Hi Pete,
Love the information on your blog. I’ll make this short. What’s the best mattress at the best price? Thanks, John Hi John, I wish there were a short answer to go with your short question. First off…thee thing to avoid, are mattresses made with memory foam. Those selling them talk about memory foam as if it was the best thing since sliced bread. Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…not to mention the chemical off gassing and sleeping hot side effects. From a salesperson’s point of view, it’s terrific…making you a frequent buyer. From a consumer’s viewpoint, it’s the worst thing ever invented. The best upholstery material is Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex. This has been true for more than the last 100 years. And while latex has always been a lot more expensive, of late, the prices have come down. I have 2 recommendations. Both use an individually pocketed coil system for proper spinal alignment and pure latex upholstery. Basically, they are the same. The difference is in the extended services that are offered. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress (Medium for light to average size people…Medium Firm for heavier people) This mattress ships via UPS…to the front door delivery. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period Here’s the link: The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress This mattress comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packing materials. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. Shown here: https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well. Hi Pete,
My wife and I have been buying and returning memory foam mattresses. We love the way they feel when we get them, but not so after a couple/few months, depending on the model. We’ve also been experiencing sleeping warm and they usually have an unpleasant, chemically smell. We been through this a number of times, never really connecting the problems with the memory foam directly, until finding your blog. So, my question is, are there any memory foam mattresses out there that have that feel that we enjoy, that keeps that feel and without the smell of heat? Thanks, Jason Hi Jason, Yes and no. There are no memory foam mattresses that will satisfy all of your concerns. There are mattresses made with MemoForm Foam. These are made in Italy and have been available in Europe for many years. Magniflex is the brand name…developed by The Magni Family in Italy. They have, recently, opened a manufacturing facility here, in the US. These mattresses perform just the way you want…no chemicals, no off gassing, no odor, no sleeping hot…long lasting, with a 20 year manufacturer’s warranty. All of the comfort of memory foam when new…and staying that way. There are a variety of models from which to choose. Here’s a link to that line of mattresses: https://www.themattressexpert.com/magniflex.html#/ IF YOU LIKE MEMORY FOAM, YOU’LL LOVE MAGNIFLEX!!! I'm trying to replace a mattress equivalent to a Dormia/Classic brand, model number pt1020xxd. It's memory foam, made in 2009. I know there are lots of memory foam options out there just not sure where to start. Any info or suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks, Tonya Hi Tonya, Unfortunately, most of today’s memory foam mattresses are using lower quality memory foam than you’re used to….designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…sleeping hot…and off gassing the toxic chemicals from which most memory foam is made. My recommendation is an Italian company called Magniflex…their MemoForm foam provides all the comfort of quality memory foam without any of the negative side effects. And while they have a manufacturing facility in the US, all of their components are produced in Italy. Here is a link to their line of mattresses: https://www.themattressexpert.com/magniflex.html#/ If You Like Memory Foam, You’ll Love Magniflex Thanks, Pete - TME Delivery is Always Free Online Ordering is Easy & Secure. I've been reading your blog and like the unbiased opinions you give. My wife and I are considering a Stearns and Foster mattress in a California King size. We are both quite tall and slender. We like a firm bed with some cushion to it. We have not bought a new mattress in 12 years, and would like to get the same lifespan again with this purchase! What do you think about the S&F for comfort/support/longevity? Thanks, Jim Hi Jim, S&F was purchased by Tempurpedic 11 years ago. As of January of 2014, everything S&F mattress has been upholstered with memory foam, which is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. Memory foam also off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made and, it tends to cause the user to sleep hot. In short, I’m not a fan of today’s S&F, nor any mattress upholstered with memory foam. We had been a Sealy/S&F dealer prior to Tempurpedic buying them. That purchase sent us to the industry trade shows in search of high quality alternatives. The best we found was Natura of Canada. We decided to home test one of their mattresses. We have been sleeping on the Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush for the past 10+ years…and it’s still in great condition…with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support. The Natural Talalay Latex upholstery provides unparalleled surface comfort that’s not too soft, and the longevity can’t be matched by any other brand. Here’s a link to that mattress, which will give you everything you need and want: https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/natura-greenspring-liberta-ultra-plush/92?