I have almost constant back pain. I’m looking for the best mattress to relieve that pain. I bought a mattress from a store that has memory foam in it. The salesman said it would relieve my back pain. I seem to be in a tough spot. I’m a big guy, 6’ 250 lbs. I have a bad back with a herniated disc. I need a mattress with support on the firm side. Thanks, Jack Good Morning Jack, I do have a solution and one that’s long term, lasting for many years. It turns out that my wife and I are in the same boat…a similar boat. We aren’t willing both heavy, but with the same conditions. My back has a herniated disc, but also a bulging disc and degenerative disc disease. My wife has your wife’s hip problem, which seems to be fairly common among females. Over the years, we’ve tried a number of mattresses with varying degrees of success. The last one we bought has worked so well for both of us, that we stopped experimenting. That was almost 11 years ago…and our nearly 11 year old mattress is still in great condition with no plans to replace it. The same one will work just as well for the two of you. I’m a long time customer whose most recent purchase was a mattress about 2 years ago. I’m back looking for something to address my neck pain. My MRI results came to me electronically and of course the doc will explain things, but my initial neck xray (which is what led to MRI) shows severe arthritis and bone spurs and degenerative disc and I always heard that a body pillow stabilizes the spine so I was wondering which one you’d recommend. Thanks, Mark Hi Mark, The body impressions that have formed on your dad’s current and previous mattresses are likely due to the memory foam used in most of today’s mattresses. However, there is another possible cause. If you did not replace an old boxspring when these mattresses were purchased, that could also be a reason for the impressions, as any new mattress will conform to the weak spots in an old boxspring. If you are using an old boxspring, itwill need to be replaced. If what’s supporting the mattress was replaced at the time the new mattresses were purchased, they most likely do not need replacing. Before buying a new mattress, there may be a way to salvage a reasonably new mattress that’s worn poorly due to memory foam. While made as a one sided mattress, the flip side is usable. Flip the mattress over, which will put the memory foam on the bottom and his body closer to the support system. It’s a trick that works often enough to try, which ends up saving a lot of money. The flip side is likely to be too firm to sleep on comfortably. So add whatever you have handy to cushion it…like a comforter. If the experiment is successful, then all you need to buy is a soft latex topper.
