Hi Pete,
I am having a major flare up of thoracic back pain. When I go to sleep at night, my back is fine. But after 5 hours of sleep I have terrible thoracic and rib pain. So far it looks like this is arthritis but I am having an MRI soon. Our mattress is only a few years old. It’s a Queen Simmons Beautirest pillowtop, to which we have added a 1“ memory foam topper. If I sleep by myself on an older twin in our guest bedroom, I have a less pain. Getting a new mattress might help my problem but I do not want to spend the money and find out it does not help or that I have made an incorrect choice. I am wondering what type of mattress you would suggest. Thank you for your ideas, Barry Hi Barry, An incorrect choice is exactly what you have now. Simmons Beautyrest had once made great mattresses. They and Serta were purchased by an investment group in 2016. They haven’t made a mattress worth buying since. The major difference is the memory foam they’re using…without question, the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented. It’s purposefully designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing. And, having a pillowtop doesn’t help…the first thing to wear. Best Option: A Latex/Pocketed Coil Hybrid Mattress. The coils are like those used by Simmons, but the steel is double tempered, while Simmons never tempered the steel used to make their coils. The big difference: the Pure Organic and Hypoallergenic Latex Upholstery. Latex is the antithesis of memory foam. Latex is proven to be the best, most comfortable and most durable upholstery material for the last 100 years. The pocketed coils maintain the natural alignment of your spine and the latex provides surface comfort that DOESN’T allow you to sink. It’s the sinking into your memory foam that’s throwing off the natural alignment of your body and spine…causing pain. Latex creates the unique feeling of floating…very comfy. I have two choices for you…basically the same…with all of the aforementioned components…providing different services. The Williams Kingston Mattress: This mattress comes with White Glove Delivery, which includes: Setup in your bedroom and removal of your old mattress and all packing materials…shown here: The Williams Kingston Plush Mattress https://cc-mattress-llc.square.site/product/kingston-plush/105?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=TBPEGMF6GAOUPNC4SCBQMGLT The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress: This mattress arrives via UPS, but comes with a 100 Night Trial Period. Both take about 2 weeks to arrive. ******** You never want to put a new mattress on an old foundation. Doing so will void the warranty of any mattress. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry and odor free will enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well.