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. I am considering buying a Stearns and Foster mattress. Have you had good experiences with this, and how does it compare with some of the other top notch name brands. I am petite and sleep alone. Thanks so much! Lily Hi Lily, You’re assuming that S&F, and the other name brand mattress manufacturers, are "top notch". I remember when they use to be. That hasn't been the case since they were sold. Sealy and S&F in 2013. Simmons and Serta in 2016. None of the makes a mattress today that’s worth buying. The new owners are using memory foam, which is purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…not to mention the chemical off gassing and sleeping hot problems that are commonly associated with memory foam. My recommendation for you is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. Individually pocketed coils ensure proper spinal alignment. The Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex upholstery provides extraordinary and long lasting surface comfort. Here’s a link where you can view that mattress and place your order. I just purchased a new mattress. Does it require a new box spring? The bed frame is one I made with draws under it with a solid plywood top that the mattress sits on. Is that adequate? Thanks, Charles Hi Charles, If your frame is as solid as it sounds, then no…you do not need a boxspring. Thanks, Pete - TME Delivery is Always Free Online Ordering is Easy & Secure. I have a Simmons Beautyrest Felicity Firm. It's in the guest room, & not used very often. I had a friend who complained that it was too hard on her back. My question: Would buying a latex mattress topper add more comfort to someone with a delicate back, and/or a side sleeper? Your help is appreciated. Thank you, Mary Hi Mary, What we all need to sleep well, is firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface. You already have the firm support. The best way to achieve surface comfort is with a Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Soft Latex Topper. Pure latex is the most comfortable and longest lasting. Before you buy one, I recommend Latex for Less. Highest quality and factory direct pricing. 3” is best for the curves of a female body. Thank you for all you do to steer us in the right direction. I need a recommendation for a high quality mattress, but also need it setup and our old mattress removed. We are unable to handle that ourselves. Looking forward to your response. Thanks again, Gillian Hi Gillian, High quality mattresses start with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery…and with No Memory Foam. Getting your old mattress removed has become difficult since the pandemic. However, we do have a mattress for you that includes the service you need. The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress uses a firm, individually pocketed coil system, which is specifically designed to maintain the natural alignment of the body and spine. The Pure Latex upholstery is very comfortable and durable. I’m duly impressed with your depth of knowledge and willingness to share it so freely. I am trying to pick the best mattress for the money. I have low back problems that pinch my spinal cord and are permanent and require a firm mattress. My husband has upper back pain. I have a friend who bought an all latex mattress and is very happy. Is there a certain mattress you would recommend for back issue? Thanks, Robin Hi Robin, Two things to consider. While an all latex mattress is the best, most resilient and most comfortable, of all the foams, no all foam mattress provides the pushback support needed for a damaged back. The pinching in your back is not the spine, but a nerve. As the discs in your back wear, it’s the nerve that gets pinched. THIS is what causes pain and more serious conditions, like sciatica. To relieve that pinching and the resulting pain, you need to maintain the natural alignment of your body and spine. The best type of support to achieve this, is an individually pocketed coil system. For comfort and longevity, pure latex upholstery is best. It’s important to get a mattress using “Pure Latex”. I make that distinction because there are a lot of mattresses out there that use latex foam made in China. China is adding clay to mix when processing their latex. It cheapens the final product and greatly shortens the longevity. Clay is a natural substance, so they are sold as “All Natural Latex”. While all natural, it isn’t pure. Only pure latex lasts for many years. And while a bit more expensive initially, it’s much less expensive in the long term and a much better value for your dollar. The mattress I recommend for you is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss. This mattress uses the individually pocketed coil system you need for back pain relief and the pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex you want for comfort and longevity. It comes in a choice of firmness. For you, the Medium Firm is better. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Click on this link to view that mattress and place your order. For a two and half year old girl, what style would be the best: firm, plush firm, etc? And, what about a pillowtop? Thanks, Kathy Hi Kathy, Small children have bones that are still growing and forming. A firmer mattress using an individually pocketed coil system will keep everything in place, so that the skeletal system forms as it should. Pillowtop mattress are too soft at this age and one of the major causes of premature wear. You don’t want that for her. When she’s older and begins to develop into a more womanly shape, she will then need that softer surface feel. You can do that by adding a 2” Soft Latex Mattress Topper. Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex is best. I recommend the Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress in Medium-Firm. When she’s older, add a Latex for Less Topper. Here are links to each of those products.
