We have navigated some of the mattress confusion thanks to your site and dealing with some helpful and some incompetent sales people! We want to purchase a queen size mattress for a 2nd home. Although I am concerned about the back and hip issues I have, it is a bed that will only be slept in for 2-3 months a year and not always by us. First, thank you for your blog. It has certainly helped make some sense out of all of the disinformation out there. Second, my wife and I are looking to buy our first new mattress and could use your guidance. We need a high quality queen mattress and foundation and are comfortable spending something in the $2000 range. We are both relatively young, so no special considerations or specific problems, but we would like a decent amount of support balanced with a bit of softness. You've convinced me to stay away from the pillowtops and memory foam, and I'm currently thinking that a firm tight top and a latex topper would be the way to go. I've really enjoyed reading your blog and the feedback you give is really helpful and informative! We had a Simmons Beautyrest mattress for 15 years. We recently bought in to the Tempurpedic craze and purchased a mattress from their "Cloud" line. It was like sleeping on a marshmallow. It made our backs hurt even more and left us extremely hot all night. We are now considering going back to a Simmons Beautyrest pillow top as it seems like it will give us a good balance of soft and firm. My husband is a side sleeper with lower back problems and I am a side sleeper that ends up on my back at the end of the night. My back issues are really between my shoulder blades. Just got a new mattress and let it air out for a few days and it still smells like chemicals, making it hard to breathe! Is there anything that can be done about this? Thanks, Joyce Ann Hi Joyce Ann, Only memory foam does that. Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals. Some of which, are highly toxic. The gasses from those chemicals get trapped inside the cells of the memory foam when it’s made. Those gases are released when the cells break open with use. It won’t fully air out unless you break open the cells of the foam. My recommendation is to return that mattress and exchange it for a mattress that has no memory foam in it. The chemical off gassing is only one of the negatives about memory foam. The other negatives become apparent with use….sleeping hot, sinking in, back pain and numbness of the extremities…causing the most common complaints. If you unable to return it, walk on it…on every inch of it. This will break open all of the cells, releasing the trapped gases. The smell should then begin to dissipate within a few days. My boyfriend and I purchased a new Stearns and Foster luxury firm pillow top mattress about 3 weeks ago. The bed is at my house and he generally only stays over on weekends. Im heavier, about 275 pounds. The side of the mattress that I sleep on already feels much, much squishier than the side that doesnt get slept on as often, the other side still feels nice and firm. The memory foam upholstery is the main source of your problem. Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body’s heat. It’s not very resistant to start, so it doesn’t take long before you’re sinking into it much too much. Be sure to exchange that mattress for one with no memory foam. My 12 year old granddaughter has been having back problems since February. Physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, two MRI's, x-rays and numerous orthopedic visits have not found the cause. She often cries in her sleep with pain. She complains of hip pain but her current chiropractor suspects a disc problem with pain radiating to her hips because its not always in the same place. She's currently sleeping on a bunk bed mattress and I want to buy two new mattresses for her and her sister (14 yrs) for Christmas. They are both thin, active and otherwise very healthy girls. What mattress would you suggest? Do they need a box spring and frame instead of their current bunk beds. I've been looking for the "old" mattresses that used to be very comfortable and last for about 20 years! Back in 2000 I had a mattress like that. For the past several years, I've only found mattresses with memory foam...which is too hot to sleep on, and basically a piece of crap! Why don't they make mattresses like they used to?
