendation! Thanks, Ursula Hi Ursula, Unusual name! I have a cousin with that name. Everyone calls her Cubby. The problem with your choice in mattress is twofold. The memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat, allowing you to sink into a still bag of air. The right bed for you starts with an individually pocketed coil system for contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine, while also relieving pressure points at the hip and shoulder. (Keep in mind that fibromyalgia is a surface condition. You can ignore the fact that the inside of your body requires some degree of firm support. To ignore that for the sake of the softness needed for your fibromyalgia will result in back pain…just making matters worse.) Mattresses like The Williams Kingston Plush and the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss…both are excellent quality, using the aforementioned pocketed coil system and both use Pure, Organic & Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery. And, both are currently on sale. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes: setup in your bedroom and removal of all packaging materials and removal of your old mattress. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress comes with ups delivery to the front door, but comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Here are links to each of those mattresses: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 While both of the mattresses are comfortable, dealing with fibromyalgia can take the question of comfort to a whole other level. Add a soft mattress topper will, more than likely, be necessary. Soft Latex will provide long lasting additional comfort. The best value in latex toppers comes from Latex for Less. I recommend 3” Soft, and a cover to go with it. Here’s the link for that: Latex for Less Mattress Toppers https://www.latexforless.com/products/latex-topper?variant=134346899481&sscid=71k8_rmsu0&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Fibromyalgia tends to be a progressive condition. If your condition worsens or is already far advanced, then a latex topper may not be enough. Under these conditions, you’ll want to include the PlushBeds Alternative Down Mattress Topper. It is incredibly soft…much more durable than real down but not as long lasting as latex. Having a soft latex topper as a base for this topper is still recommended. PlushBeds Alternative Down Mattress Topper https://www.plushbeds.com/products/alternative-down-bed-topper?sscid=71k8_rmssu&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051&variant=32001051787362 You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height and color. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well. Hi Pete,
I am looking for a mattress for a 6 year old girl. Please advise as to what you recommend. Thank you, Rich Hi Rich, Best option…individually pocketed coils, for maintaining proper spinal alignment throughout her growth years, and Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery for long lasting surface comfort…without any chemicals to worry about. And, you don’t have to spend a lot for it. Best Value: The Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress in Medium. (Medium-Firm, if she’s big for her age) This mattress comes with a 90 Night Trial Period. My son is 11 years old. Are memory foam mattresses good for him? What do you recommend, soft or firm? Thank you, Karen Hi Karen, Memory foam isn’t good for anyone. It wears quickly, sleeps hot and you certainly don’t want to expose your son to the chemical off gassing. Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals. Some, of which, are highly toxic. A body requires firm support and a comfortable surface to sleep well. A growing body will benefit from the independent suspension type of support provided by an individually pocketed coil system, which maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine and continually adjusts to the changing size of a growing child. It’s at this age, when your son will begin to put on weight…not long before he’s fully grown. There are two mattresses that I recommend: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress, which comes with White Glove Delivery that includes Removal of the Old Mattress. Or, The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. In Medium if he’s average size, Medium Firm if he’s already a large boy. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Both mattresses use a pocketed coil & Pure, Organic & Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery. Long lasting, no sleeping hot and no chemicals to off gas. Both are currently on sale. He has requested my assistance in procuring one of the following: Sealy Princeton Soft Euro Pillowtop Mattress TEMPUR-Adapt Medium Mattress We are open to alternative brands and models. