My wife and I just bought a memory foam mattress. First night!, it sleeps hot. I got on the internet, which is where I found your blog. After an hour or two, I learned that a latex mattress topper will solve the heat problem. The problem I still have is being able to afford it. I’ve been following your blog for years, now. It’s very interesting. I’ve read, quite often, about your opposition to memory foam. A couple of months ago, I went to a local mattress store. I told the salesman about you and what you have to say about memory foam. He told me that you, either, don’t know what you’re talking about or just trying to sell what you have. He then went into great detail about why memory foam is the latest, greatest mattress padding on the market. He was rather convincing. My wife insisted that we buy it. Long story even longer, I chose to believe him over you. And, I wanted to make my wife happy. Now, only a couple of months later, I have learned “the hard way”, that you’d been right all along. I am now getting ready to fight with him for a refund, that he has told me is not available. It's a Stearns and Foster Plush King Mattress. It’s now noticeably less comfortable. The memory foam on top of the mattress is where the problem lies. Promoted as high quality, memory foam is actually the worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s a low resiliency, temperature sensitive material that reacts to your body heat. (Which didn’t have a chance to happen while trying it in the store.) As it warms, it softens, allowing your body to sink so far, as to throw off body’s natural alignment. The heavier parts of the body sink the furthest, which leaves your arms and legs higher. Blood circulation to those areas is reduced, causing numbness in the extremities. And, as if all that weren’t bad enough, it reflects your body heat back to you, causing you to sleep hot. And to add insult to injury, memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made. Several of the chemicals they use are carcinogenic… 61 chemicals, in all. I need a mattress that can hold a 200 lb. woman with fibromyalgia. But, it also needs to be long lasting to replace a 16 year old pillow top double sided Stearns & Foster mattress. After much research, I've decided the Natura Greenspring Mattress. We're coming from a very old "luxury firm" Stearns & Foster, and it sounds like this is a best option to replace this discontinued mattress. I have a Tempur-Pedic mattress that I'm not able to sleep on. I am a heavy gal, over 300 lbs. and I sink into it and have difficulty turning over. It hurts my back. What you have, is among the very best that Simmons ever made. A Cadillac among mattresses… pun intended. There’s only one mattress, that I know of, that will satisfy your sense of quality. It happens to be the same mattress that my wife and I have at home. Ours is 11 years old and still in like new condition, with each of us weighing more than 200 lbs. Yours has 1000 coils (queen size coil count) Ours has 1020. What’s more, the steel is tempered. Simmons never used tempered steel. Instead, they pre-compressed their coils. (9” coil in a 7” pocket). The upholstery in yours is mostly chemical based polyurethane and a little latex. Ours is mostly latex with a little plant based polyurethane. The mattress to which I’m referring is the Natura Greenspring Ultra Plush. (Not as soft as it sounds, due to the quality and resiliency of the components) Unlike most of today’s mattresses, there’s no memory foam in ours. There’s none in yours, either… which accounts for the longevity. And, unlike most of today’s mattresses, it takes a while to arrive (several weeks) This mattress comes with white glove delivery… in a box the size of the mattress, as opposed to being shrink wrapped, rolled and boxed for ups delivery. If you have a platform bed, then all you’ll need is the mattress. If you have a 30 year old boxspring, that will need to be replaced. We need to replace our really old queen mattress and box springs, but we’re dealing with a couple of issues: 1) We are around 200 lb. people, around the same height. We are both side sleepers. 2) We each have back pain due to DDD, degenerated disc disease. I suppose I am looking for something of quality, (resistant to sagging), that will address the pain issues.
