Hello Pete,
I have read through your postings for the last few days and value the knowledge that you are sharing. I am however still confused as to what the best mattress would be to buy. My husband has RA and lots of hip and shoulder pain (also has had back surgery in past). He is in pain every morning. Can you help us to decide on the best mattress? I don't care how much we need to spend to get the right mattress for him. I also noticed that you mentioned getting a mattress and adding a 2” latex topper. Help-I am soooo confused and hope to make a decision very soon. Thank you so much! Michele Hi Michele, In a desparate attempt to sleep comfortably with a disorder that is painful, many will think of it in terms as you have stated..."I don't care how much we need to spend"….words you should never say to a salesperson. And while you will have to spend something, perhaps a little more than those not fighting the pain, going to high end bedding is often a huge mistake. Your husband's problems have a duality to them. It isn't just the RA. There is also a back condition. In addressing multiple issues, you must deal with them from the inside out, if you are to deal with all of them effectively. Softer mattresses, while feel good initially, are often too soft for a back condition. Not only that, once they lose their shape...and they will... you're screwed on both counts. Start with a good, reasonably firm, basic mattress. Add to that a soft 2" latex topper. If the RA is severe, you may also need to add a syntheic down topper to attain a more pillowy feel. Usually the latex topper is enough to reduce the pressure at the hip and shoulder...without sacrificing the underlying support of a good coil unit. These links will take you to the mattress and the topper. You'll find that this combination is a better long term solution...and, it costs less than you were considering spending.
