Hi Pete,
I currently have a 4 yr old Simmons Beautyrest plush top mattress, and it is sagging way too much. Me & my wife are waking up with aches and the mattress looks like we slept in a pit when seen in the morning. I have a long time lower back pain as well as shoulder pain and it got aggravated after the mattress started to sink. I wanted to go for Simmons extra firm mattress with no luxury or plush tops so they would last long and also relieves me from my pain. My wife is pregnant and we are looking for your advice on what would be the ideal choice of Simmons mattress for our situation. Please suggest... Regards, Randal Hi Randal, The problem you’re having isn’t due to the plush top. It’s the memory foam in the mattress that’s allowing your bodies to sink into it, which throws off the natural alignment of your spine. Simmons was sold in 2016 to an investment group that’s using memory foam in every mattress they make…for the express purpose of making you a frequent buyer. Nothing Simmons makes today is worth buying. The same is true for all of the, so called, name brands. That same investment group also bought Serta in 2016. Sealy and S&F were sold in 2013. All are using memory foam. To relive your back pain, an individually pocketed coiled mattress that’s upholstered with pure, organic latex foam will provide the support your back requires with surface comfort that doesn’t allow you to sink. Latex upholstery feels like you’re floating. Very comfy. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium is my recommendation, providing everything you need for support, comfort and longevity. This mattress comes with a 100 Night Trial The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress https://www.plushbeds.com/products/12-luxury-bliss-natural-latex-mattress-with-encased-coils?variant=31705061490786&sscid=71k8_pjs8o&utm_source=share-a-sale&utm_campaign=4342051 Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and will enhance the longevity of your mattress and keep it odor free. Hi Pete,
I currently am sleeping on a Tempur-Pedic Cloud. I have degenerative disc disease which has resulted in immobility in lower back involving also involving right SI joint. I start out sleeping on my back and notice that when I shift or move, I feel movement in my back which results in pain. It feels like I'm sleeping in a bowl of dough! My husband loves the bed, but I find myself relocating to the guest bedroom. It feels better on my lower back, but makes my shoulders and neck stiff. I am interested to see what type of mattress you would recommend for these issues. Thanks, Janice Hi Janice, There is no worse choice of mattress than one upholstered with memory foam for people with back problems. Contrary to all the sales hype, it only makes matters worse. A mattress using an individually pocketed coil system will maintain proper spinal alignment. One that’s upholstered with pure, organic latex will provide comfort that won’t allow you to sink. Latex provides the unique feeling that you’re floating. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium is an excellent choice and comes with a 100 Night Trial. Question: Im a 78 old male 160 lbs. I have osteoarthritis and a replaced knee and a rebuilt ankle. I sleep on my side and now sleep on a Serta pillowtop mattress. What does the expert recommend for me to buy? Not expensive! My present mattress is not old and has deep body impressions. Thanks for a reply, Rick Hi Rick, Serta doesn’t make a good mattress because of the memory foam. Deep body impressions under a 160 lb. man is unacceptable. My recommendation is for a PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress. The individually pocketed coils provide contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the body and spine. The Soft, Pure, Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery provides unique comfort, like you’re floating. It’s extremely comfortable without being too soft and it won’t allow you to sink into it…NO Body Impressions. This mattress comes in Medium and Medium Firm. For your size with osteoarthritis, I suggest the Medium. This mattress is, currently, On Sale and comes with a 100 Night Trial. Click on this link to view that mattress and place your order. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. I am a 21 year old female, about 90 pounds, and have a long term boyfriend (about 150 lbs) who sleeps with me every night. I also have mild sclerosis and irritated back nerves/back pain. I’m looking into getting a new queen sized mattress, but have no idea where to start. All the mattresses I’ve had, have not worn well. How can I tell what will be comfortable in the long run on my back? Are there any specific mattresses that seem suited to my needs? Thanks, Rita Hi Rita, Your lack of body weight mitigates in your favor, in terms of expense. A pocketed coil mattress that’s upholstered with soft latex it your best choice. The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium will work for you, rather nicely. The soft, pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery is extremely comfortable without being too soft…creating the feeling that you’re floating. The individually pocketed coils provide firm, contouring support that maintains the natural alignment of the spine….No More Back Pain. Due to the overall quality, this mattress will remain like new for many years. You can expect decades of supportive, comfortable sleep. I want to buy a Leggett Platt adjustable bed and for a mattress I like. The mattress is a Stearns and Foster Ultra Firm. It is wrapped coils with a foam edge. I don't know about wire around the coils. Will this mattress work with the adjustable bed? Thanks, Lou Hi Lou, That’s an older, extremely well made mattress. The foam edge support is very strong. Due to that, and that the mattress is an ultra firm, I doubt that it will work easily on an adjustable bed base for anything more than slight elevation of the head and foot. If you stand at the foot end of the mattress and lift, I think you’ll find that the mattress will remain somewhat stiff. Getting it to bend will require your body weight…and again, you’re not likely to get more than a slight bend. There is no border wire in that mattress, so you don’t have to worry about damaging it, should you decide to buy that base. We recently purchased a Simmons Beautyrest mattress. I believe I may be allergic to it. I wake up with cold symptoms and a headache in the AM. I saw a post that someone else had the same issue. Is there anything in the mattress that could cause this? Thanks, Nathalie Hi Natalie, There most certainly is! The memory foam upholstery consists of 61 different chemicals. Some of those chemicals are highly toxic. The chemical gasses are trapped in the cellular structure. Your body weight causes the cells to break open, releasing those gasses into the air. The chemical smell is more than just unpleasant. Those gasses attack your respiratory system, causing the symptoms that you’re experiencing. Thanks, Pete - TME ***** Hi Pete, Thank you for this information. You’re right about the smell. I figured it was just a “new mattress” odor that would go away eventually. What can I do about this, if anything? Thanks again, Nathalie Hi Nathalie, Since every living breathing being in your home is affected by it, the best thing is to send it back for a mattress that has no memory foam in it. If that’s not possible, do what you can to break open all of the cells in that foam and air out the mattress…and the bedroom. Putting weight on every inch of the mattress will achieve that. But that’s not the end of the story. Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as is warms from your body’s heat. At first, it feels good. But, memory foam isn’t very resilient. In a relatively short time, your body will begin to sink too far, throwing off the natural alignment of your body and spine, which usually results in back pain. So, trading that mattress for one without memory foam is still your best option. Thanks, Pete - TME ***** Wow, Pete! I had no idea! We never had a problem with our old Beautyrest, which is why we bought this one when the old mattress wore out. What changed? I believe I can return this mattress. If I can return it for a refund, what mattress do you have that you would recommend for a couple of plus size people? Thanks again for your incredibly helpful responses. Nathalie Hi Nathalie, All of the name brand mattresses have been sold. The new owners changed their upholstery to the same memory foam that’s in your mattress. Memory foam insures that their customers will need to replace their mattress much more frequently than in previous times. Their profits have soared, as a result. Their focus in all about profit and no longer about quality, as it had been with the original owners. Since they hype memory foam as the best thing since sliced bread, most consumers are unaware…unless they stumbled across my blog and others like it. Sealy and S&F were sold in 2013 Simmons and Serta sold in 2016 Nothing that any of them make today are worth buying. My wife and I are large people, each weighing more than 200 lbs. Our mattress is more than 10 years old and is still in great condition. Needless to say, it has no memory foam. The individually pocketed coils is the highest coil count available and, the primary upholstery is all natural Talalay Latex with a little plant based polyurethane. No Off Gassing. So, that mattress is what I’d recommend for the two of you. Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress. Due to the high quality of the components, it’s not as soft as it sounds…comfortable, but certainly, not too soft for larger people. Looking for a king sized mattress to replace a memory foam one we absolutely hate. After reading tons of your replies, we're leaning towards a latex hybrid type mattress as the best of all worlds. We have a platform bed, so we only need a mattress. Wife is 130lbs, I am 160. We rarely sleep together as we work alternating shifts where both of us are on our feet a lot (she's a nurse, I'm a policeman). Trying to keep it soft enough to be comfortable but firm enough to last us for more than just a couple of years, within a budget of $1900, more or less, delivered and old mattress removed. Thanks for taking the time to point me in the right direction. Your blog has been very helpful. I started out looking at the fluffiest pillowtops we could find because they were too soft for the 10 minutes in a mattress store - now I know better. Jim Hi Jim, The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress fits all of your wants & needs. A latex hybrid mattress with firm, contouring support from the individually pocketed coils, and soft latex upholstery. Unlike memory foam, latex provides a comfortable sleeping surface that doesn’t allow you to sink…providing a feel like you’re floating. No off gassing, no sleeping hot, comfort that lasts for many years. This mattress comes with White Glove Delivery. Delivery includes setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packing materials. And, it’s currently on sale, falling nicely into your price range. I am 37, 6'1", 190 lbs and have lower back pain due to DDD. I’m currently sleeping on a 3 year old pillow top mattress. I’ve been having back pain and morning stiffness that has been increasing over the last year, or so. I’m wondering if i need a new mattress. What would the best kind and brand be for me? Thanks, Brad Hi Brad, Not sleeping well and waking with pain is what tells you that you need a new mattress. Unfortunately, most of the mattresses that made today, are designed to need frequent replacing…thanks to the memory foam used by so many manufacturers. Having opted for a pillowtop only help speed premature wear. That you have a bad back is why you only got 2 years of comfortable sleep. However, those without a bad back only get a couple of more years before starting to feel the pain of sleeping misaligned, as memory foam causes you to sink into it, causing that misalignment. Best option for you is the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium, which will maintain your spine’s natural alignment. The pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery provides comfort that won’t allow you to sink, providing the feel of floating. Click on this link to view that mattress and place your order. I have mild scoliosis. My back is at about 17 degrees and has an S curve, with most pain in the low and middle back due to muscle spasms. I'm sleeping on a 20+-year-old mattress with a memory foam topper, but I am getting little to no support. I want to get something for better support, but I have no idea where to start. I am 5'8, 150 lbs, and a side sleeper. thanks in advance! Katherine Hi Kathrine, The key to sleeping without pain is to keep your spine in its natural alignment. Nothing does that better than an individually pocketed coil system, with all of the coils moving independently from one another…providing firm, but contouring support. A mattress like that with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex upholstery, which provides comfort that doesn’t allow you to sink into it, which is what memory foam does. Once you sink into the memory foam upholstery, you’ve eliminated the natural alignment that your condition absolutely requires.
