Hi Pete,
Your honest advice is the best I've found out there in the impossible mattress world. I suffer with lower back pain, a bulging discs and hip pain. I am a mostly a side sleeper. I was considering a S&F mattress that I tried in a store. It felt great. I almost fell asleep after lying on it for 10 minutes. I see you suggest getting tight top and purchasing a topper seperately. All the posts I have seen are from resent purchases. Which mattress would you suggest for lasting support? Best Regards, Dianne Hi Dianne, Stearns & Foster had been considered “The Cadillac of the Industry” for many decades until 10+ years ago. S&F had been owned by Sealy for many years, until 2013 when Sealy was purchased by Tempurpedic. They also acquired S&F in the deal. Since then, the upholstery materials switched to memory foam. Today, S&F makes nothing worth buying. Memory foam has proven to be the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented…purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing…not to mention the chemical off gassing, sleeping hot and the sinking in that actually causes back pain due to causing your body to become misaligned. Memory foam is extremely misleading. It comfortable at first. But loses its resiliency in very short order. You’ll be wasting your money. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress is my recommendation. The individually pocketed coils maintain the natural alignment of the body and spine. The Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery provides long lasting comfort. Hi Pete,
My husband and I sleep on the third floor of our house which is accessed by a tight staircase with low head height that you can only fit a full size regular type mattress up. We're going to finally treat ourselves to a bigger mattress and don't know what type is best. We like a firm but comfortable mattress and are planning on forgoing the box springs and building a platform to set the new mattress on. We don't know whether it would be better to go for 2 twin mattresses on the same platform or to look at memory foam or latex which we assume could be folded over to get up our low head height stairs? We have the space for either a queen or king once it gets up to our room. From what I'm reading it seems like latex is the better choice? Do you think the twin bed approach would work - if so do you have a recommendation for firm mattress. If we go the latex route, what would you recommend for $2,000? Is solid plywood better than slats for the platform? Thanks, Elsa Hi Elsa, A solid plywood base is better for heavy people. It also makes the mattress you use with it feel firmer. But for most people, the slatted platform beds are perfectly fine. In the old days, making a 3rd floor delivery with a tight staircase was all but impossible for a queen or king size mattresses, due to the steel perimeter edge support and the Bonnell coil system of mattresses made years ago. Today, almost no mattresses have either of those things. I recommend a mattress that uses a pocketed coil system, which maintains the natural ailment of the body and spine. A mattress that that uses Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic upholstery that will give you many years of support and comfort. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress is my recommendation. All I can say is, thank God I found your blog with so much great advice. I was on the verge of dropping 2k on a pillowtop mattress. I’d like to buy two mattresses, delivered to Louisiana. After reading much of the Q&A on your blog, I have narrowed down the specs: I need a nice tight top King mattress set and I’d like to spend no more than $2000, if possible. My wife and I would like something mid range with regard to firmness. I prefer firm and she likes plush. Can you recommend something that would fit those specs? Also, I need a tight top queen mattress set for the guest room. I’d like to spend about $1000 on the queen mattress. Same specs as the king with regard to firmness: somewhere in the middle. Please let me know if you need more info from me. I really appreciate your taking the time to help me and the many others who benefitted from your blog. Thanks, Josh Hi Josh, For your king, I recommend the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. The pocketed coils and Organic Latex upholstery provide all the support and comfort you’ll need for many years to come. The Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress is similarly made but not as expensively. This is a great option for guests and children. Click on each of these links for those mattresses. A friend has a Stearns and Foster latex mattress, they’ve had for many years. I was able to try it out. It was super comfy. I’d like to get a mattress like that in king size. Do you have this mattress? Thanks, Jack Hello Jack, S&F hasn’t made a latex mattress since 2014, after having been purchased by Tempurpedic. First, thank you for your blog. It has certainly helped make some sense out of all of the disinformation out there. Second, my wife and I are looking to buy our first new mattress and could use your guidance. We need a queen bed and are comfortable spending something in the $1500 to $2000 range. We are both relatively young, so no special considerations or specific problems, but we would like a decent amount of support balanced with a bit of softness. You've convinced me to stay away from the pillowtops and all foam. I'm currently thinking that a firm tight top and a topper would be the way to go. What would you recommend that would fit the bill? Thanks again, Austin Hi Austin, There are best buys at various price points. At yours, the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress @ $1599 is your best buy, providing excellent firm, contouring support that maintains proper spinal alignment and greatly reduces motion transfer. A Latex for Less 2" Organic Latex Topper runs only $259. Together, they’ll provide you many years of supportive, comfortable sleep. We recommend using a waterproof mattress protector. Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will add to the longevity. Rotate your new mattress once a month for the first year and once every 3 months thereafter to ensure even wear, which enhances the comfort life of any mattress. We recently purchased the Tempur-Pedic mattress, but unfortunately, it appears I'm one of the few people who can't sleep comfortably on this mattress. My mid-section begins to sag in the middle and causes lower back pain every morning. My wife and I have been sleeping on this mattress for about 45 days now, so we're still within the return policy time frame. I'm a tall guy (6'3") of average weight (200lbs). My wife is 5'10" and about the same weight as me. She initially had back pain but eventually got used to it, until recently. Have you had similar complaints from other people regarding Tempurpedic mattresses? If so, what bed did they switch to? I've been going back to the mattress store to try other beds. We only get 1 re-select, so I have to find something I can rest well on for years to come. I'm torn between getting a standard spring mattress or a memory foam/spring combination mattress. I like the feel of the memory foam but am worried about the durability over time. I'm disappointed because I REALLY wanted to like the Tempur-Pedic. I could use some sagely advice before I make a final decision. Thanks, Michael Michael, You're not alone. And there’s a lot more than just a few of you. There are tons of complaints about that type of mattress, usually coming after the trial period has expired. You’re one of the luckier ones. Memory foam, in general, is not all it's cracked up to be. If I were you, I'd draw from your current experience and avoid memory foam altogether. It’s the memory foam that allows you to sink, which causes your body to be misaligned, which is causing your back pain. An individually pocketed coil mattress that’s upholstered with latex or polyurethane…anything but memory foam, will be your best option. At TME, we offer NO mattresses that are upholstered with memory foam. https://www.themattressexpert.com/#/ In lieu of Tempur-Pedic, we feature Magniflex…a superior mattress, by far. The KLUFT Mattresses over $10k…are they really worth the price? Specifically this one: https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/kluft-signature-rose-ultra-plush-mattress-collection-100-exclusive?ID=5109593&CategoryID=3865 Still searching for a great mattress... Thanks, Natalie Hi Natalie, A mattress is a utilitarian product, specifically designed to provide you with a good night’s sleep….not that most of today’s mattresses do that for as long as they once did. But still, no one needs to spend that kind of money to get a mattress that does give you a quality night’s sleep & the longevity you’d expect. Thanks, Pete ************* Pete, I agree. What would you recommend, from your selection, that is a luxury firm top of the line made with the best of the best materials and won't sag on me in two years time? Natalie Natalie, a mattress is made of pressure sensitive materials. How well it wears over time, depends on the quality of the materials used and the pressure being exerted upon it. “Top of the line” mattresses were never a good value, as they have too much upholstery, which is more easily compressed. Top line mattresses are often sold as a luxury product. And while you do need enough upholstery to provide comfort, indulging in the industry’s attempts to sell you a utilitarian product as a luxury item always results in a shorter lifespan. Before recommending an appropriate mattress, I have some questions. What are the sizes, (heights and weights), of the people using the mattress? What are the ages of the people? What physical ailments are there to address, if any? What are you sleeping on now? What’s wrong with it? Pete ************* Pete, Our sizes: 5'9 - 150 lbs 5'6 - 130 lbs Out ages: Both 44 Physical ailments: No physical ailments but my husband often complains of shoulder and back pain after sleeping on our mattress: BISCAYNE BEDDING TAVERNIER 14" PLUSH MATTRESS My husband says it’s awful. It dips and sags and is not firm enough. He wakes up aches and pains, and he sleeps hot. He doesn’t like it Natalie Natalie, I don’t blame him. What’s wrong with your mattress is what’s wrong with most mattresses being made these days…the memory foam. While promoted as the best thing since sliced bread, it’s actually the worst upholstery material ever invented…specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. Memory foam is the only temperature sensitive upholstery material. It softens as it warms from the heat your bodies give off, causing you to sink into it. At first, it’s fairly comfortable. But, it’s not very resistant. After only a short time, you’re sinking much to far, throwing off the natural alignment of your body and spine…causing pain. The other side effects are: sleeping hot and creating the inability to change position without half waking up to do it. Some of the memory foam is cured or plant based, but most is chemical based and not cured, which results in toxic chemical off gassing evidenced by an unpleasant odor…especially when new. Your ages and sizes mitigate in your favor. My recommendation is for a mattress using an individually pocketed coil system. These coils are the body’s support…providing an upward, independent suspension type of support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. Pure, hypoallergenic and organic latex (not made in China) is and has been the best upholstery material for more than 100 years. The mattress I’m recommending for you is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss, which you can access through this link: Hybrid Latex Mattress - The Luxury Bliss plushbeds.com If you have an old boxspring, that will need to be replaced. If it’s reasonably new, or if you have a platform bed, you won’t. If you do, here’s a link to an excellent choice: Foundations and Adjustable Bases themattressexpert.com It’s important to keep a mattress clean and dry, which enhances longevity. I recommend waiting until you’ve slept on your new mattress before deciding if you even want to add a topper. I weigh 230 lbs. What kind of mattress do I need that does not get indentations in 2 yrs. Thanks, Anton Hi Anton, A mattress developing body impressions is the nature of the beast. The upholstery that provides the surface comfort is pressure sensitive. The more weight applied, the deeper the impression. Besides body weight, there’s the quality of the upholstery to consider. The softer and less resistant the upholstery, the deeper the impression. To minimize the body impression and the frequency of having to replace a mattress, think in terms of a sleep system, rather than just a mattress. Start with a mattress that uses pure, organic latex. Latex has always been the most resilient upholstery material. But at your weight, add a removable latex topper to your new mattress. The topper will absorb much of your body weight, which preserves the mattress. Over time, you’ll replace only the topper, as needed, and not the mattress. By doing this, your new mattress will last for many years. The mattress I’m recommending is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss.