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response. Jeff Hi Jeff, We sell nothing with memory foam in it. We do sell mattresses imported from Italy with memo form foam. I slept on a Mira Luma ll plush mattress for a week at hunting camp and fell in love with the bed. I bought a new king bed a year ago and I hate it. It wasn't cheap. Is there a mattress out there that would come close to the Mira? I get really hot at night and sleep with a fan on. Thank you, Sharon Hi Sharon, The Mira Luma is an old, discontinued mattress. What most people hate about so many of today’s mattresses, is the memory foam upholstery that’s so widely used. Memory foam is the only one of the foams that’s temperature sensitive. It softens as it warms from your body’s heat, and then it reflects that heat back to you. All memory foams wear quickly and most off gas the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made. Overall, a horrible product to totally avoid. Latex, conversely, has been the best upholstery material for the last 100+ years. An individually pocketed coil system to provide firm, contouring support that’s designed to maintain the natural alignment of your body and spine, that’s upholstered with soft pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex is your best option. Long lasting. No sleeping hot. No memory foam. I highly recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. My husband and I are both overweight, and we both have back problems. I am looking for the best of the best mattress I can find. We need a king size that’s firm, comfortable and long lasting. I get confused and frustrated reading so many mixed reviews. Price is not a factor. Sleeping well without back pain is a factor. What do you recommend? Thanks, Lilith Hi Lilith, My wife and I are in the same boat as the two of you. While shopping at the industry trade shows, we came across the Natura of Canada Greenspring line of mattresses. I was so impressed by the high quality of the components, we decided to start selling them…and bought their Ultra Plush model for our home. That was more than 10 years ago, and our mattress still feels like new. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. The coil count is higher than any other brand. I had been diagnosed with DDD, bulging and herniated discs, about 20 years ago. Since sleeping on this mattress, I sleep and wake without back pain. Due to the high quality of the components, all four of their choices of comfort are firmer than they sound. I recommend the Ultra Plush for a nice balance of firm support and surface comfort. That and the longevity are well proven. These mattresses come with White Glove Delivery, which includes setup in your bedroom and removal of all packaging materials. Here’s a link to that line of mattresses. Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattresses https://www.themattressexpert.com/natura_mattresses.html#/ You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. We have an old Sealy SpringFree Beachside Latex Mattress. We bought a twin XL for son to grow up on. Now need a queen for his grad school apartment. Our son is 6’ 5”, 250 Lbs! What mattress today is most comparable? Thanks, Simon Hi Simon, The Sealy Beachside was a fantastic mattress. You couldn’t have chosen a better mattress for a child to grow up on. It’s lasted an extremely long time and provided him with excellent support. Sealy hasn’t maked anything like that, since being purchased by Tempurpedic, back in 2013. There is, however, a mattress that made very much the same. On the advice of the salesman, I got a Tempur-Pedic mattress hoping it will cure the problem. However, that has not happened.
What went wrong? What do you recommend? Thanks, Cal Hi Cal, Memory Foam, the upholstery material used by Tempur-Pedic, is where you went wrong. Salespeople push it, as if it were the best thing since sliced bread…the be all to end all…solving all your problems. Memory foam is, in fact, the worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s a temperature sensitive material that softens after reacting to your body’s heat…allowing the heavier parts of your body to sink further than your extremities. The result? Your body is no longer in its proper alignment. Back pain increases. Extremities go numb. Avoiding any mattress upholstered with memory foam is key. But there’s more: While there are better foams from which to choose, no all foam mattress will provide the pushback support a damaged back requires. An individually pocketed coil system will maintain the natural alignment of your body and spine. THIS, more than anything else, is the key to relieving chronic back pain. A mattress like this that’s upholstered with Natural Latex, will provide long ladder relief, as latex being the most resilient upholstery material…ever. I highly recommend the same mattress my wife and I sleep on at home. I have had a very bad back for more than 20 years. We’ve had our mattress for 10+ years. In all this time, I sleep and wake without back pain. We’ve sold a countless number of these mattresses to people who suffer from this type of pain…All experienced relief. The Natura of Canada Greenspring Mattress comes in 4 choices of comfort, with the Ultra Plush model being the most comfortable. Due to the high quality of the components, all are firmer than they sound. We have the ultra plush at home. It is not a soft mattress. As old as ours is, it’s still like new with each of us weighing more than 200. These mattresses come with White Glove Delivery Delivery includes: setup in your bedroom and removal of all packaging materials. What mattress do you recommend for a 350 lb,. 6ft man who wants a long lasting twin-xl due to space, very firm? Thanks, Bubba Hi Bubba, The highest quality mattress that’s also extremely firm, is the Natura of Canada Greenspring in Firm. There are 4 choices of comfort and all are firmer than they sound…firmer than other brand mattresses with the same firmness designations. For instance: my wife and I, each exceeding 200 lbs., have been sleeping on the Ultra Plush model for more than 10 years…still in like new condition.
