Hi Pete, What queen mattress would you recommend for my husband and I? I have MS, multiple sclerosis, and wake up every morning with a very stiff, painful back. I have a herniated disc that typically doesn't bother me during the day, but that may be more responsible for the morning back pain than the MS. I weigh 157 and my husband does too. He has no complaints with his back or with the 15-year-old mattress we have now. But I feel it's gotten more uncomfortable over the years and now feels really hard. I sleep on my side (usually my right side). My husband sleeps on his back and has no problems. We’re replacing our expensive, pillow-top mattress that is now 15 years old. I can see where it sags in the middle on my side. We weigh 140/147 lbs, respectively. A friend warned me to stay away from any mattress with memory foam. She said that when she turns over at night, the foam doesn’t adjust quickly enough to match her body shape and she feels uncomfortable. We can afford a high quality bed but I don't know what to get. What would you suggest? Thanks, Patricia Hi Patricia, Your friend is right about that, but there are several more reasons why a memory foam mattress is a bad choice. Because it doesn’t respond quickly to you changing positions, you tend to wake… disrupting your sleep. Memory foam tends to wear quickly. Memory foam is temperature sensitive. It absorbs your body’s heat and reflects that heat back to you, causing your to sleep hot. Worst of all, it off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. It’s just a horrible product… the worst upholstery material ever invented. Also, this business of being able to afford an expensive mattress is something I'd suggest keeping to yourself when you go shopping. If you try it once, you'll notice a change in the behavior of most salespeople...kinda like the giddy anticipation of an easy kill from a pack of hyenas. Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration...as far as their behavior is concerned...but not about how they're feeling inside. The upholstery materials are the most expensive part of a mattress. The more padding there is on a mattress, the quicker it will wear out. It's better for you, and your long term comfort, to buy a mattress that provides long lasting support and adding a soft latex topper, which provides excellent comfort that lasts for many years. Then, all you’ll need to replace is the topper when the time comes. You got 15 years from a pillowtop made 15 years ago. You'd be lucky to get 5 from one made today. You're better off avoiding those entirely. You've been out of the market for 15 years. It was about that time when the the industry moguls decided that didn’t want to wait 10 to 15 years for the consumer to be back in the mattress buying market. Since then, mattresses are made to last a much shorter period of time. The thing that they're selling now, is comfort...luxury. There is an immediate solution to your problem without going to the expense of a new mattress. I had it replaced once, after only a month, because the side that I sleep on felt different from the rest of the mattress. It was soft & squishy, whereas the side I don't sleep on was still firm. Now my second one is doing the same thing. And this is not a minor difference; my 7 year old son thinks the difference is severe. It’s a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from the heat your body gives off. As you’ve discovered, it’s incredibly difficult to pick a mattress trying it at a store. Most stores are a sea of memory foam upholstered mattresses. All of the name brands have taken the same turn as S&F. Sealy is also owned by Tempurpedic. The pillowtop part is only part of the problem you’re experiencing. The memory foam upholstery is another reason why your side is sinking in. Even if you exchange it for another S&F mattress without a pillowtop, you’ll be back in the same situation within months. If the store you’re dealing with has mattresses that don’t have any memory foam in them, those would be the ones to consider. 3 years ago, we bought a Simmons Beautyrest Black king mattress. The mattress is sagging in two places. After speaking with the dealer and submitting the required documentation and photos, I received a return e-mail stating that the impressions fall within normal parameters. The store won’t exchange it and we can’t live with it. We sink so far that both of us are experiencing back pain. Do I have any recourse? Memory foam is purposefully designed to do what you’re experiencing… creating a situation where you’re forced to buy a new mattress every few years, rather than the 10-20 years prior to the introduction of memory foam. Not being able to prevail in a warranty claim has created a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer. You have 2 options. Buy a new mattress. You keep recommending that people rotate king mattresses 1/4 turn. This might work for a standard king mattress as they are almost square, but our California king is slightly longer than wide so this is not an option. It is also a mattress that you cannot turn over so when we rotate we just exchange one side for the other and top to bottom, it does very little good. Karen, Hi Karen, The 1/4 turn advice, as you pointed out, only works with the eastern king. If you have a Cal king, I'd think that not being able to to that should be rather obvious. Rotating your mattress is something you do from when your mattress is new, to ensure even wear. If you wait until body impressions become deep, it then does very little good, as you’ve discovered. The Cal king is the worst size to choose for even wear. Head to foot rotation is all you can do with any size (other than eastern king), but in the queen and full, you're sleeping close enough together as to not have a hump develop up the center. Not so in either king size. The center always stays like new.
