A Mattress to Relieve Back and Hip Pain, Herniated Discs

I’m looking for a new mattress. 
I have two herniated discs in my lower back and hip pain. 
I see from other posts you often recommend a firm mattress with a latex topper. Why not a softer mattress to begin with?
